What is the Ulysse Nardin Freak neXt?
Ulysse Nardin unveiled the Freak neXt in London on March 6, 2019, as a concept watch and technical showcase. The brand described it as a unique concept and said it was not available for sale at launch. Its central idea was to suspend the oscillator in three dimensions using a structure of silicon blades rather than support it on a conventional central staff and pivots. The launch announcement republished by Watch I Love set out the design and announced specifications.
The neXt also brought together two ideas associated with the wider Freak development: the Ulysse Anchor escapement and the Grinder automatic winding system. Ulysse Nardin’s brand history characterizes the neXt as an open-ended development. Grinder had appeared earlier in the Freak Vision, a production watch introduced in 2018; the neXt was not presented as a production version of that watch or as a production successor.
How does the flying oscillator work?
In a conventional balance assembly, a staff turns on pivots that support the oscillator at its center. The neXt’s design instead uses elastic silicon blades to suspend the oscillator and define its motion around a virtual pivot. In the launch description, removing those pivots and their jewels eliminates bearing friction at that support. It does not eliminate all friction: air resistance remains.

The announced assembly comprised 32 silicon micro-blades, each 16 micrometers wide, connected into 16 triangles across four parallel layers. A solid layer acted as a flywheel. The layered arrangement is what gives the oscillator its three-dimensional character, rather than simply mounting a conventional balance wheel in an unusual position. Hodinkee’s 2019 report independently describes the annular regulator, 32 blades, four layers, and 12 Hz rate.
The launch announcement attributed this statement to Léopold Defossez: “The balance wheel regulates even better as it has a great moment of inertia and performs rapid oscillations of great amplitude.” The cited passage does not identify Defossez’s role.

The launch announcement described 12 Hz as three times the conventional comparison rate. That is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independent accuracy result. The cited accounts do not establish how the prototype performed in an independent timing test.

How is the Freak neXt different from the Freak X?
Freak neXt and Freak X are separate 2019 models with different roles. The neXt was an experimental concept centered on the suspended oscillator; the Freak X was a distinct model intended to make the Freak approach more suitable for everyday wear. Ulysse Nardin notes that the Freak X reintroduced a conventional crown for setting. The brand’s history describes the Freak X in those terms.
