Vacheron Constantin marked its 270th anniversary in 2025 with two connected creations: La Quête du Temps, an astronomical clock featuring a time-telling automaton, and the double-sided Métiers d’Art – Tribute to the Quest of Time wristwatch inspired by it. The clock’s automaton makes gestures part of the time display; the watch translates the project’s astronomical ideas into a wearable format.
What is La Quête du Temps?
La Quête du Temps is an anniversary clock created for Vacheron Constantin’s 270th year. The Maison describes it as a seven-year undertaking exploring connections between time, the cosmos and human ingenuity. It is not presented as a conventional retail clock. The project also inspired a separate wristwatch, Métiers d’Art – Tribute to the Quest of Time.
The clock was shown at the Louvre in Paris as part of Mécaniques d’art, from 17 September to 12 November 2025. The Louvre now lists the exhibition as past; the reviewed official sources do not establish the clock’s current location or a new public viewing schedule. (Vacheron Constantin; Louvre)
How does the clock’s automaton tell time?
The clock’s Astronomer automaton is not merely decorative: Vacheron Constantin says it is the first timepiece to use an automaton as a functional time-telling complication. The Maison identifies automatier François Junod as the builder of the figure, whose choreographed movements indicate time.

According to the manufacturer, the Astronomer performs 144 distinct gestures. A system of 158 cams and a mechanical memory system linked to the clock coordinate those movements. The Louvre likewise describes the automaton as governed by 144 different gestures and movements. The “first” claim is Vacheron Constantin’s characterization, rather than an independently established industry-wide finding. (Vacheron Constantin; Louvre)
What went into making the clock?
Vacheron Constantin says more than 15 specialist disciplines contributed, spanning watchmaking, sculpture, celestial mapping, musical composition, miniature painting, engraving, gem setting, marquetry and enamelling. The figures below are the Maison’s published project details, not independent measurements.

- Two years: time spent sourcing rock crystal of the desired size and clarity for the base.
- 23 complications: the total stated in the Maison’s official video description.
- 15 patent applications filed: the same video’s total. Wallpaper* reported more than 6,000 mechanical components and described seven watchmaking patents and eight automaton patents, a breakdown that totals 15; applications filed should not be confused with patents granted.
Composer Woodkid created bespoke music for three choreographed sequences. The clock’s blend of mechanical action and sound is part of a wider effort to present astronomical time as both an exact system and a performance. (Vacheron Constantin; Vacheron Constantin official video; Wallpaper*)
What does the related Tribute to the Quest of Time watch do?
The wristwatch is a separate, double-sided object, not a miniature version of the clock. Its official brochure describes retrograde time indications on one side and astronomical displays on the reverse.

- Hours and minutes: a central gilded figure accompanies on-demand hours and minutes shown on double retrograde scales.
- Moon display: a hand-engraved, three-dimensional titanium moon sphere has a blue and yellow-gold two-tone coating, alongside a moon-age indication. Vacheron Constantin says its precision moon phase needs correction once every 122 years, compared with once every three years for a classic moon-phase display.
- Reverse sky chart: the reverse shows the northern-hemisphere sky as seen from Geneva and includes sidereal hours. Sidereal time follows the stars; the brochure says it differs from universal time by about four minutes per day and that the indication varies by one day in 9,130 years.
- Power reserve: two indicators cover a total of six days.

Why is this an anniversary project?
Vacheron Constantin identifies 2025 as the 270th anniversary of its founding in Geneva in 1755. The Maison’s stated motto is “do better if possible, and that is always possible.” In that context, the clock is a large-scale expression of the anniversary, while the related watch carries selected themes and astronomical displays into a wearable piece.
