The Vacheron Constantin Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Quest of Time is an unusual, 20-piece wristwatch that turns timekeeping into a small mechanical performance: a sculpted figure indicates the hours and minutes with its arms. Its inspiration, La Quête du Temps, is even more ambitious—a one-off astronomical clock whose automaton is part of the time-telling mechanism. The watch translates that spectacle convincingly to the wrist, but it is the monumental clock that gives the idea its full scale.
What makes the Tribute to the Quest of Time special?
Instead of conventional hands circling a central dial, a three-dimensional figure serves as the watch’s time display. Its arms point to separate double-retrograde scales for the hours and minutes, giving the watch a theatrical presentation while retaining a direct reading of the time. The concept echoes the animated figure at the heart of La Quête du Temps, but the wristwatch is a distinct, wearable object—not a miniature version of the clock.

How the figure display works
The figure’s arms indicate hours and minutes on double-retrograde scales. At 10 o’clock, a pusher changes the presentation between continuous time indication and a standby mode in which the arms are held down alongside the figure’s body. That choice makes the display more than a fixed novelty: the wearer can choose whether the figure remains in its animated time-telling pose or rests in a quieter presentation. The watch’s display is designed around that motion, so its character is inseparable from how it shows time.

Hodinkee’s Mark Kauzlarich, writing after handling the watch at the manufacture, described the arms’ return as an intense snap-back and reported that the mechanism was designed to reduce its impact. Movement and astronomical indications
Caliber 3670 is a hand-wound movement with a stated power reserve of 144 hours, or six days. WatchTime reports that it contains 512 components and runs at 5 Hz. These figures describe the watch movement; they should not be confused with the far larger clock’s component count or complication total. WatchTime’s report

The celestial theme continues beyond the animated figure. The dial is a double-sapphire construction with a blue gradient and a celestial-vault motif showing the sky over Geneva in 1755. The watch also includes a moon indication and moon age. On the reverse, the sky chart tracks constellations in real time; Vacheron Constantin’s circa-2025 brochure states that its sidereal-time indication varies by one day in 9,130 years. Case, materials and practical limits
The official specifications list an 18K white-gold case measuring 43 mm in diameter and 13.58 mm thick, a transparent sapphire caseback, and water resistance of 3 bar (30 m). The cited specifications do not establish how the watch wears on different wrists, and there is no basis here for a comfort judgment. The watch and La Quête du Temps are different achievements
La Quête du Temps is the seven-year project that inspired the wristwatch. Vacheron Constantin says more than 15 expert disciplines contributed to the clock, conceived around time, the cosmos and human ingenuity. The Maison describes its Astronomer automaton as the first automaton used as a functional time-telling complication. It performs 144 distinct gestures, supported by a system of 158 cams and mechanical memory.
Fratello Watches reports that the one-off clock has 6,293 mechanical components and 23 complications, and describes it as not for sale. Those are specialist-reported details of the clock, not specifications of the wristwatch. The clock was exhibited at the Louvre in the Mécaniques d’art exhibition from 17 September to 12 November 2025; that exhibition has ended. Edition and price information
WatchTime and Hodinkee report that production is limited to 20 pieces. The official product page does not state a price; WatchTime says it is available on request, while Hodinkee reported that Vacheron Constantin declined to share it at launch. These sources do not establish a current price, inventory, resale value or buyer demand, so a price estimate would be speculative.
Verdict: a compelling translation, not the main spectacle
The wristwatch succeeds by preserving the clock’s central idea—a figure that makes time visible through movement—while adding a mode switch, a substantial hand-wound reserve and celestial displays suited to a wristwatch. Its distinctive display is the point, rather than an attempt to make time reading conventionally discreet. Yet the premise reaches its fullest expression in La Quête du Temps: the clock’s scale, gesture repertoire and mechanical memory make the watch’s theatrical inspiration easier to understand. The result is remarkable as a wristwatch, while the clock remains the more astonishing creation.
