Yes—a strap can change a watch’s comfort and appearance enough to transform the experience of wearing it. But a replacement is not automatically an upgrade: the right choice depends on fit, material, the watch’s design and your own taste. That is the case made by Thor Svaboe in his personal Fratello Watches essay, “True Confessions Of A Strapaholic,” published December 15, 2022.
How much can a strap change a watch?
A strap is part of the watch’s overall look, but it also affects how the watch sits and feels on the wrist. A different material, profile or color can make a familiar watch feel more casual, dressy or distinctive. The result depends on the particular pairing; there is no universally best strap or guaranteed improvement.
Svaboe’s essay is an enthusiast’s account, not a controlled comparison. His examples—including a York & Front Burrard, a Zenith Retrotimer with 21 mm lugs, a Doxa SUB 300 on its beads-of-rice bracelet, a Kurono Calendrier and a Holthinrichs Ornament—illustrate personal choices, not independent product assessments.
How to choose a watch strap
1. Match the lug width and attachment
Measure or confirm the lug width before buying: the strap must fit the space between the watch’s lugs. For example, Svaboe notes that his Zenith Retrotimer has 21 mm lugs. Do not assume a strap that looks close in width will fit correctly. Also check the attachment arrangement and whether the watch uses standard or quick-release spring bars.

2. Get the length right
Check strap length against your wrist and the watch. A strap that seems too short on one watch may sit differently on another, so consider the watch’s size and position on your wrist as well as the strap’s stated length. If a listing gives separate lengths or wrist-size guidance, compare those details with how you wear the watch.
3. Balance thickness and flexibility
Think about the strap’s thickness relative to the case and the look you want. Svaboe contrasts a slender watch paired with a thick, padded strap against a larger watch on a slim strap: either mismatch may look or feel wrong to him. Flexibility also matters to comfort and how the strap conforms to your wrist. These are matters of proportion and preference, not a universal rule that every large watch needs a thick strap.

4. Choose material for the look and use
Leather, suede, rubber and NATO-style nylon each give a watch a different character and practical experience. Consider where and how you plan to wear the watch, including whether the strap is suitable for the conditions it will encounter. The essay discusses these materials but does not establish performance ratings or a universal ranking, so check the maker’s care and water-use guidance for the specific strap.
5. Judge the whole pairing
Consider the case, dial and strap together. Color, texture and formality can make a combination feel coherent—or distract from the watch. Svaboe’s examples show how personal this judgment can be: a change that delights one wearer may not suit another’s taste or intended look.

6. Consider how easy it is to change
If you expect to rotate straps often, ease of removal may affect how much you enjoy doing so. Svaboe says he dislikes the process of removing NATO straps. That is his preference, but it is a useful reminder to consider the changing process as well as the finished appearance. Quick-release spring bars can be a related accessory to consider where compatible.
Is a replacement strap always an upgrade?
No. A watch’s original strap may be the best match for its design, fit or your preferences. Replacing it can expand your options, but buying another strap does not inherently improve the watch.

Svaboe names strap makers and sources including Morellato, Genteel Handmade and Fratello Signature straps, alongside other specialist makers. He also recalls a €12 strap and a €200 bespoke crocodile strap in the 2022 essay. Those are personal examples from that article, not current prices or a general market range.

- Assess the color and texture alongside the case and dial.
- If you plan to switch straps, consider how the strap is removed and whether compatible quick-release spring bars would help.
- Keep the original strap if it remains the pairing you prefer.
When comparing watch straps, use those criteria rather than relying on price or a universal ranking. Svaboe’s point is that an inexpensive option can be satisfying, while a more elaborate one is not automatically the better choice for a particular watch.
