The exact reference matters: the documented 43 mm steel-and-ceramic CAR201W.BA0714 has an automatic Calibre HEUER01, grey dial, steel bracelet and 100 m water resistance, while other Heuer 01 versions differ in size, materials, dial and strap. TAG Heuer now lists this reference as discontinued, so buyers should treat it as a pre-owned or remaining-stock prospect and verify each listing individually.
Which Carrera Heuer 01 is this review about?
“Carrera Heuer 01” covers a family of configurations. A useful documented point of reference is TAG Heuer reference CAR201W.BA0714, identified on the TAG Heuer US product page as a discontinued model. Its specifications are specific to that reference, not every watch bearing the Heuer 01 name.
| Reference | Case | Movement | Dial | Water resistance | Bracelet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAR201W.BA0714 | 43 mm steel and ceramic | Automatic Calibre HEUER01 | Grey | 100 m | Steel bracelet; fixed steel-and-ceramic bezel |
These details come from TAG Heuer’s US listing for CAR201W.BA0714. The listing’s displayed price should not be read as a current offer or a market valuation: the brand marks the watch discontinued, and availability and pricing can vary by region and seller.
What the 43 mm size feels like
Felix Scholz’s review for Time+Tide, published 10 May 2017, considered the 43 mm variation alongside the original 45 mm format. His assessment was: “At 43mm it’s still a large watch, but not overwhelmingly so.” That is one reviewer’s fit impression, not a guarantee for every wrist.
Scholz found the 43 mm option less overwhelming than the 45 mm while still substantial. He also noted that the smaller dial retained its central detail but changed the framing and shortened the hour batons; he considered the 45 mm indices a little more balanced. Those comments describe his subjective response, not a difference in measured performance.
His comments about a light, secure feel apply to the titanium versions he discussed, whose short lugs helped the watch sit comfortably. They should not be transferred directly to the steel CAR201W.BA0714: case material affects weight, and the cited review does not establish how that exact steel reference wears on an individual wrist. If fit is a concern, try the precise reference on wrist or compare its dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable.

Dial and configuration differences to check
The 2017 review describes 43 mm models with both skeleton and solid dials, and titanium versions in black, blue and brown. It also discusses titanium bracelet, alligator strap and rubber options. These are family-level examples, not a parts list for CAR201W.BA0714. Confirm the dial, case material and included strap or bracelet against the reference number and the actual watch being offered.
A skeleton dial puts the movement’s architecture on display and gives the watch a more visually busy character. A solid dial changes that effect and can make the time display read more conventionally. The review’s comparison suggests the 43 mm dial layout is not simply a scaled-down copy of the 45 mm: framing and index proportions change as well.

Movement and the Heuer 01’s place in the Carrera line
TAG Heuer’s vintage collection history says the Carrera Heuer-01 launched in 2015 with a modified Calibre 1887, modular case construction and an open-skeleton dial. The brand states that the Heuer 01 movement was discontinued in 2018 and that the skeleton Carrera chronograph line was subsequently revised around Heuer 02. “Heuer 01” is therefore a legacy designation in the current collection context, not a guarantee that a particular watch remains in current production.
The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève model record for the Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 Chronograph 43 mm lists a 50-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Those figures belong to that model record; confirm that a particular watch’s reference matches before applying them to its specification. They are published figures, not results from independent timing tests here.

Is a Carrera Heuer 01 worth considering now?
It can make sense for someone who wants a large, assertive Carrera chronograph and is comfortable buying a discontinued model. The 43 mm format offers a less imposing alternative to the original 45 mm according to Scholz’s period review, but remains a sizable watch. The openworked design and range of case and dial combinations are part of the appeal; they also make reference-level checking essential.
Because TAG Heuer identifies CAR201W.BA0714 as discontinued, a buyer should compare like with like rather than infer value from a brand-page price or from another Heuer 01 configuration. Before committing, verify:
Recommended Free Tools
- Reference and configuration: Match the reference number, case material, diameter, dial, bezel and bracelet or strap to the watch in the listing.
- Condition and provenance: For a pre-owned example, request clear photos, service and ownership records where available, and an account of any repairs or replacement parts.
- Authenticity: Use a reputable specialist and have the watch authenticated if documentation or seller history is incomplete.
- Function: Confirm that the chronograph starts, stops and resets correctly, and obtain an appropriate timekeeping and condition assessment. No performance test is established here.
- Current price and availability: Check recent, region-specific offers for the same reference and condition; current stock and market prices are not established by the discontinued brand listing.
For straps, do not assume that family-wide strap options fit every reference. Confirm the exact attachment and dimensions for the watch before ordering a replacement.
