Thierry Stern has said he intends to pass Patek Philippe to both of his sons, Adrien and Tristan, but he has named neither as his successor and has announced no timetable. The family business has one presidency today: Stern remains president, a role he has held since 2009. How the next generation will divide leadership and ownership remains unsettled in public.
Who will inherit Patek Philippe?
In October 2026, Thierry Stern said he planned to hand the business to both sons. He also said there was no timetable. The reports do not specify whether both sons would share operational leadership, how shares would be allocated, or who would become president. WatchPro and The Business of Fashion covered his comments.
That later statement is not the same as a settled succession plan. In an April 2024 interview, Stern described a possible arrangement in which one child would take the presidency and all the shares, while the other received compensation in some form. He presented it as a scenario, not a formal declaration. The 2026 reports do not say whether that ownership possibility still stands or has been revised. Who are Thierry Stern’s sons?
The sons named in 2026 coverage are Adrien and Tristan. A June 2025 interview offered a limited snapshot of their preparation: Stern said Adrien had just started at Patek Philippe, while his younger son was still finishing university. Stern also said it was too early to say definitively how leadership would evolve. That describes their circumstances at the time; it does not establish who is more likely to lead or how either will perform. CNA reported the interview.

Which son will become president of Patek Philippe?
No son has been publicly named as the next president. The available statements distinguish two separate questions: Thierry’s later intention to pass the business to both sons, and the still-unanswered question of who will hold the presidency. A transfer to both children does not, by itself, mean they will share that single office.
- Leadership: Stern described one child taking the presidency as a possible arrangement in 2024; the 2026 comments do not identify the next president.
- Ownership: The 2024 interview floated one child receiving all shares with compensation for the other. The later coverage does not disclose a final share allocation.
- Timing: Stern said in October 2026 that there was no timetable.
- Readiness: The 2025 comments place Adrien and his younger brother at different stages then, but do not establish a succession choice.
Will Patek Philippe remain family-owned?
Stern has said the company is intended to pass to his two sons. In October 2026, he also told The Business of Fashion, “The target is to stay independent.” Those comments indicate an intention to preserve independence and family involvement, not a disclosed legal or ownership structure. Neither the eventual distribution of shares nor the practical governance arrangement has been announced.

How did the Stern family come to lead Patek Philippe?
Patek Philippe’s official family history traces the family’s stewardship to 1932, when brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired the watchmaker after previously supplying it. The company’s account records the leadership milestones below. Patek Philippe’s official history identifies the family’s role and the president chronology.

In the 2024 Swissinfo interview, he said he encouraged his children at 16 to consider whether they wanted to enter the family company, since that decision could affect their education choices. The interview does not establish when either son made a decision or what role each will ultimately take.
