The Valjoux 7750 is an automatic, cam-operated chronograph movement developed at Valjoux by Edmond Capt. ETA currently lists it with day and date, three chronograph counters, a 4 Hz frequency, and a typical 54-hour power reserve. When comparing watches, confirm the exact caliber and configuration: specifications and layouts can differ across versions and related movements.

What is the Valjoux 7750?

The 7750 is a self-winding mechanical chronograph. ETA’s current listing describes a two-button, cam-operated chronograph with hours, minutes, small seconds, day and date, and counters for 60 seconds, 30 minutes, and 12 hours.

It is best understood as a movement platform, not a guarantee that every watch described as “7750-based” is identical. Check the exact reference, functions, display, and manufacturer documentation for the watch you are considering.

ETA describes the 54-hour reserve as typical, not guaranteed for every watch. Actual performance depends on the specific movement and watch. A 4 Hz frequency does not by itself establish a particular daily rate or chronometer certification.

History and development

The Association of Watch and Clock Collectors’ profile of Edmond Capt says the base movement was completed in 1972 and that the 7750 debuted in 1973. The profile credits Capt with adapting the hand-wound Valjoux 7733 into an integrated automatic chronograph with day and date. Mido separately documents releasing a 7750-equipped chronograph in 1974. These dates describe different milestones rather than conflicting launch dates.

The design combined automatic winding and calendar functions with a cam-operated chronograph. The AWCC profile describes production-friendly design choices intended to support large-series manufacture. ETA’s current listing confirms the cam mechanism and unidirectional winding.

How the cam-operated chronograph works

The 7750 uses a cam and levers to coordinate chronograph start, stop, and reset. A column-wheel chronograph uses a different control architecture. These are design distinctions, not a universal ranking of quality: the behavior of a particular watch also depends on its execution, adjustment, and condition.

TOPHILL Men Watches Automatic Mechanical Watches — Dive, GMT, Chronograph & Dress Styles | 316L Stainless Steel, Sapphire Crystal, Ceramic Bezel | 5ATM-300M Waterproof with Super Luminous | Classic Business & Sport Casual
  • 【Authentic Seagull ST1901 Column-Wheel Chronograph】 — The legendary ST1901 hand-wound caliber delivers genuine column-wheel chronograph operation—a mechanism found in watches costing ten times more. With 19 jewels, 21,600 vph, and a 42-hour power reserve, every press of the pusher engages precise, tactile mechanical logic.
  • 【Aviation Heritage Reborn】 — Inspired by the legendary 1963 Air Force chronograph, this watch revives a piece of military horological history. The 40mm case, cathedral hands, and vintage Arabic numerals honor the original design while delivering modern 316L steel construction and sapphire crystal durability.
  • 【Dual-Strap Versatility】 — The breathable top-grain genuine leather racing strap delivers vintage motorsport character, while the additional Milanese mesh band transforms the watch into a sleek, contemporary dress piece. Two distinct personalities, one mechanical heart—curated for seamless style transitions.
  • 【Precision Timing Instruments】 — The tachymeter scale encircling the dial enables accurate speed calculations for motorsport, aviation, or athletic timing. Central chronograph seconds sweep smoothly at 6 beats per second, while the 30-minute and 12-hour sub-dials track elapsed intervals with mechanical precision.
  • 【Sapphire Crystal & 316L Steel Construction】 — Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the finely textured sandblasted dial, while the 316L stainless steel case resists corrosion and maintains its polished presence through years of daily wear. 5ATM water resistance handles rain, splashes, and the unexpected with robust elegance.

Dial layout and functions

In the configuration described by Mido, the 30-minute counter is at 12, small seconds at 9, the 12-hour counter at 6, and the day-date window at 3. Treat this as a configuration cue, not proof that every 7750-family watch has the same display. Check the specific watch’s documentation and functions.

ETA 7750 and Sellita SW500 compared

Sellita’s 2024–2025 catalogue lists SW500 family variants with several headline specifications similar to ETA’s current 7750 listing. The published reserve differs. Catalogue similarities do not establish that a particular SW500 variant can replace a particular ETA 7750.

Specification ETA 7750 Sellita SW500 family
Diameter 30.00 mm 30.00 mm
Height 7.90 mm 7.90 mm
Frequency 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz)
Jewels 25 25
Chronograph Cam-operated, two push-buttons Cam-operated, two push-buttons
Typical power reserve 54 hours 62 hours

ETA specifications are from ETA’s current 7750 product listing; SW500 figures are from Sellita’s 2024–2025 catalogue. Confirm the exact caliber and variant, hands, dial, calendar, case, and manufacturer documentation with the brand or a watchmaker before making any compatibility assumption.

Buying advice

A movement name alone is not enough to assess a watch. Check the exact caliber, configuration, condition, service documentation, and service support.

  1. Confirm the exact movement reference. Use reliable documentation for that specific watch; “7750-based” may refer to a related variant.
  2. Match the movement description to the watch. Confirm its functions, day-date configuration, and counter placement instead of assuming a standard layout.
  3. Ask about service history and condition. Assess the whole watch, not just the movement name. The research does not establish a universal service interval or current market price.
  4. Use a trained watchmaker for inspection or repair. ETA’s technical communication says repair and overhaul work should be performed by properly trained personnel.
  5. Compare manufacturer specifications carefully. For an SW500, consult Sellita’s catalogue and verify the exact variant; similar headline figures do not prove interchangeability.

Why the 7750 matters

The 7750 brought automatic winding, a cam-operated chronograph, and calendar functions together in a design intended for production at scale. Its lasting relevance is as a widely adapted movement platform, but a watch’s quality and character depend on its exact caliber, configuration, condition, and servicing.
