La Quête du Temps is a monumental Vacheron Constantin clock in which an animated figure helps indicate the time; the Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Quest of Time, reference 7200A/000G-H103, is a separate wristwatch inspired by that project. The clock is the larger idea: astronomical timekeeping joined to an automaton, mechanical engineering and decorative arts.
What is Vacheron Constantin La Quête du Temps?
Vacheron Constantin presented La Quête du Temps in 2025 in connection with its 270th anniversary. The Maison says the project took seven years to develop. It describes the work as comprising three parts: a dome, an astronomical clock and a base. At 107 cm tall and incorporating 23 complications, it is an architectural horological work rather than a conventional clock intended for an ordinary room.
The Maison characterizes it as the first timepiece to feature an automaton as a functional time-telling complication. That “first-ever” description is Vacheron Constantin’s claim, not an independently established industry-wide finding.
How does the La Quête du Temps automaton tell time?
The clock’s Astronomer is not simply a decorative figure that moves on a timer. Vacheron Constantin says the figure performs 144 distinct gestures to indicate the time. A system of 158 cams orchestrates those movements and is linked to a mechanical memory system. The animated figure therefore participates in the display of time, making the automaton part of the clock’s timekeeping concept.

The project also connects the Astronomer’s choreography with music. Vacheron Constantin credits composer Woodkid with collaborating on melodies for the choreographed sequences, and says astronomers from the Geneva Observatory were consulted. François Junod is credited with building the Astronomer.
What went into the clock’s design and construction?
Vacheron Constantin says more than 15 disciplines and métiers contributed to the project. The clock brings together high watchmaking and astronomical display with sculpture, miniature enamel painting, engraving, gem setting, marquetry, enamelling, celestial cartography and music. Its dome, constellation map, astronomical mechanism and base are designed as coordinated elements rather than isolated features.

The Maison’s account gives a sense of the time involved in the decorative work: it says six months of testing came before painting the dome’s star map, while finding a rock-crystal base of the desired size and clarity took two years. Those are the brand’s descriptions of its process, not independently audited production measurements.
How is the Tribute to the Quest of Time wristwatch different?
The Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Quest of Time, reference 7200A/000G-H103, is a distinct wristwatch inspired by the monumental clock—not a smaller version of it. Vacheron Constantin lists a 43 mm white-gold case and a manually wound movement with 512 components. Its official product page specifies a 144-hour, or six-day, power reserve and 30 m water resistance. Specifications are brand-listed and can vary or change by reference or market.

The Astronomer-like figure’s arms form a double retrograde hour display. The brand says the display can be set for continuous indication or held in a fixed position. A three-dimensional moon appears on the dial, while the reverse shows a celestial display.
