Yes—a perpetual calendar can belong in a sports watch when the watch is understood as a luxury sports watch rather than equipment for demanding athletic use. In Brice Goulard’s 2016 hands-on review, the Overseas Ultra-Thin Perpetual Calendar’s appeal lies in that contrast: a recognizably sporty design paired with a refined, unusually slim calendar complication. It is an aesthetic and horological choice, not a claim that sports watches need perpetual calendars.
Why put a perpetual calendar in a sports watch?
A perpetual calendar, often abbreviated QP from the French quantième perpétuel, tracks the calendar through months of different lengths and leap years. That complexity can seem at odds with a sport-oriented watch: the complication may feel delicate, and a simpler time-only movement is easier to understand in that setting.
Goulard’s answer is that the Overseas is a luxury sports watch, where craftsmanship and complication can be part of the wearing pleasure. The calendar does not make the watch more suitable for sport; it gives the sporty design a different kind of mechanical and visual interest. As he put it in the 2016 review, “To answer the question in the introduction, yes, such a complicated movement is relevant in the Overseas.” That is a design judgment, not a universal rule about what a sports watch should be.
What the current Overseas 4300V offers
Vacheron Constantin’s Canadian product listing for reference 4300V/220G-B945 describes an 18K white-gold model with a dark-blue dial. The manufacturer’s specifications show how the watch balances a substantial calendar display with a relatively thin case.

The manufacturer says the calendar displays the correct date until 2100. That statement concerns the calendar’s date display; it does not remove the need to observe the watch’s operating and setting instructions. Vacheron Constantin also describes an interchangeable bracelet-and-strap system, with dark-blue rubber and grained calfskin accessories listed for this reference. Check compatibility against the precise reference before buying a third-party strap.
The manufacturer sums up the intended combination as: “This 18K white gold watch elegantly combines a Fine Watchmaking complication with a sporty aesthetic.”

What the 2016 hands-on review describes
The original Monochrome Watches review, by Brice Goulard and published 4 May 2016, covers the launch-era configuration rather than the current blue-dial listing. It describes a white-gold case and bracelet, a grey-beige dial, a 41.5 mm diameter and an 8.10 mm case height. The review says the watch was supplied with three options: a white-gold bracelet, a dark-grey alligator strap and a black rubber strap.
Goulard describes calibre 1120 QP as 4.05 mm thick, with 276 components and a 40-hour power reserve. He also considers the white-gold case in practical terms: compared with steel, precious metal affects price and weight and is more susceptible to scratches. Those are the reviewer’s observations about the wearing experience, not a claim that every owner will value the trade-offs in the same way.

The watch’s case dimensions and calendar movement make the contrast concrete: the current listing pairs a 41.5 mm white-gold case measuring 8.1 mm thick with an automatic perpetual calendar and moon-phase display. The point is not that this complication turns the Overseas into a tool for sport. Rather, the watch joins two identities—sporty styling and traditional fine-watchmaking—without asking the calendar to justify itself through athletic utility.

The original review placed this choice in the context of other luxury-sports collections as they stood in 2016, comparing the conceptual options then available in the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus ranges. That is dated context, not a current comparison of those collections. The more durable question is personal: whether you want a sports-watch design to carry the visual and mechanical richness of a perpetual calendar, or whether the clarity of a simpler movement better suits your idea of the category.
