Choose the TUDOR Black Bay 58 if you want a compact, vintage-inspired diver with a straightforward time display. Choose the LONGINES Spirit Pilot Flyback if you specifically want a manual-winding pilot chronograph with flyback timing. Their listed case diameters are close—39 mm for the BB58 and 39.50 mm for the Longines—but they serve different purposes, so the deciding questions are function, winding preference, configuration and fit.
What is the practical difference?
The Black Bay 58 is a diver-style watch rooted in the look of TUDOR dive watches from the 1950s. The Spirit Pilot Flyback is a pilot-style chronograph: it adds elapsed-time measurement and a flyback function for restarting timing in successive stages. That extra functionality comes with manual winding, while the BB58 is the simpler choice if you do not need a chronograph.

In short, this is not a like-for-like contest over which watch is better. It is a choice between a diver format and a more complicated pilot watch.
How do their specifications compare?
The BB58 name covers multiple watches and configurations. The table uses the current TUDOR collection information for the shared 39 mm case size, and identifies movement details only where the 2026 press document specifies them. Longines figures and prices below apply to the named blue-dial US references, not every Spirit Pilot Flyback configuration.

Specifications are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Do not treat the 2026 TUDOR press-document movement and reserve as universal specifications for every watch called a BB58.
Which one suits the way you will use it?
Choose the BB58 for a diver-style watch and simpler operation
- You prefer the Black Bay’s vintage-inspired diver design and do not need chronograph timing.
- You want the smaller listed diameter: 39 mm rather than the Longines’s 39.50 mm.
- You prefer not to make manual winding part of your routine. Verify the movement of the specific BB58 reference, rather than assuming every version shares the same calibre.
- You want to explore the collection’s different dial, bracelet and strap options before settling on a configuration.
TUDOR’s current collection page highlights Master Chronometer certification and T-fit rapid adjustment across bracelet and strap choices. Check the exact model listing to confirm that the adjustment feature and configuration you want apply to that watch.

- Tudor Black Bay Fifty Eight Automatic Chronometer Blue Dial Men's Watch M79030b-0001
Choose the Spirit Pilot Flyback for the chronograph function
- You will use a chronograph and value flyback timing for successive stages.
- You want a pilot-style watch and are comfortable winding it manually.
- You want a 39.50 mm case and one of the listed blue-dial configurations: rubber strap or steel bracelet.
- You value the complication itself enough to accept extra controls and a more involved way of using the watch than a simple time display.
LONGINES says the flyback complication makes it possible to time successive flight stages. The brand also traces its first flyback-equipped model to the early 1930s and gives June 16, 1936 as the patent date. That history explains the function’s aviation connection; it does not mean a modern buyer needs the complication for everyday timekeeping.

How should you compare price and configuration?
The LONGINES US pages accessed in 2026 displayed $5,250 for blue-dial reference L3.721.4.93.9 on rubber and $5,550 for blue-dial reference L3.721.4.93.6 on a steel bracelet. Those are configuration-specific listed prices, and availability or price may change. They do not establish whether the Longines costs more or less than the BB58 you are considering: the exact Tudor reference, strap or bracelet, market and current price are needed for that comparison.

- Main Material: Stainless Steel
- Case Size: 39mm Steel Case with Polished and Satin Finish
- Series: Black Bay 58
- Dial Hue: Burgundy
- Movement Type: Manufacture Calibre MT5400-U; Self-winding Mechanical Movement with Bidirectional Rotor System
Compare the actual versions you would buy. A bracelet and a strap affect both the configuration and the stated price, and the Longines steel-bracelet listing specifies micro-adjustment. TUDOR highlights T-fit adjustment on its collection page, but confirm its availability on the particular BB58 option you are evaluating.
What to verify before choosing
- Identify the exact BB58 reference. Use TUDOR’s collection page to distinguish among the available versions, then confirm the reference’s movement, water resistance, bracelet or strap, clasp and current local price.
- Choose the Longines configuration. Reference L3.721.4.93.9 is the blue-dial rubber-strap version; L3.721.4.93.6 is the blue-dial steel-bracelet version. Check the live US product page for current price and availability if buying in the United States.
- Try both on if fit is uncertain. The case diameters are close, but diameter alone cannot determine how a watch will wear on your wrist. These specifications do not establish individual comfort or fit.
- Decide whether you will use the flyback chronograph. If you want only a time display, the complication may add complexity without serving your needs. If you want successive timing, it is the Longines’s defining functional difference.
- Check local terms before purchase. The cited Longines prices are US listings accessed in 2026; they are not a price guide for other markets or a promise of today’s price.
What the available specifications do—and do not—tell you
Neither brand’s product specifications establish which watch will be more comfortable on a particular wrist, more accurate in an individual example, easier to resell or less expensive to service over time. Those questions cannot be settled by case diameter, certification or power reserve alone. For fit, try the exact configurations on; for ownership costs and local pricing, ask an authorized seller or service provider in your market.
