The TUDOR Black Bay Pro pairs a compact 39 mm case with a useful traveler-style GMT, but its 14.6 mm thickness is the detail that may matter most on the wrist. In Henry Zwartz’s 2022 first impressions, he liked the familiar Black Bay character while reserving judgment on comfort until wearing it longer. Here’s how the GMT works, what the dimensions mean, and what current versions offer.
What were the first impressions of the Black Bay Pro?
Henry Zwartz’s 2 April 2022 Time+Tide article is an early reaction, not a long-term review. He noted the Pro’s 39 mm diameter but questioned its thickness compared with the stainless-steel Black Bay 58: “The case has some similar aspects to it alongside the popular 58 models, being 39mm in diameter, but at 14.6mm thick it is noticeably more rotund than the 58’s svelte 11.9mm (the stainless-steel versions).” Those figures are his dated comparison; they are not an independent current measurement or a verdict about how the Pro will fit every wrist.

The concern is easy to understand from the current official specification: the M79470-0005 is 14.6 mm thick. Diameter alone does not capture how a watch sits, and wrist shape and personal tolerance vary. If thickness is a deciding factor for you, try the watch on before buying rather than assuming that 39 mm will wear like a slimmer Black Bay 58.
How does the Black Bay Pro GMT work?
The Pro uses a traveler-style GMT arrangement: the shorter local-hour hand can jump independently in one-hour increments, forwards or backwards, while the yellow 24-hour Snowflake hand tracks reference time against the fixed, graduated 24-hour bezel. The date is linked to local time and changes when the local-hour hand is adjusted. That setup is especially practical when changing time zones: move local time without losing track of the reference time.

The fixed steel bezel is not just a styling detail. Its 24-hour scale works with the yellow hand to show reference time, while also giving the watch a more overt tool-watch look than a rotating bezel would.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is the Black Bay Pro for?
- Frequent travelers: The independently jumping local-hour hand and date adjustment are the central practical advantages of its GMT layout.
- Fans of tool-watch styling: The fixed steel 24-hour bezel, Snowflake hands, and steel case give it a purposeful look.
- Buyers comparing compact watches: The 39 mm diameter is paired with 14.6 mm thickness, so try it on if a tall case is a concern.
- Shoppers choosing a configuration: Compare dial and bracelet or strap options by exact reference, and check local pricing rather than relying on an older launch price.
Zwartz’s initial reaction is useful for understanding the appeal and the thickness question, but it does not establish long-term comfort, reliability, or personal performance. For current product details, consult TUDOR’s M79470-0005 page.
