Tourist presented three versions at the 1957 Basel Fair and began sales that summer, according to watch journalist Tomas Rosputinsky. The feature credits electrical engineer Alois Zäch with designing the holder that joined the lighting circuit to the mechanical movement, while noting that the patent-priority story remains unresolved.
What was the Tourist Everlight?
The Everlight paired a conventional mechanical movement with a tiny electric bulb above 12 o’clock. When the wearer pressed a case pusher, the bulb lit the dial through a small opening. Rosputinsky’s 2019 account gives the bulb’s size as 1.2 mm. A small lead DEAC dry accumulator sat in the case back and powered the light; it did not drive the watch’s timekeeping.
The design addressed a practical problem: reading a watch in the dark. Local watchmaker and Welschenrohr watch museum volunteer curator Andreas Fluri told Rosputinsky that Tourist pursued electric illumination after radium-based luminous material was banned. That is Fluri’s explanation as reported in the feature, not proof that one event alone prompted the wider development of illuminated watches.
Who developed the lighting system?
Rosputinsky credits Alois Zäch, an electrical engineer at Tourist’s sister company BRUWA, with constructing the movement holder that integrated the lighting circuit. The feature recounts that Tom Waugh’s visit to the museum helped connect the author with Zäch’s contribution. The account also draws on conversations with Everlight owners and watchmakers, Fluri, and René, grandson of Tourist founder Adolf Allemann.

When did the Everlight launch?
Tourist premiered three Everlight models at the 1957 Basel Fair, and sales began in summer 1957, according to Rosputinsky. The feature says the first trio included steel, gold-plated, and 18-carat-gold versions. Chromed and 14-carat-gold examples followed. Tourist had been established by Allemann in 1893 and ceased operations in 1963.

What changed between Everlight versions?
The Everlight appeared in several case, dial, control, movement, and branding configurations. Rosputinsky describes the following distinctions:
| Feature | Reported versions |
|---|---|
| Case material | Initial steel, gold-plated, and 18-carat-gold models; chromed and 14-carat-gold versions followed. |
| Dial | Many examples have straight hour markers, double markers at 3, 6, and 9, and a triple marker at 12; some use Arabic numerals. A date aperture at 12 is also reported. |
| Case size | Most examples are described as 35 mm. |
| Light control | Two pusher styles are described: a small chronograph-like button, sometimes marked with a spark, and a smaller button-like form. |
| Movement | Manual versions and later automatic models are mentioned. |
| Branding | Besides Tourist, the feature names Sparewa, Waltham, and Giroxa. It says these other-brand models probably had bulbs at both 12 and 6, so the second bulb should not be treated as confirmed for every example. |
Did Tourist invent or patent the first electric-light mechanical watch?
The available account does not establish patent priority. Rosputinsky reports that historical records list an Ernst Borel application dated September 28, 1956, while Fluri says Tourist applied on April 30, 1956. Because those dates conflict and the feature does not resolve the discrepancy, it is safer to say Tourist commercially introduced the Everlight at Basel in 1957 than to call it conclusively the first such watch or its undisputed inventor.

How many Everlights were made?
Exact production figures are unknown. Fluri offered an estimate of well over 100,000 watches: “We don’t know the specific numbers, but according to estimates, Tourist produced well over 100,000 pieces,” he told Rosputinsky. This is an attributed estimate, not a documented production total.
The feature also reports battery leakage and warranty returns as significant problems. Many original accumulators are now missing or unusable, according to the same account.

What should owners know before attempting to charge or restore one?
Rosputinsky describes the historical charging arrangement as allowing a 1.5-volt battery to recharge the accumulator without opening the case, by connecting positive to the housing and negative to the winding crown. Tourist also sold an optional Evercharge charger. These are historical descriptions, not safe operating instructions for an individual watch: age, leakage, prior repairs, battery condition, polarity, and modifications can change what is appropriate.
- Do not apply power based only on the historical description.
- Have an experienced watchmaker assess the accumulator, electrical contacts, and movement before charging or opening the case.
- Expect that an original accumulator may be absent, damaged, or no longer usable.
Rosputinsky’s feature, published October 24, 2019, is specialist journalism drawing on interviews and museum materials, rather than a primary patent, company, or museum catalogue record. Its origin story and technical details should be read with that scope in mind. Read the Fratello feature.
