Both trace their origins to 1953; their histories, sizes and specifications give buyers useful starting points, not a reason to skip checking the exact reference against their needs.
Why these two dive watches are iconic
The Submariner and Fifty Fathoms emerged in the same year, but their histories should be described through the brands’ own accounts rather than treated as a settled contest over which watch came first.
Rolex Submariner: a long-running design lineage
Rolex says the Submariner launched in 1953 as its first divers’ wristwatch, initially water-resistant to 100 metres (330 feet). The brand’s timeline says that rating was guaranteed to 200 metres the following year, the Submariner Date appeared in 1969, and the Submariner reached 300 metres in 1979. Rolex calls it “The benchmark among divers’ watches”—the maker’s characterization, not an independent ranking. Blancpain Fifty Fathoms: a parallel 1953 history
Blancpain dates the Fifty Fathoms’ presentation to 1953 and describes it as the first modern diver’s watch. That “first” claim belongs to Blancpain; conclusions can differ depending on how “modern dive watch” is defined. The shared date makes the Fifty Fathoms a significant counterpart to the Submariner, but does not by itself settle priority. These are collection-level or brand-history statements, not a substitute for checking the specification sheet for the particular reference you are considering.

Water-resistance ratings are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that a watch is safe for every dive or condition. A depth rating alone does not confirm suitability for a particular activity; check the watch’s documentation and follow appropriate diving procedures.

Which one should you consider?
Start with the activity, not the name
If you plan to dive, compare the exact reference’s published specifications with the requirements of your intended use and the manufacturer’s instructions. If you mainly want the look and history of a dive watch, water resistance may matter less than fit, legibility and whether you prefer a date display. Neither brand’s collection-level claims establish that every reference suits every underwater activity.
Check fit and configuration on the exact reference
Blancpain states that the Fifty Fathoms collection includes 42 mm and 38 mm sizes, so compare the particular option on your wrist rather than assuming the family has one standard fit. For a Submariner, check the dimensions listed for the exact reference instead of applying an unstated size to the whole family. Then decide whether you want a date display, how the dial reads in the conditions you expect, and which design you actually prefer.

The two families are useful reference points for understanding the development of dive-watch design: each brand traces its watch to 1953, and Rolex documents later Submariner milestones. The sources do not establish an independent winner, a current value comparison, or which model is better for a particular buyer. Treat the history as context; choose from the specifications and fit of the actual watch you can buy.
