A reported 1972 Seiko 6105-8110 connected to a Vietnam veteran is a compelling individual story, not proof that the model was issued to U.S. troops or commonly worn by them. The watch belongs to Seiko’s 6105 diver family; its later “Captain Willard” nickname comes from Martin Sheen’s watch in the 1979 film Apocalypse Now.
What the Vietnam-era story does—and does not—establish
A Fratello article recounts a 1972 6105-8110 associated with a Vietnam veteran named Dean. That is the provenance claim the account supports: a particular watch and a particular veteran’s story. It does not establish how many U.S. service members owned the model, that the watch was military-issued, or that every 6105-8110 has a service history. Read the account of the veteran’s 6105-8110.
Seiko’s official history documents the model family’s watchmaking context, but does not document military sales in Vietnam. Claims that Seiko watches were available through military post exchanges in Southeast Asia appear in secondary watch coverage and auction descriptions; the material cited here does not establish a primary sales record.
Where the 6105-8110 fits in Seiko’s diver history
Seiko dates its 150-meter diver to 1970 and highlights its large case extension, which shields the crown at 4 o’clock. The 6105-8110 belongs to the later, larger asymmetric-case generation of the 6105 family, alongside the 6105-8119. Seiko also connects the 1970 diver with adventurer Naomi Uemura’s expeditions. Seiko’s history of the 1970 diver provides the company’s chronology and account of that expedition connection; a specialist reference groups the 8110 and 8119 as later asymmetric variants. See the specialist reference on the 6105-8110 and 6105-8119.

What a cataloged 6105-8110 example looks like
Specifications should be tied to a specific watch unless a source establishes them for the entire production run. Bonhams cataloged a circa-1974 6105-8110 with these attributes:
| Cataloged detail | Bonhams’ circa-1974 example |
|---|---|
| Movement | Automatic Seiko caliber 6105B, 17 jewels |
| Display | Date at 3 o’clock; black dial; luminous cube hour markers and hands |
| Case and bezel | Stainless steel; 45 mm; black-insert bezel; protected crown at 4 o’clock |
| Caseback | Screw-down |
These are catalog details for that auction lot, not a guarantee that every production variant measures exactly 45 mm or shares every listed feature. Bonhams also notes the model’s later “Captain Willard” nickname. View Bonhams’ catalog entry.

Seiko’s available 6105A service sheet documents an automatic movement with date calendar, 17 jewels and a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour. It concerns caliber 6105A, however, and should not be treated as a complete specification sheet for every 6105-8110 or as proof of all 6105B details. Consult Seiko’s 6105A technical sheet.
Why it is called a “Captain Willard”
In Apocalypse Now (1979), Martin Sheen wears a 6105 diver as Captain Benjamin Willard. The nickname “Captain Willard” attached to the watch retrospectively through the film, as Bonhams describes. Although the film is set during the Vietnam War, it was made later; the screen appearance does not verify the provenance of a vintage watch or establish that this reference was issued to soldiers.

How to assess an individual vintage example
A reference number and a plausible period story are not enough to establish a watch’s originality, condition or service history. For a particular 6105-8110, look at the evidence for that specific example:
- Provenance: Ask what documents, photographs or ownership history support a Vietnam-era connection. Treat a seller’s account as a claim unless it is substantiated.
- Configuration: Compare the dial, hands, bezel, case and movement with reliable reference material, while allowing for documented production variation and later replacement parts.
- Movement and function: Have a qualified watchmaker assess the movement and calendar operation. A movement designation alone does not establish serviceability.
- Water resistance: Seiko’s historical 150-meter rating describes the model’s design, not the current sealing of a decades-old watch. A vintage example needs individual inspection and appropriate testing before any exposure to water.
- Condition and originality: Polishing, corrosion, replacement components and past repairs affect both the watch’s state and the confidence of any historical attribution.
How the vintage watch compares with a modern reinterpretation
Seiko has made modern Prospex reinterpretations of its 1970 diver. They draw on the historical design but are contemporary watches, not vintage 6105-8110s. Seiko’s Prospex brochure documents the reinterpretation category. It does not establish current stock, price or a specific retailer listing.

| Consideration | Vintage 6105-8110 | Modern 1970 diver reinterpretation |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A historical member of the later 6105 asymmetric-case family | A present-day Prospex design reinterpretation |
| Individual condition | Depends on the specific watch’s age, maintenance, originality and sealing | Depends on the particular current model and its condition |
| Movement and features | Verify the movement and configuration on the individual example; catalog details vary by source and watch | Check the exact model’s official listing for its movement and features |
| Availability | Depends on the individual secondhand listing | Depends on the exact model, region and current retailer availability |
The vintage route is for someone who values the period watch and accepts the need to verify condition and provenance. A modern reinterpretation is the clearer option for someone seeking a current watch inspired by the 1970 design rather than the history of a specific vintage example.
