For the black-dial steel-bracelet versions, choose the Black Bay 54 for a more compact 37mm case and a lower listed US price; choose the Black Bay 58 if you prefer a 39mm watch, its five-link bracelet, or its added stated METAS certification. Both are rated to 200m, and neither is an automatic fit or accuracy winner for every buyer.
Which Black Bay should you buy?
The Black Bay 54 is the better fit if you want the smaller case, a bezel with a cleaner layout, a three-link bracelet and the lower price. The Black Bay 58 suits buyers who prefer a larger presence, the selected model’s five-link bracelet, or the current 58’s COSC and METAS certification. These recommendations concern the black-dial steel-bracelet references M79000N-0001 and M7939A1A0NU-0001—not the blue 54, GMT, burgundy 58 or other variants.

At TUDOR’s US suggested retail prices checked October 12, 2026, the 58 is $5,350 and the 54 is $4,725, a $625 difference. TUDOR says suggested prices and models may change, and regional prices can differ. See the Black Bay 58 product page and Black Bay 54 product page for current listings.
How do their size and fit differ?
| Specification | Black Bay 58 | Black Bay 54 |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 39mm | 37mm |
| Case thickness | 11.7mm | 11.2mm |
| Lug width | 20mm | 20mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 47.8mm, stated in the 2026 press sheet | Not stated on the cited product page |
The 54 is smaller and 0.5mm thinner on paper, but those measurements cannot predict how either watch will sit on a particular wrist. Case shape, bracelet articulation and personal taste matter too. If you are unsure whether the 54 will feel too small, try both on rather than relying on diameter alone. The 47.8mm lug-to-lug figure comes from TUDOR’s 2026 Black Bay 58 press specification sheet.

What differs in the movement and certification?
| Specification | Black Bay 58 | Black Bay 54 |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | MT5400-U | MT5400 |
| Stated certification | COSC and METAS | COSC |
| Stated power reserve | 65 hours | Approximately 70 hours |
The 58 has the additional stated METAS certification; the 54 has approximately five hours more stated power reserve. Certification and reserve figures do not establish which watch will keep better time in an individual owner’s daily use. TUDOR describes METAS Master Chronometer certification as covering “precision, resistance to magnetic fields, waterproofness and power reserve”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent head-to-head result.
Are the bezel, bracelet and water resistance different?
- Bezel: Both have a unidirectional rotating bezel. The 54 has a 60-minute bezel with an aluminium insert described by TUDOR as devoid of minute graduations. The 58’s selected reference has a stainless-steel bezel with an anodised aluminium insert. The layout difference is a design preference, not evidence that one is functionally superior.
- Bracelet: The selected 58 reference has a five-link steel bracelet; the 54 has a three-link steel bracelet. Both list a T-fit clasp.
- Water resistance: Both are specified to 200m (660ft). These are manufacturer ratings, not the result of comparative underwater testing.
What about the guarantee?
TUDOR lists the same five-year transferable guarantee for both models, with no registration or periodic maintenance checks required. The stated guarantee terms do not distinguish one from the other.

How to make the final choice
- Decide how much wrist presence you want. Compare the 37mm 54 and 39mm 58 on your wrist; dimensions alone cannot settle comfort or appearance.
- Choose the look you prefer. Consider the 54’s less graduated bezel and three-link bracelet against the 58’s bezel layout and five-link bracelet.
- Weigh the specific movement differences. The 58 adds stated METAS certification; the 54 offers an approximately 70-hour reserve versus the 58’s 65 hours.
- Check the local price for the exact reference. The US figures above are suggested retail prices checked October 12, 2026, and can change by market or over time.
There is no basis here to declare a winner for real-world accuracy, long-term reliability, resale value or fit by wrist circumference: no comparative measurements, owner survey or wear test is established.
