The undercut is a haircut structure, not one fixed style: it pairs a significantly longer top with much shorter sides and back. Choose the shape you want on top—such as a slick-back, pompadour, side sweep, or natural texture—then tell your barber whether you want the sides blended into a fade or kept sharply disconnected. The 20 combinations below are a practical menu, not an official ranking or a list of standardized haircut names.
What makes a haircut an undercut?
An undercut is defined by contrast: the hair on top is substantially longer than the hair at the sides and back. In a disconnected undercut, that contrast ends at a distinct boundary rather than blending gradually. A fade, by contrast, graduates the side length from shorter to longer. Because barbers and style guides sometimes use “undercut” loosely, name the side treatment you want instead of relying on the label alone. See CADMEN Barber Academy’s overview of the undercut and City Barbers NYC’s guide to the terminology.

The top style is a separate choice. Slicking hair back, shaping it into a pompadour, sweeping it to one side, or leaving it textured describes how the longer top is worn; it does not necessarily identify a distinct, standardized cut. For that reason, use the looks below as combinations of top shape, texture, and side treatment. A reference photo can help communicate their proportions.
20 undercut styles to consider
Classic and clean silhouettes
- Classic disconnected undercut. Keep the sides and back short and the top longer, with a clear boundary between them. Tell your barber explicitly that you do not want the transition blended.
- Undercut fade. Keep the longer top, but graduate the sides into a fade instead of leaving a hard disconnection. Specify the fade as the side treatment so the intended contrast is clear.
- Slicked-back undercut. Comb or brush the longer top backward; the short sides make the change in silhouette pronounced. Discuss whether the sides should be faded or disconnected.
- Pompadour undercut. Build volume at the front of the top and direct the hair back. Agree on the amount of top length and the side treatment before the cut.
- Side-swept undercut. Direct the longer top to one side. Clarify which way you part or sweep it and whether you want the sides faded or disconnected.
- Textured-top undercut. Leave movement and separation in the top rather than asking for a uniformly slick finish. Choose a fade or a distinct boundary separately.
- Natural-fall undercut. Let the top follow its existing growth direction instead of forcing it into a new shape. This is worth discussing if your hair resists being directed back or across.
Pairing a defined top with a fade or disconnection
- Disconnected slick-back. Combine a brushed-back top with a distinct, unblended boundary above the short sides.
- Faded slick-back undercut. Wear the top slicked back and ask for the side length to graduate into a fade rather than stop at a sharp line.
- Disconnected pompadour. Shape volume at the front and direct it back, with a clear boundary between the top and sides.
- Faded pompadour undercut. Pair a voluminous, backward-directed top with a graduated fade on the sides.
- Textured disconnected undercut. Keep visible texture and movement in the top while preserving a clear, unblended side-to-top boundary.
- Textured undercut fade. Combine a textured top with a graduated finish at the sides.
- Loose side-swept undercut. Sweep the top to one side without making it look tightly combed into place. Specify the part and side treatment.
- Side-part undercut. Make the part an explicit part of the request. “Undercut” alone does not tell the barber where to put it or how the sides should transition.
Adjusting length and working with texture
- Long-top disconnected undercut. Keep extra length on top for more ways to shape it, with a clear boundary above the short sides. Longer hair also means more styling commitment.
- Shorter-top undercut. Reduce the top length for a less dramatic proportion. Have your barber choose a length that still supports the style you want.
- Thick-hair undercut. Discuss how much length the top needs for movement. CADMEN’s guide to wearing the men’s undercut notes that thicker hair may need sufficient top length for movement and versatility.
- Wavy textured undercut. Let the wave contribute to the top’s texture instead of treating it as a smooth, uniform surface. Confirm the top length and side contrast with your barber.
- Curly undercut. Keep the curl pattern as the defining feature on top and discuss the shape with a barber familiar with your hair’s growth pattern. The undercut structure is used across hair types, but the result depends on your hair and the cut.
These combinations draw on the practical descriptions in Haircut Inspiration’s disconnected undercut guide and CADMEN’s barber guidance. They are not twenty official industry categories, and none is ranked as universally best.

What to tell your barber
Describe the top and sides separately. This avoids a common mismatch: you and your barber may use the same style name while picturing different lengths or transitions.
- Start with the top shape. Say whether you want a slick-back, pompadour, side sweep, textured finish, or natural fall. If you want a part, say where.
- Name the side treatment. Ask for consistently short sides, a taper or fade, or a distinct disconnection. If you want a sharp boundary, say that you do not want it blended.
- Discuss length and growth direction. Ask the barber to assess your hair type and natural direction before settling on the top length and cutting angle.
- Be clear about styling effort. Explain how much time you want to spend styling the top. Longer tops allow more shaping options but ask more of your routine.
- Bring a reference photo. Use it to show the proportions and finish you mean, not as a guarantee of an identical result on different hair.
A useful way to phrase the request is: “I want [your chosen top style] with [short sides, a fade, or a disconnected boundary]. Please set the top length for my hair’s growth direction and how much time I want to style it.” Barberstake similarly advises specifying the side treatment—natural scissor-cut sides, a taper, a full fade, or a disconnected undercut—rather than relying on a slick-back label alone: Barberstake’s slicked-back styling guide.

How to style the top
Start with the finish you asked for in the chair. A pomade is one product category to consider for a slick or structured look; matte clay or paste may suit a textured finish. These are options, not requirements or universal formulas. The intended shape and the way your hair behaves should guide the choice. The available barber and hairstyle guides describe styling combinations, but do not establish one product as best for every person.
