A black watch is a look, not a single material or technology. Its case may be steel or titanium with a dark surface treatment, or it may be made from black ceramic. Those options differ in how they are constructed and how wear may show, so compare the finish and the material beneath it rather than assuming that every black case is equally durable.
What makes a watch black?
Black cases are made in more than one way. A manufacturer can apply a coating to a metal case, treat a metal surface through another process, or use ceramic for the case or selected components. The color alone does not tell you which construction a watch uses.
PVD is a process, not one coating material
PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. In his 2014 Time+Tide article, David Chalmers describes it as a process for applying a coating to a base-metal case—not a coating itself. The term does not specify one chemistry, so a black PVD finish should not automatically be called DLC. Time+Tide’s explanation of the blackening process is useful background, but its account dates to 20 August 2014.
PVD-finished cases are not immune to scratches. Chalmers notes that the finish is less prone to cracking or peeling than older powder-coated finishes, while also pointing out that scratches can still occur and that the underlying case matters. This is a dated general explanation, not a comparative test of every modern coating system.

DLC is a coating family, not a case material
Diamond-like carbon, or DLC, is a thin carbon-based coating deposited on another material, commonly steel or titanium. It is not black paint and does not turn the underlying case into a solid carbon component. DLC formulations and deposition methods vary; PVD describes a group of deposition processes, not a single coating chemistry. A coating may resist ordinary abrasion without preventing damage from impacts or other conditions. Hen & Mills’ 2026 DLC explainer makes that distinction, but it is not an independent comparative test.
Plasma coating has its own history
Black-coated watches predate the renewed fashion interest that Time+Tide associates with the mid-2000s. Heuer’s history says the brand first offered black-coated versions of existing chronographs, then introduced the Pasadena in 1979 as a watch designed from the ground up with a black-coated case. TAG Heuer specifies that the Pasadena used plasma coating, not PVD. That history applies to the Pasadena and the examples in the brand’s account; it should not be taken as proof that every black watch from the period used the same process. TAG Heuer’s account of its 1970s designs provides the brand’s historical framing.
Time+Tide also points to the 2007 Tempus “Temple of Time” exhibition in Singapore as a showcase for limited-edition black watches during that renewed fashion moment. It describes a return to fashion, not the invention of black watches.

Ceramic is a case or component material
Ceramic is a useful contrast to a thin coating over metal: it can form the case or individual components, rather than just a dark surface layer on a metal substrate. For example, TUDOR describes the Black Bay Ceramic as having a matte black monobloc ceramic case, a black ceramic bezel insert and a matching ceramic bracelet. These are product-construction details, not a guarantee that ceramic cannot be damaged. TUDOR’s Black Bay Ceramic specifications describe that model.

For the question “Which black watches are most resistant to scratches?”, the available evidence does not establish a universal winner. A coating’s chemistry and application, the substrate beneath it, and the kind of wear or impact all matter. Ceramic is a different construction, but the cited product information does not provide a comparable scratch test. Use the following distinctions to narrow your options without treating a marketing term as a performance score.
| What to compare | Coated metal | Ceramic |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | A surface coating applied to a metal case, such as steel or titanium. PVD names a deposition process; it does not identify one coating chemistry. | The case or selected components are ceramic rather than a thin black film over metal. TUDOR’s cited example uses a monobloc ceramic case, bezel insert and bracelet. |
| Visible wear | A scratch may affect the coating and reveal the contrasting metal beneath it. The 2014 Time+Tide explanation says PVD finishes can still scratch; the 2026 Hen & Mills explainer says coatings cannot make a case damage-proof. | The cited TUDOR description establishes the material, not a comparative scratch or impact result. Do not infer that ceramic is unbreakable. |
| Evidence to look for | Check the maker’s description for the coating name and the case material beneath it. “PVD” alone does not tell you the chemistry. | Check which parts are ceramic: a bezel insert is not the same as a ceramic case or bracelet. |
No independent, comparable scratch-performance figures are established in the cited sources. A claim that one named finish is universally scratch-proof would go beyond that evidence.

Which black watch suits your use?
Once you understand the construction, choose for fit and purpose. Casio’s US buying guide recommends considering case size, weight, band length, occasion, everyday wear and outdoor performance. Its examples span G-SHOCK, BABY-G, PRO TREK, OCEANUS, EDIFICE and Casio lines; those are brand-provided recommendations, not independent rankings. Casio’s US guide to black watches includes the black DW5000R-1A, described as a recreation of the original 1983 G-SHOCK.
For everyday wear
Check that the case size and weight feel comfortable for the hours you plan to wear it, and that the band or bracelet fits securely. A black finish does not make a watch automatically suitable for daily knocks; consider the case material and the maker’s stated capabilities.

For formal or work settings
Consider whether the watch’s size, thickness and overall design suit the occasion. Also check legibility: a black case and dial may look cohesive, but hands and markers still need to be easy for you to read in the conditions where you will wear it.

For outdoor or sport use
Look at the specific model’s features and stated outdoor performance rather than relying on color or material alone. Check legibility, fit and the manufacturer’s specifications for the activities you have in mind.
For a historically styled black watch
History can help identify what a watch is—and is not. The Heuer Pasadena is a documented 1979 example of a black-coated design using plasma coating. The mid-2000s fashion revival and the 2007 Tempus exhibition belong to a later chapter, not the beginning of black watches.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Identify the construction. Confirm whether the case is coated steel or titanium, ceramic, or another material. If it is coated, look for the named coating and the substrate beneath it.
- Check the parts list. A ceramic bezel insert does not mean the case or bracelet is ceramic. Read the model’s specifications component by component.
- Try to assess fit. Compare case size and weight, and verify band or bracelet length and adjustability. The right black watch should suit your wrist and intended wear.
- Match features to the occasion. Consider legibility and the model’s stated capabilities for formal, everyday, outdoor or sport use.
- Verify the exact model and listing. Availability and specifications can change. Check the current manufacturer page and a region-appropriate seller before relying on a price or stock status.
