What is the Lady Arpels Planétarium?
Van Cleef & Arpels identifies VCARO8R500 as a 38 mm self-winding mechanical watch in its Poetic Astronomy collection. The Maison describes it as a women’s interpretation of the earlier Midnight Planétarium. The official product page presents the movement as developed specifically for the Maison. Van Cleef & Arpels’ product page is the reference for the model’s current official presentation.
Its defining feature is not a conventional central hour-and-minute display, but a celestial scene whose components move around the Sun. The watch combines that mechanical spectacle with precious materials and a comparatively simple shooting-star time indicator.
How does the Lady Arpels Planétarium watch work?
The watch’s planetarium module was developed in Switzerland in collaboration with Van Cleef & Arpels, according to maker Christiaan van der Klaauw, which describes the module as exclusive to the Maison. Fondation Haute Horlogerie says each celestial body moves at its actual speed. That description explains the display’s appeal, but it should not be mistaken for a claim that the watch is a scientific instrument or a precision astronomical display.

What planets and materials are shown?
The dial depicts the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and the Moon. Christiaan van der Klaauw identifies the individual materials: a pink-gold Sun, Mercury in pink mother-of-pearl, Venus in green enamel, Earth in turquoise and a diamond Moon. Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes seven aventurine discs, a blue dial, and a bezel and caseband set with diamonds.

The 38 mm case is white gold, with a sapphire back, according to Fondation Haute Horlogerie. The back has two apertures showing the day, month and year, alongside a crescent-shaped oscillating weight set with diamonds. For the strap, Fondation Haute Horlogerie specifies blue alligator with a pin buckle; Christiaan van der Klaauw calls it a blue glitter alligator strap.
How do you read the time?
A rhodium-plated gold shooting star indicates the time on the dial. Fondation Haute Horlogerie characterizes it as showing time “more with poetry than precision.” In practical terms, the time indication is integrated into the celestial composition rather than presented as a conventional, immediately legible set of hands. The sources reviewed do not establish an accuracy tolerance or provide a hands-on assessment of legibility.

Is the Lady Arpels Planétarium limited edition?
Fondation Haute Horlogerie lists the model as individually numbered and limited edition, but the reviewed sources do not state how many examples were made. Christiaan van der Klaauw says the Lady model was unveiled in 2018 and won the 2018 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève Ladies’ Complication category. The award and release date are reported by the collaborating maker.

A current retail price was not displayed on the Maison’s international product page, and Fondation Haute Horlogerie lists no amount under its indicated-price heading. The Maison’s page offers phone ordering and contact with client advisors, so ask Van Cleef & Arpels for a current quote and availability in your market rather than relying on an old resale listing or forum post.
