Urwerk EMC SR-71 vs. MB&F HM8 Mark 2: Which Watch Fits Your Priorities?

The Urwerk EMC SR-71 lets its wearer monitor and adjust timing; the MB&F HM8 Mark 2 projects hours and minutes through sapphire prisms. Compare their mechanisms, fit, construction, and historical reported prices.

The Urwerk EMC SR-71 and MB&F HM8 Mark 2 are unconventional mechanical watches, but they solve different problems. The EMC lets its wearer check the watch’s rate against an electronic reference and adjust its timing; the HM8 Mark 2 uses sapphire prisms to project the time vertically from horizontally placed discs. The choice is less about picking a universal winner than deciding whether you value an interactive timing system or an automotive-inspired optical display.

Two different ideas of what a complication should do

Urwerk EMC SR-71: check and adjust the rate

URWERK’s EMC concept combines a mechanical watch with electronic monitoring. In the SR-71, an electronic reference circuit lets the wearer check the mechanical movement’s rate and use an accessible adjustment to correct its timing. The complication is functional: it gives the owner a way to assess how the watch is running rather than merely presenting the time in an unusual format. Fratello’s direct comparison describes this SR-71 system and its user adjustment (Fratello’s comparison); URWERK describes the broader EMC concept on its EMC collection page.

MB&F HM8 Mark 2: transform the time display

The HM8 Mark 2’s complication changes how the time reaches the eye. Its hours and minutes are shown on horizontally placed discs, then reflected through sapphire prisms so the display appears vertically to the wearer. MB&F describes an in-house jumping-hour and trailing-minute module powered by a Girard-Perregaux base movement. This is a display-first idea: the watch makes reading time an architectural feature rather than adding an electronic rate-checking function.

How the displays work in everyday use

The HM8 Mark 2 shows jumping hours and trailing minutes through its optical projection. The result is distinct from a conventional dial, but the unusual viewing arrangement is central to the experience: the wearer reads the display as projected through the prisms, not from hands sweeping across a face.

The EMC SR-71’s indicators serve the watch’s monitoring concept. Its appeal is not simply an alternative way to show hours and minutes; it is the ability to check the movement’s rate and adjust it. If you want an elaborate time display, the HM8 Mark 2’s prisms are the more direct expression of that goal. If you are drawn to the idea of interacting with a mechanical watch’s timing, the EMC’s electronic reference system is the defining difference.

Dimensions, materials, and wrist presence

Fratello reports these dimensions and describes the HM8 Mark 2 as the more wearable of the two. That wearability assessment is the comparison author’s judgment, not a universal fit guarantee; case shape and thickness matter alongside the stated measurements.

Watch Reported dimensions Construction described
Urwerk EMC SR-71 47.55 × 49.57 × 17.58 mm (Fratello) Stainless steel and titanium (Fratello)
MB&F HM8 Mark 2 41.5 × 47 × 19 mm (Fratello; MB&F’s technical document lists 47 × 41.5 × 19 mm) Grade 5 titanium with CarbonMacrolon body panels and sapphire components (MB&F)

The measurements make the trade-off less obvious than case width alone might suggest: Fratello reports the HM8 Mark 2 as narrower and slightly thicker, while calling it more wearable overall. MB&F’s construction pairs titanium with CarbonMacrolon panels and complex sapphire elements, supporting the car-inspired body and projected display. Fratello describes the EMC SR-71’s case as stainless steel and titanium.

Movement specifications and water resistance

MB&F lists the HM8 Mark 2 with an automatic movement, a 42-hour power reserve, a 22K gold winding rotor, 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz), 247 movement components, and 30 jewels. Its technical document gives a water-resistance rating of 30 m / 3 atm.

URWERK’s EMC collection page gives general EMC-family figures of 43 × 51 × 15.8 mm, an 80-hour power reserve, and 3 ATM water resistance. Those are family-level specifications on the available page, not verified SR-71-specific figures, so they should not be used as the SR-71’s specifications. The exact SR-71 water-resistance rating is not established here. For either watch, follow the maker’s current guidance for water exposure and servicing; a rating should not be treated as a promise of suitability for every aquatic activity.

Historical prices and buying considerations

Fratello’s September 2024 comparison reported prices of CHF 150,000 for the Urwerk EMC SR-71 and CHF 73,000 for the MB&F HM8 Mark 2. These are historical reported figures, not verified current prices or a guarantee of what a buyer will pay. Confirm current local pricing, taxes, production status, and availability with the manufacturers or an authorized retailer before making a purchase decision.

The reported price difference is substantial, but the watches are not close substitutes: one centers on monitoring and adjusting mechanical rate, the other on a prism-projected display and car-inspired construction. Compare them by the feature you expect to enjoy, along with fit, service expectations, and your budget—not by price alone.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose the EMC SR-71 if the idea of checking a mechanical movement’s rate against an electronic reference and adjusting its timing is the main attraction. Its defining feature is wearer interaction with timekeeping performance.
  • Choose the HM8 Mark 2 if you want the time display itself to be the spectacle: jumping hours and trailing minutes projected vertically through sapphire prisms, in a Grade 5 titanium and CarbonMacrolon case.
  • Compare fit before deciding if wrist comfort is a priority. Fratello’s measurements and wearability judgment are useful reference points, but they cannot determine how either case will feel on your wrist.
  • Verify current details before purchase because the cited prices date to September 2024, production status and editions can change, and the available URWERK family specifications do not establish exact SR-71 specifications.

MB&F calls the HM8 Mark 2 “a true supercar for the wrist”—a promotional description that captures the design direction, not an independent verdict. Fratello frames the pairing partly as a thought experiment; in practical terms, the decision is whether you want a watch that invites you to engage with its rate or one that makes the display an optical and architectural event.
