The Tissot Heritage 1948 Chronograph is a 2017 vintage-inspired automatic chronograph, built around a relatively compact 39.5 mm steel case and an ETA 2894-2 movement. Its dress-leaning design, domed acrylic crystal and mechanical chronograph give it character; the reported 30 m water resistance and scratch-prone acrylic are practical compromises. Its launch prices are historical, not a guide to what a pre-owned example costs today.
What the Heritage 1948 is—and is not
Tissot introduced the Heritage 1948 Chronograph in 2017 as a modern reinterpretation drawing on the brand’s vintage chronograph design. Fratello described it as a step toward a vintage Tissot chronograph, not proof that the new watch is an exact replica of a specific 1948 model. The name signals the design inspiration; it should not be taken as evidence of a one-to-one reproduction.
The watch’s appeal comes from combining old-fashioned visual cues with an automatic chronograph movement and contemporary production. The result is a dress-oriented chronograph rather than a tool watch: there is no tachymeter scale, and the polished details and pale dial give it a restrained, formal presence.
Case, dial and crystal
Compact proportions
The stainless-steel case measures 39.5 mm across and 11.9 mm thick, with a reported 20 mm strap width. Fratello describes twisted, polished lugs and flat chronograph pushers. Those dimensions make the watch relatively compact for an automatic chronograph, though fit still depends on wrist shape and preference.

A period-inspired dial
The white-silver dial combines applied dot markers with a Roman numeral XII and concentric chronograph sub-registers. The registers track elapsed seconds, 30 minutes and 12 hours. A date window sits at 4:30. That placement is a matter of taste: Hodinkee reviewer Stephen Pulvirent found the date visually out of place, while Fratello reviewer Michael Stockton felt it did not detract from the watch.
Acrylic, not sapphire
The domed crystal is acrylic, also commonly called plexi, rather than sapphire. Acrylic suits the vintage-inspired profile and can be polished if lightly marked, but it is more susceptible to scratches than sapphire. The caseback has two partial windows through which the movement can be seen, rather than a fully open display back.

Movement and operation
The standard Heritage 1948 Chronograph uses the ETA 2894-2, a self-winding mechanical chronograph. Fratello describes it as a modular movement built on the ETA 2892-A2 base, and reports 37 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, hacking seconds and a quick-set date. Hodinkee reported a 42-hour power reserve; Fratello described it as more than 40 hours.
These are published specifications, not results of a new test. A limited-edition variant was reported by Hodinkee as having a slightly different dial and a COSC-certified version of the movement. That certification detail should not be assumed for every Heritage 1948 Chronograph; check the exact reference and documentation for an individual watch.

- The G10.212 chrono quartz movement provides precision and robustness, complemented by water resistance up to 10 bar (100 meters/330 feet), and visibility in low-light conditions is guaranteed by the Super-LumiNova coating on the needle-shaped hands.
Water resistance and day-to-day suitability
Fratello reports water resistance of 30 m. That is a modest rating for everyday splash exposure, not a reason to choose this model for swimming or diving. The stated rating is also not a guarantee for a particular pre-owned watch: age, gasket condition and service history can affect water resistance. If water exposure matters, have the specific watch assessed by a qualified watchmaker rather than relying on its original specification.

At launch in 2017, Hodinkee reported U.S. prices of $1,400 on leather and $1,450 on a Milanese mesh bracelet. Fratello reported German launch prices of €1,380 on leather and €1,430 on mesh. These figures explain the “affordable mechanical goodness” framing in its original launch context; they are not current resale prices.

Hodinkee also reported a limited edition of 8,888 pieces. A secondary AskMe.Watch catalog listing for reference T66.1.712.33 shows an official retail figure of €1,350, accessed in 2026; that catalog entry is not evidence of current market value or availability. Current transaction prices, stock and the quality of individual listings are not established here.
For a pre-owned example, assess the actual watch rather than relying on its launch price or name. Compare the reference, condition, service records, included box and papers, seller reputation, return policy, and taxes or fees in your location. Those factors can materially change whether a particular example represents good value.

Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you want a mechanical chronograph with vintage-inspired styling, a compact case, and a dressier dial rather than a sporty tachymeter layout.
- Think carefully if scratch resistance, higher water resistance, or a fully visible movement is important to you; the acrylic crystal, 30 m rating and partial display back are deliberate compromises.
- Verify before buying if you are considering a used or limited-edition example. Confirm its reference, condition, service history and movement documentation, and do not assume the COSC-certified variant applies to the standard model.
