Breguet’s history is both a demanding legacy and a source of design ideas. Its modern Tradition collection makes that tension visible: it reinterprets the founder’s subscription and tact watches, bringing the movement and time display together on the same side. The past matters here not because heritage guarantees innovation, but because it gives today’s designers material to work with.
Why Breguet’s history carries unusual weight
Breguet’s identity is closely tied to Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747–1823), the watchmaker whose name the Maison bears. Swatch Group dates the House’s history to 1775 and credits him with inventions including the tourbillon and gong-spring; it also recounts historical links to European courts. These are the company’s account of its own history, rather than independent assessments of every historical claim. Swatch Group’s Breguet profile also says it acquired the Maison in 1999.
Such a record gives a contemporary watchmaker a recognizable vocabulary, but it also sets expectations. A new Breguet design is read against an accumulated body of history, not just as an isolated object. The question is whether that inheritance is used as a living design resource or treated as a requirement to repeat familiar forms.
The subscription watch began as a response to change
Breguet’s account of its historical subscription watch complicates the idea that tradition is simply about preserving old forms. The Maison describes the watch as a “deliberately simple creation” intended to respond to “a society in transformation and to new uses.” Its purpose, in this telling, was practical adaptation to a changing clientele and moment.
#1 Best Overall
Breguet says nearly 700 subscription watches were sold, most between 1798 and 1805, and that the model attracted new clientele. That figure is the Maison’s reported account; it is not an independently verified sales ledger here. The important design precedent is the combination of an identifiable idea with a response to contemporary needs, rather than the mere repetition of an earlier watch.
How the Tradition collection turns history into a design brief
Breguet explicitly presents its current Tradition collection as a reinterpretation of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s subscription and tact watches. The collection’s defining visual proposition is that the movement and the display of time coexist on the same side of the watch. As the Maison puts it, “the idea of exposed mechanics” is brought to a singular expression by placing both together on that side. The official Tradition collection page shows the line and its current references.
This arrangement makes the mechanical workings part of the viewing experience instead of concealing them behind a conventional dial. It carries forward a historical interest in showing how a watch works, while presenting that idea in a contemporary collection. The line is therefore not simply a museum-like reconstruction: the past supplies a principle, and the current design gives that principle a new form.
Two contemporary ways Breguet has used its past
The Tradition line is the clearest ongoing example in the available official material, but anniversary and tourbillon models show other ways the Maison and its parent group frame heritage in current watches.

The anniversary labels are also company framing: Swatch Group calls 2025 Breguet’s 250th anniversary and its 2026 article marks 225 years since the tourbillon’s invention. Those labels describe the organizations’ anniversary conventions; they should not be mistaken for independent historical verification of the underlying dates.
Heritage is a resource, not a guarantee
Breguet’s own history suggests why tradition can weigh heavily: the name is attached to a founder, inventions, courtly associations and recurring watchmaking forms. That can constrain design when every new model is expected to look backward. Yet the subscription watch’s original purpose, as Breguet describes it, was itself responsive to changed circumstances. The Tradition collection draws on that same history by exposing mechanics and combining them with a contemporary time display.
That does not prove that every heritage-led watch is innovative, or that every reinterpretation succeeds on its own merits. It shows a more limited and useful point: history can give designers a coherent starting point, while the finished watch still has to make that inheritance meaningful in the present.
