It can refer to first-generation references 42040 and 42042, or to the later 2305V/100A-B078. The title’s “elegant underdog” framing comes from a 2022 Fratello feature about a particular no-date model with small seconds; its dial layout is not shared by every 37 mm Overseas.
What is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 37mm?
It is a useful shorthand, not a complete model name. The Overseas has appeared in different generations and references, and the case size, movement and dial configuration depend on which watch is meant. For a vintage listing or a current catalogue model, check the reference before relying on a generic “37 mm” description.
The Overseas launched in 1996. Vacheron Constantin’s historical material identifies the stainless-steel 42052 as a date model with calibre 1311. A specialist reference guide describes the first generation as running from 1996 to 2004; that dating and the detailed reference map below are guide-reported vintage information, not current-product specifications.
Which Overseas reference is 37 mm?
The first-generation 37 mm references are 42040 and 42042, according to the Watch Brothers London reference guide (published 2025; accessed 2026). The same guide identifies the 42050 and 42052 as 35 mm. A separate, much later 37 mm Overseas is reference 2305V/100A-B078, identified with calibre 5300 in Vacheron Constantin’s French catalogue. These references belong to different generations and should not be treated as one specification set.

Dimensions alone do not establish the generation. Vacheron Constantin’s 2025–26 English catalogue lists 34.5 mm self-winding models, while its historical material identifies the second-generation 47040 as 42 mm with calibre 1226 and a 40-hour power reserve. Those examples underline why size and specifications must be tied to a reference and generation.
What is the difference between the 42040 and 42042?
The reference guide associates the 42040 with calibre 1310 and the 42042 with calibre 1311. It describes the movement as automatic, COSC-certified and based on the Girard-Perregaux 3100, with quickset date and hacking seconds. It also reports 150 m water resistance for the first-generation 37 mm automatic. Treat these as guide-reported vintage specifications, not as a guarantee about the condition or present water resistance of a particular used watch.

The guide cautions that the transition between calibres was not a perfectly simple dividing line: transitional examples may not follow a reference-to-calibre rule. Do not infer the movement solely from a listing title or case reference. Ask for clear movement and serial documentation and have a qualified specialist assess any mismatch or uncertainty.
Why was this 37 mm Overseas called an “elegant underdog”?
Thor Svaboe’s Fratello feature, published March 21, 2022, uses that phrase for a specific 37 mm variation. The watch discussed has a blue sunray-brushed dial, no date and a small-seconds subdial at nine o’clock. Svaboe’s appreciation of its restrained proportions and unusual subdial placement is an editorial opinion about that watch, not a claim that all 37 mm Overseas models share its dial or occupy a measured market position.

The smaller case can be evaluated on its own terms rather than through gendered assumptions or the popularity of larger sports-watch sizes. Compare how the watch sits on your wrist, the case thickness and bracelet feel, whether the dial is easy for you to read, and whether you prefer a date or small seconds. There is no controlled wrist-size comparison in the cited material, so no single fit or comfort conclusion applies to every wearer.
Is the 37 mm Overseas a men’s or women’s watch?
“Men’s” and “women’s” are marketing labels, not technical descriptions of a 37 mm case. The relevant questions are whether the dimensions and proportions suit your wrist and whether you like the watch’s design and layout. Try the exact reference if possible; two watches sharing a nominal case diameter can differ in dial configuration and generation.

What to check when considering a first-generation 37 mm Overseas
A reference number is a starting point, not proof of a watch’s identity, originality or condition. For a pre-owned 42040 or 42042, assess the whole example rather than relying on a single visual clue.
- Reference and movement: Confirm the case reference, movement and serials against supporting documentation. Because transitional examples exist, ask a specialist to assess any discrepancy rather than assuming the reference alone settles it.
- Dial and components: Check the dial variant, inscriptions and lume for consistency with the specific watch. The guide notes variations and cautions that component use and dial details do not follow a perfectly linear pattern.
- Visual clue, not authentication: The guide reports a small luminous triangle to the right of the date on 37 mm models as a clue in comparison with the 35 mm version. It is not conclusive authentication.
- Condition and service: Inspect the case, dial, hands, movement and bracelet for condition and signs of alteration. Request available service history and arrange a qualified assessment; a historical water-resistance rating does not establish the sealing condition of a used watch today.
- Bracelet and papers: Check bracelet and clasp condition and what is included. The guide lists a COSC certificate and certificate of origin/warranty among materials typically accompanying a complete set; missing papers do not by themselves establish whether a watch is genuine.
Photographs can help identify questions to investigate, but they cannot authenticate a particular listing. Current prices, stock, dealer wait times and service costs are not established here; verify availability and service terms directly with a specialist dealer or qualified watchmaker familiar with vintage Overseas references.
How the current 37 mm catalogue model differs
The current-catalogue reference 2305V/100A-B078 is a separate model from the first-generation 42040 and 42042. Vacheron Constantin’s French catalogue identifies it as 37 mm with calibre 5300. The brand’s 2025–26 English catalogue search results also include 34.5 mm self-winding models, illustrating that the present assortment is not simply a continuation of the vintage 37 mm references. Catalogue availability may vary by region.
