Tudor Submariner 7923 Sold for $99,999 on eBay—not More Than $100,000

The famous Tudor Submariner 7923 eBay sale was reported at $99,999 in 2017. Its later $350,000 dealer listing was only an asking price, and separate 2025 auction results do not establish a value for an unknown example.

The Tudor Oyster Submariner reference 7923 featured in the widely reported eBay story sold for $99,999 in 2017, not more than $100,000. The watch was described as exceptionally well preserved—not beaten-up—and its later $350,000 dealer listing was an asking price, not a confirmed sale.

What happened in the eBay sale?

Hodinkee reported that the particular Tudor 7923 sold on eBay for $99,999 in March 2017. According to its account, an eBay bidding safeguard required bidders to telephone the company’s fraud-protection unit to bid into six figures, preventing a higher bid through that process. The report does not support saying that the watch sold for more than $100,000. Hodinkee’s account of the sale.

Afterward, dealer HQ Milton offered the same watch at an asking price of $350,000. That figure was a listing price; the report does not say the watch sold for that amount. The article also described the eBay example as apparently untouched and exceptionally well preserved, so calling that specific watch “beaten-up” misstates the reported condition.

Why the 7923 is distinctive

Tudor’s official history identifies reference 7923 as the only Tudor Submariner equipped with a manually wound movement. Its ETA calibre 1182 beat at 18,000 beats per hour. Tudor also records a black lacquered dial, baton hands, a screw-down case back and crown, and a domed crystal. The model was rated to 100 metres when new, according to Tudor’s 2014 history; that historical specification does not establish the water resistance of any surviving watch today. The 7923 belongs to a family of early Submariner references with distinct specifications. Tudor’s history gives this comparison:

Reference Distinguishing detail in Tudor’s history
7922 Water resistance to 100 metres
7923 Manually wound movement
7924 Water resistance to 200 metres
7925 Shared the 7924’s characteristics, with a 100-metre rating

Phillips describes the 7923 as a mid-1950s watch, with a flat case and a small Brevet-plus crown associated with its manual movement. Its catalogue notes that 7923 dials are found both with and without red depth text, so the red “100/330” marking is not the only reported configuration. Phillips’ 7923 catalogue entry.

What other 7923s sold for—and why the prices are not a valuation

Two separate 2025 auction results show that individual examples can sell for substantially different amounts. They are not comparable enough to establish a general price range, particularly for an unspecified or damaged watch.

Example and sale Reported result Condition details in the listing
Separate circa-1955 example, Heritage Auctions, June 3, 2025 $131,250 sale price Heritage described strong unpolished lug bevels, an original crown and bezel, slight consistent lume loss, a case-back scratch, and a movement that ran and set as it should. It recommended service for daily use. Heritage lot listing.
Another example, Antiquorum, Geneva, May 10, 2025 CHF 11,250 sale price; estimate CHF 5,000–8,000 The listing described a slightly scratched case, a very good but slightly oxidized service dial, service hands, and a movement for which overhaul was recommended at the buyer’s expense. Antiquorum lot listing.

These are individual outcomes from different sales, years, currencies, and condition descriptions—not a market-wide statistic or a formula for pricing another watch. The cited evidence does not establish a reliable current value for a 7923 whose condition and originality are unknown.

What to check when assessing a specific watch

A useful comparison starts with the individual components and records, rather than the reference number or one headline price. Auction descriptions are the houses’ condition opinions, not independent authentication; Heritage says its condition statements are guidance rather than warranties and recommends in-person inspection.

  • Dial and lume: Establish whether the dial appears original or is a service dial, whether red depth text is present, and what oxidation or lume loss is described. Phillips reports an original gilt dial with oxidized lume on its example; Antiquorum identifies a service dial on another.
  • Hands, crown, and bezel: Check whether each is described as original, service, or replacement. Heritage described original pencil hands, crown, and bezel on its 2025 example, while Antiquorum listed service hands on its separate lot.
  • Case: Look for scratches, polishing, and remaining lug bevels. Phillips noted light past polishing while saying bevels remained; Heritage described strong, unpolished bevels on a different watch.
  • Movement and service: Ask whether the movement runs and sets, and whether a qualified watchmaker recommends an overhaul. Heritage said its movement ran and set but recommended service for daily use; Antiquorum recommended an overhaul at the buyer’s expense for its lot.
  • Bracelet and accessories: Identify what is actually included and whether components are original. Gardiner Houlgate’s 2019 catalogue described a non-original expanding bracelet on another 7923. Gardiner Houlgate catalogue entry.
  • Provenance: Separate documented records from a seller’s account. Gardiner Houlgate reported that its own lot had passed through a family; that account does not establish the history of the 2017 eBay watch or any other example.

A loupe can help reveal small visible details, but it cannot authenticate a watch, diagnose its movement, or produce a valuation. For a buying or selling decision, have the actual watch and relevant records assessed by a qualified vintage-watch specialist.

How to approach selling a 7923

  1. Assemble the evidence: Gather service records, purchase paperwork, documented ownership history, and a precise inventory of the watch and included accessories. Label unverified provenance as an account, not a proven fact.
  2. Get a watch-specific assessment: Ask a qualified specialist to assess originality, condition, movement needs, and appropriate sale options. A visual inspection alone is not an authentication or appraisal.
  3. Compare sale routes and terms: Request estimates from specialist vintage-watch auction or consignment services, and consider a specialist dealer appraisal. Ask how the estimate is formed and what fees or other costs would affect net proceeds; the cited sale reports do not establish current fees or what a particular seller would receive.
  4. Describe the watch precisely: State what is known about the dial, hands, crown, bezel, case, movement, bracelet, and provenance. Distinguish asking prices from completed sales and avoid using one exceptional result as a promised outcome.
