After a year without a square G-Shock, Time+Tide senior contributor Borna Bošnjak says he understood its value as soon as his Casio GW-M5610 arrived: it was the watch he could reach for to time a workout, check the calendar or keep track of another time zone. His account is about everyday usefulness and attachment, not a controlled durability test or a verdict that everyone needs the same watch.
What he missed during a year without a G-Shock
Bošnjak’s preferred G-Shocks were square models. He had owned DW-5600 watches, but one was lost and another left his collection with a family member. During the year without one, he tried to make another watch cover more situations and wore a lightweight titanium-cased watch. What he missed most was having a convenient timing function for gym sessions.
His description of the first day with the replacement captures the personal nature of the realization: “You really never know how much you love something until it’s gone, and the first day my new GW-M5610 arrived made that painfully obvious,” Bošnjak wrote in his Time+Tide review published February 2, 2026. The appeal was not a newly discovered feature so much as having useful functions ready on a watch he was comfortable wearing.
Why he chose the GW-M5610
Bošnjak’s stated reason for moving from the DW-5600 to the GW-M5610 was that he did not want to face a battery replacement on the former. The GW-M5610’s solar charging suited that preference. Casio’s US product page identifies the listed GW-M5610-1 as Tough Solar, and its Module 3495 operation guide explains that the rechargeable secondary battery is charged by a solar panel integrated into the watch.

Solar power still depends on light exposure and charging conditions. Casio advises exposing the watch to light when it is stored rather than leaving it in darkness. This is a charging convenience, not evidence that the watch will run indefinitely without light.
What the watch does in daily use
In Bošnjak’s routine, the GW-M5610 provides a regular 24-hour display and calendar, world time for saved travel destinations, and a stopwatch for interval training. Those functions make the watch useful beyond the moments when a wearer wants a rugged-looking square.

Casio’s US product listing provides the specifications. Regional pages can give different estimates, so the figures above should not be generalized to every market variant.

Durability: useful anecdotes, not a test
Bošnjak recounts wearing his square G-Shock in snow and water, around outdoor cooking, and after dropping it from roughly two stories. He says it continued to look much as it had when new. The review also jokes that photographs supposedly taken on a lake floor were actually taken in a fish tank. These are the owner’s anecdotes, not independent testing, and they do not establish what another watch will withstand or what a warranty covers.
The trade-offs he noticed
The watch’s usefulness did not make it ideal for every setting. Bošnjak found its appearance casual and said it sat awkwardly in his canvas travel roll. Those are personal observations, but they point to a real choice in the role he describes: he valued having a practical, readily available timer and a watch he was not worried about wearing, while accepting less dressiness and less convenient packing than he wanted from other watches.

Is the GW-M5610 worth it?
In this account, the GW-M5610 was worth returning to because it restored a set of everyday functions Bošnjak had missed, while solar charging addressed his reluctance to deal with a DW-5600 battery replacement. That is a useful way to judge the watch for yourself: consider whether you want its timing and calendar functions close at hand, whether solar charging fits how you store and wear a watch, and whether its casual style and size suit your routine. One owner’s experience cannot establish a universal ranking among G-Shocks or prove that every wearer needs one.
