The Timex Intelligent Quartz Tide Temp Compass and the Intelligent Quartz Perpetual Calendar are separate feature variants, not one watch with both complication sets. The Tide Temp Compass is a practical analog reference for tide cycle, temperature and direction, but its tide hand needs setup and correction, its thermometer is affected by body heat, and its compass must be calibrated. The Perpetual Calendar is a distinct model; confirm the exact model number before applying specifications or instructions to either watch.

Are the Tide Temp Compass and Perpetual Calendar the same watch?

No. Timex’s manual covers multiple Intelligent Quartz variants and cautions that a particular watch may not include every function described in the booklet. The Tide Temp Compass and Perpetual Calendar are treated as separate variants in the available documentation and historical coverage. Do not assume a Perpetual Calendar model has tide, temperature or compass functions, or that a Tide Temp Compass has the perpetual-calendar complication.

For the Tide Temp Compass discussed in a September 2026 review, the identified model is the T2N721. That review reports a 45 mm stainless-steel case, leather strap, mineral crystal, 100 m water resistance, date window and INDIGLO night-light. These are secondary-source specifications; verify the reference and regional listing before relying on them for a purchase or water-use decision. The Gadgeteer’s T2N721 review

A historical aBlogtoWatch result also distinguishes a Tide Temp Compass from a separate Perpetual Calendar watch, but it should not be read as evidence of current stock or availability. aBlogtoWatch coverage

What does the Tide Temp Compass do?

Its indicator hand can show tide or temperature, while a separate compass function provides directional guidance. These are useful outdoor references in an analog watch, not substitutes for location-specific forecasts or navigation instruments.

Tide indication

The tide hand tracks a cycle after the wearer sets it to local tide conditions. Timex cautions that the sun and the shape of the shoreline influence tides, so the watch cannot precisely give local high- and low-tide times and may need periodic adjustment. As the manual puts it: “Tides are influenced by sun position and shape of shoreline, so tide clock cannot precisely give times of high and low tides. Periodic adjustment may be necessary.” Treat the hand as a quick cycle reference; check local tide tables or marine forecasts when timing matters. Timex user manuals

Temperature

The thermometer can measure air or water temperature. On the wrist, however, body heat affects the reading. Timex says, “When worn on wrist, thermometer reading is affected by body heat.” For a more representative ambient reading, remove the watch and leave it in the shade for several minutes before checking it.

  • Water-resistant to 100m (330 ft): In general, suitable for snorkeling, as well as swimming, but not diving

If you want to measure water temperature, select temperature mode before submerging the watch. Timex’s manual says not to press the buttons underwater.

Compass

The compass requires calibration before use. Nearby metal objects and electromagnetic sources can disturb the magnetic field, so calibration and reading conditions matter. Hold the watch level when taking a reading, as the recent review advises; it reports that the compass switches off automatically after about 20 seconds. The watch also offers declination compensation. Follow the instructions for your exact model and local declination setting rather than assuming every reading is true north.

How do you set the tide hand?

The indicator hand must be set against current local tide conditions, then checked periodically. The manual’s instructions are in the tide-setting section of the Timex Intelligent Quartz manual. Since the booklet covers multiple variants and a given watch may omit functions, first confirm that the manual matches your watch’s controls and that your watch has the Tide Temp feature.

  • Adjustable blue 16mm silicone strap with green accents fits up to 8-inch wrist circumference; quick-release spring bars

  • Tide tracker counts down to high or low tide; thermometer measures air & water temperature; analog compass

  • Water-resistant to 100m (330 ft): In general, suitable for snorkeling, as well as swimming, but not diving
  1. Find the tide-setting instructions for your exact watch in the Timex manual. Use a current local tide reference to identify the tide state when setting it.
  2. Use the watch’s specified controls to set the indicator hand for that local condition. Do not infer button functions from instructions for another Intelligent Quartz variant.
  3. Check the indicator against local conditions over time and correct it when needed. The watch is not designed to provide precise local high- or low-tide times.

How should you read the thermometer and compass?

For a more representative temperature reading

  • To check ambient air temperature, take the watch off and let it rest in the shade for several minutes before reading it.
  • To check water temperature, switch to temperature mode before submerging the watch.
  • Do not press the watch’s buttons underwater.

For a compass reading

  • Calibrate the compass as instructed for the exact model before relying on it.
  • Hold the watch level while taking a reading.
  • Keep it away from nearby metal objects and electromagnetic sources that may affect the magnetic field.
  • Set declination compensation as appropriate for your location if you need to account for the difference between magnetic and true north.

Is the Tide Temp Compass a good choice?

It makes sense for someone who wants tide-cycle, temperature and compass references built into a traditional analog quartz watch and is willing to set and maintain them. The trade-off is that those functions depend on setup and conditions: the tide indication is not a precise local tide timetable, body heat can skew temperature readings, and magnetic interference can affect compass use.

Compared with a connected watch that uses GPS or automatically updated information, this Timex offers a different, non-connected approach. That is a category distinction, not a controlled performance comparison: the available review does not establish comparative accuracy or battery-life results.

What to check before buying

  • Confirm the exact model number and whether it is a Tide Temp Compass or a Perpetual Calendar. Do not buy based only on the broader Intelligent Quartz family name.
  • For a T2N721, treat the 45 mm case and 100 m water-resistance figures as specifications reported by The Gadgeteer, and verify them against the exact listing and documentation.
  • If you plan to use the watch frequently in water, note that the reported T2N721 review describes a leather strap. Check the lug width and compatibility before choosing a replacement strap.
  • For water activities, rely on current local tide tables and marine forecasts for timing and conditions rather than the watch’s tide hand alone.
