Tungsten is much denser, so a case of similar size can feel substantially heavier. But hardness is not a guarantee against every kind of impact, and “tungsten” on a listing may describe only one component—or a carbide composite rather than pure metal.
How much heavier is a tungsten watch case?
Weight depends on both material density and the volume of material used. Audemars Piguet’s material table lists tungsten at 18–20 g/cm³ and 316L stainless steel at 7.9 g/cm³. For the same volume of material, tungsten is therefore more than twice as dense at the lower end of that range.

That comparison does not tell you the weight of a complete watch. Case dimensions, bracelet, movement, crystal and other components all contribute. A smaller or differently constructed watch can weigh less than a larger steel watch, even if its case material is denser. Compare the listed total watch weights and dimensions, not density alone.

What does “tungsten” mean on a watch listing?
Check which part is made from the advertised material: the case, bezel, bracelet or another component. The terms “tungsten,” “tungsten carbide” and “hardmetal” are not interchangeable descriptions of a pure-metal case. Rado describes hardmetal as tungsten-carbide ceramic combined with a metal binder and discusses it in the context of watch components. That does not establish that every watch advertised as tungsten has a full carbide case.

Look for an explicit material description for the case itself. If a listing names tungsten without clarifying the component or construction, ask the seller or manufacturer before treating it as a tungsten-carbide case.
Which material resists scratches better?
Tungsten-carbide hardmetal’s high hardness gives it a strong advantage against surface scratches. Audemars Piguet’s table lists tungsten hardness above 2,000 HV, compared with 200–350 HV for 316L stainless steel. These are material-table values, not a guarantee that a finished watch will remain mark-free in every use.

Steel can scratch, but its appearance may be restorable: Mühle-Glashütte says its 316L cases can be polished during service. Whether a particular mark can be removed, and how much material refinishing would take away, depends on the case design and the service provider.
Does greater hardness make tungsten more durable overall?
No single hardness figure captures every kind of damage. Hardness helps explain resistance to scratching, but it does not by itself establish how a case will behave when struck or whether it is more likely to break. The sources cited here do not provide a controlled head-to-head impact test or a case failure rate for tungsten-carbide hardmetal versus steel.

Tudor describes its 316L steel cases as impact resistant, while Audemars Piguet notes that harder materials can be more difficult to manufacture. Treat those as manufacturer descriptions, not results from a direct comparison of finished watches. For either material, the case shape, construction and maker’s specifications matter alongside the material name.
Which case is more comfortable to wear?
Comfort is personal. A heavier watch may feel reassuringly substantial to one wearer and tiring to another; density alone cannot predict which you will prefer. The material sources do not establish a controlled comfort comparison between tungsten-carbide and steel watches.

If possible, try on the specific watch. If you cannot, compare its stated total weight, case dimensions and bracelet configuration with a watch you already find comfortable. A case-only weight is not a substitute for the weight of the watch as worn.
How do finishing and servicing differ?
Steel
Steel can be made with varied finishes, and Mühle-Glashütte describes its 316L cases as corrosion resistant and skin friendly. The company also says steel cases can be polished during service. Refinishing options depend on the specific watch and the manufacturer’s service guidance.

Tungsten-carbide hardmetal
Hardmetal’s hardness makes it challenging to machine. Rado describes using diamond wheels to machine and polish hardmetal components. That manufacturing detail does not guarantee a particular repair or refinishing option for a given watch; check with its maker or an authorized service provider before buying if future refinishing is important to you.
Which one should you choose?
