Which of the 20 should you consider?
There is no single winner for every buyer. Deschamps selected these watches for different reasons, and their movements, case designs and intended uses vary substantially. Start with the job you want the watch to do, then check how it will wear and what you value in its construction.
For a diver
The Belhamel Contra A39 is the pick with the highest stated water-resistance rating in this group. The Element, FLX003, Nemo, LM02 Type C, Onward, Epoch Sport Monochrome, Type 7B, Dual Series 01 and Iceborne are also listed at 200m. These figures describe the watches’ stated ratings; they do not by themselves establish suitability for a particular activity. Consider crystal material, case dimensions, bezel or clasp features, and the style you actually want alongside the rating.

For a GMT or travel-oriented watch
The RZE Fortitude GMT-S is the only GMT in the selection. Its listed movement is the Miyota 9075, and the article highlights its low weight and on-the-fly bracelet adjustment. If tracking another time zone is the deciding feature, it is the clearest match in this set; verify the movement’s operation and current product details with the seller before purchase.
For a chronograph
The three chronographs take different approaches. The Pulsatimer is a hand-wound mechanical model with a pulsometer scale; the HZ.02 and LM02 Type C use Seiko meca-quartz movements. The HZ.02 is the smallest by listed diameter and lug-to-lug, while the LM02 is the option with the highest stated water-resistance rating among these chronographs. Choose based on the movement experience and format you prefer, not simply the word “chronograph.”

For a field, pilot or everyday watch
The Chamonix, Onward, Iceborne and Type 7B lean toward field or military-inspired use, while the Peregrine is the explicitly pilot-style choice. For a more general everyday sports watch, the Element, Facet and MB2 Kenkyū offer distinct design directions. The Rambler is the smallest by diameter in the selection, but its 44mm lug-to-lug is still worth comparing with a watch that already fits you.
For a distinctive design
Look to the Facet for faceted case surfaces, the Nemo and MB2 Kenkyū for unusually individual designs and dial treatments, and the Retter Mistral for its multilevel construction and unconventional lug form. The Treiber makes its automotive inspiration central, while the Type 7B draws on an unproduced 1990s military design. These are taste-led choices rather than interchangeable alternatives.

How to compare fit, movement and value
Use the full dimensions, not diameter alone
Diameter across the list runs from 36mm for the Rambler to 42.5mm for the Type 7B. But lug-to-lug length often determines whether the watch sits comfortably across a wrist, and thickness affects how it feels under a cuff. Compare all three measurements with a watch you own or can try on; case shape and lug geometry can change the feel even when the numbers look similar.
Decide what kind of movement you want
Most selections use automatic mechanical movements, with the Pulsatimer providing the manual-winding option. The HZ.02 and LM02 Type C use meca-quartz chronograph movements, and the Onward uses a Ronda quartz caliber. The listed longer reserves are 63 hours for the Pulsatimer’s Sellita and 68 hours for the Facet’s La Joux-Perret. A movement label alone does not tell you about servicing access, warranty, accuracy in use or long-term ownership costs; ask the maker or retailer about those before buying.

Interpret the prices as historical, not live offers
The article’s stated prices range from US$275 for the Onward to €2,060 for one Facet bracelet configuration. Many of the dollar-denominated picks fall between US$499 and US$1,100, but currency, configuration and preorder status differ. Those are prices reported in a retrospective published in January 2025, not verified current offers. The article also reported that all three Mistral versions had sold out when it was published; that does not establish their present availability.
