An Apple Watch that appears to show the wrong time may have an incorrect paired iPhone time or time zone, or its watch face may be deliberately set ahead. First check whether only the face is wrong or whether the iPhone and other time-related functions are also inconsistent, then check the paired iPhone’s automatic time and location-based time-zone settings.
A face offset changes only the time shown on the face: alarms, notifications, World Clock, and other times still match actual time. If Apple presents an updated time-zone notice, restart the iPhone and any paired Apple Watch.
First, identify what is actually wrong
Compare the watch face with the paired iPhone and, if available, another reliable clock. Check whether the date, time-zone label, alarms, or World Clock are also inconsistent.
- Only the watch face is ahead by a fixed number of minutes: check the face-offset setting.
- The iPhone and several time-related functions are wrong: check the iPhone’s date, time, internet connection, and time-zone settings.
- The time looks different but is not actually wrong: check whether the watch is using a 12-hour or 24-hour display.
These are troubleshooting checks, not a device-specific diagnosis. Apple’s Apple Watch clock settings guidance explains the face offset and display format.

1. Check the watch-face offset
- On the Apple Watch, open Settings.
- Tap Clock.
- Tap +0 min, turn the Digital Crown to select the number of minutes ahead, and tap Done.
- To make the face match actual time, select +0 min.
Apple allows the time shown on the watch face to appear ahead of actual time. This setting does not change alarms, notifications, World Clock, or other times. If the face is five minutes fast but those functions are correct, the offset is a useful first check.
2. Check the paired iPhone’s automatic time settings
Apple’s primary automatic-time checks are on the paired iPhone. Confirm it has an internet connection and current software, then follow these steps:
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn on Set Automatically.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services.
- Turn on Setting Time Zone.
Apple says the Setting Time Zone service lets the device use its current location to determine the correct time zone. Menu labels may vary by device language, region, or operating-system version. See Apple’s time and time-zone settings guidance.

If automatic time is unavailable or incorrect
If the date, time, or time zone remains incorrect, Apple documents changing it manually. On the iPhone, turn off Set Automatically, then choose the needed time zone or set the date and time. Treat manual selection as a fallback and recheck it after travel or other time-zone changes.
If Set Automatically is dimmed or unavailable, Apple notes this may be due to a network provider or regional availability, a Screen Time passcode, or a corporate configuration profile. A restriction may need to be addressed before you can change the setting.
3. Restart after an updated time-zone notice
If Apple presents a message saying updated time-zone information is available, restart the iPhone and any paired Apple Watch, as Apple instructs. This restart guidance applies to that notice; it does not establish that every time mismatch is fixed by restarting.

4. Check whether the problem followed a Mac sync
If the time became incorrect after syncing with a Mac, check the Mac’s Date & Time settings. Apple specifically advises checking those settings in this situation.
5. Rule out a display-format difference
A 12-hour versus 24-hour display is a format choice, not evidence that the underlying clock is wrong. To change the watch’s display format, open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, tap Clock, and turn on 24-Hour Time.
Quick decision table
| What you notice | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Only the watch face is ahead by a fixed number of minutes | Watch Settings > Clock > +0 min |

| Apple shows an updated time-zone notice | Restart the iPhone and any paired Apple Watch |
| Set Automatically is dimmed or unavailable | Check provider or regional availability, Screen Time, or a corporate profile restriction |
| The problem began after syncing with a Mac | Check the Mac’s Date & Time settings |
| The time looks different but matches other clocks | Check the 12-hour or 24-hour display setting |
FAQ
Why is my Apple Watch five minutes fast?
The watch face may be deliberately set ahead. On the watch, open Settings > Clock > +0 min and set the offset to zero if you want the face to match actual time. Alarms, notifications, World Clock, and other times still match actual time.

How do I fix the time on my Apple Watch?
First determine whether only the face is wrong. If the iPhone and other time-related functions are also wrong, check the paired iPhone’s internet connection and software, turn on Set Automatically in Settings > General > Date & Time, and turn on Setting Time Zone in Location Services.
Why is my Apple Watch an hour off?
Check whether the paired iPhone has the correct time zone and whether Setting Time Zone is enabled. If only the face differs, inspect its offset. The available evidence does not identify one cause as universal.
Why are alarms correct when the watch face is wrong?
The face may be set ahead independently. Apple says alarms, notifications, World Clock, and other times continue to match actual time.

What should I do if Set Automatically is greyed out?
Apple notes that automatic settings may be unavailable due to a network provider or regional availability, a Screen Time passcode, or a corporate configuration profile. Check for those restrictions before treating the watch as faulty.
What if my Apple Watch time became wrong after syncing with a Mac?
Check the Mac’s Date & Time settings. Apple specifically advises this check when the issue follows a Mac sync.
The bottom line
Start by checking whether only the watch face is ahead or whether the actual time is wrong across devices and functions. Set a face offset to +0 min if needed; otherwise check the paired iPhone’s internet connection, software, automatic time, and time-zone location service. Follow Apple’s restart instruction if an updated time-zone notice appears, and check Mac settings if the problem followed a sync.
