For travel, the right watch depends on what you need to see at a glance: destination time, home time, or several time zones. “World time,” “GMT” and “dual time” are not interchangeable specifications. They describe different ways watches can display or set another zone, and the exact functions vary by model.

What do world time, GMT and dual time mean?

These labels point to different display approaches. Check how a particular watch shows and changes time rather than relying on the name alone.

World time

A world-time watch lets you select a city or time zone and read its time; some models also keep home time visible. Casio describes the function as showing local time and the time in another zone. Its AE-1200WH-1AV combines a world map with a dual-time function, but the label does not mean every zone—or even multiple destination zones—appears simultaneously.

GMT

A GMT watch commonly uses a 24-hour hand as a second-zone reference. Rolex says the GMT-Master II shows local time in 12-hour format and a second zone in 24-hour format, using its 24-hour hand and rotating bezel. Citizen’s 9054 movement instructions describe setting first and second regions; on supported watches, the bezel can also be rotated to read a third region. The precise procedure depends on the movement and watch.

#1 Best Overall
Timex Men's Waterbury Traditional GMT 39mm Watch - Stainless Steel Bracelet Black Dial Stainless Steel Case
  • Quartz GMT Movement - When used in conjunction with the black and blue rotating bezel, the two-blue and white triangle GMT hand can be used to track a second time zone.
  • Stainless-steel - The stainless-steel case and bracelet are resistant to corrosion, rust, and daily wear and tear.
  • Date Window - Easily track the date in a dedicated window beside 3 o'clock.
  • Enhanced Visibility - Luminant hands ensure readability in low-light conditions.

Dual time

“Dual time” means a second time indication, but not one specific mechanism. It might be a digital display, a subdial, or another hand. For example, Casio describes specified Oceanus models with a main dial and subdials that display two cities at once.

How to choose a travel watch

Start with the information you need visible at the same time, then consider how you will set the destination and whether the watch handles time changes the way you expect.

  • Zones visible together: Do you need home and destination time simultaneously, or is selecting one destination at a time sufficient?
  • Display style: Choose among a digital readout, a 24-hour hand, or a subdial based on what you can read quickly.
  • Setting method: Some watches let you select a city or zone; others require separate home and local-time settings or adjustment of a bezel. Check the specific model’s instructions.
  • Synchronization: Some models use GPS or radio reception to set time. This is not a universal feature, and behavior depends on the model.
  • Daylight-saving time: Confirm whether the watch adjusts automatically or requires a manual change. Do not assume GPS or radio reception resolves this for every watch.

Examples of travel-watch approaches

Watch or movement What the manufacturer documents Useful distinction
Casio AE-1200WH-1AV World map and dual-time function; Casio lists a 10-year battery life and water resistance to 10 bar. Casio product page. A digital example with a map display. Battery and water-resistance figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Casio GW-M5610U-1B Casio lists Tough Solar, Multi-Band 6 and world time. Casio product page. An example combining solar power and radio control; check specifications for the exact regional reference.
Casio GMW-B5000D-1C Casio lists it as a G-SHOCK world-time model. Casio product page. A metal-case digital example; the cited specification does not establish comparative performance.
Casio Oceanus models Casio describes simultaneous two-city display and selection from 29 cities for specified models. Radio correction and automatic summer-time settings apply to a specified subset, not necessarily every Oceanus model. Casio world-time technology page. Confirm the individual model’s display, city selection and synchronization features.
Citizen F158 movement Citizen documents 38 UTC-offset zones and satellite-based or manual zone selection. The satellite signal does not contain summer-time information, so Citizen instructs users to adjust that setting manually before and after the daylight-saving period. Citizen F158 support page. A movement-specific GPS example; its zone count and daylight-saving procedure should not be generalized to every Citizen watch.
Citizen H82 movement Citizen documents 26 UTC-offset zones and separate home- and local-time settings. Citizen H82 support page. A movement-specific option for setting home and local time independently.
Rolex GMT-Master II Rolex describes local time in 12-hour format and a second zone in 24-hour format, using a 24-hour hand and rotating bezel. Rolex product page. An analog GMT implementation; it is one design, not a requirement for all travel watches.

Citizen’s Satellite Wave GPS technology page describes coverage of 40 global time zones and says a watch can find a time zone and adjust automatically in three seconds. These are Citizen’s stated specifications for that technology, not independent measurements or a guarantee for every model. Citizen Satellite Wave GPS technology page.

Why zone counts and automation need context

A published number of zones describes a manufacturer’s particular watch or movement, not a category-wide standard. For example, Citizen documents 38 UTC-offset zones for F158 and 26 for H82; Casio says specified Oceanus models offer selection from 29 cities. These figures describe different implementations and should not be treated as directly interchangeable measures of capability.

  • ROTATING GMT BEZEL FOR TRAVEL AND EXPLORATION - Dual-time functionality with diver styling.

Likewise, a watch that receives GPS or radio signals may still need a manual daylight-saving adjustment. Citizen says the F158 satellite signal does not carry summer-time information, while Casio describes automatic summer-time programming only for a specified subset of Oceanus models. Verify the exact reference and its instructions, especially when traveling across seasonal time changes.
