Apollo 13’s lunar module engine fired for 14.8 seconds to fine-tune the spacecraft’s path back to Earth. NASA records the maneuver at 105 hours and 18 minutes into the flight. Jack Swigert timed the correction with his Speedmaster while commander James Lovell controlled the spacecraft—a crucial contribution to a rescue that depended on far more than a watch.
What happened during Apollo 13’s 14.8-second burn?
Apollo 13 launched on April 11, 1970, with James Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise aboard. An oxygen-tank failure crippled the service module and ended the planned lunar landing. The crew and Mission Control then worked to bring the spacecraft safely home.
During the return, the lunar module’s descent propulsion system fired for 14.8 seconds. NASA’s mission history places the maneuver at 105 hours and 18 minutes into the flight and says it fine-tuned the spacecraft’s reentry path into Earth’s atmosphere. The mission ran from April 11 through April 17, 1970, according to NASA’s Apollo 13 onboard transcript.
The familiar phrase “Fourteen Life-Saving Seconds” rounds the duration: NASA’s recorded figure is 14.8 seconds, not exactly 14. The distinction matters, as does the maneuver’s specific purpose: it adjusted the return trajectory rather than, by itself, accomplishing the entire rescue. NASA’s mission history documents the timing and role of the burn.

How did the Speedmaster help Apollo 13 get home?
Omega says Apollo 13’s crew members were equipped with Speedmaster Professional chronographs, and the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry recounts that Swigert used his Speedmaster to time the correction in the absence of digital timers. Lovell guided the spacecraft using Earth’s horizon. NASA independently records the engine firing’s duration; the account of Swigert timing it with a Speedmaster comes from Omega and the federation, rather than NASA’s description of the maneuver.
Lovell described the division of work in a statement quoted by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry: “We used the watch that Jack had on his wrist and I had to control the spacecraft. Jack timed the burn on the engine to make that correction to get us back home safely.”

That account makes the watch’s role concrete: it provided elapsed-time measurement during a precisely timed engine firing, while Lovell handled spacecraft control. It does not establish a numerical accuracy measurement for Swigert’s watch, nor does it identify the exact Speedmaster reference he wore. The modern Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch is part of the model family’s history, but the available accounts do not show that a current Moonwatch is the exact historical watch Swigert used.

The Speedmaster could time the burn; it could not choose the return trajectory, operate the engine or fly the spacecraft. The 14.8-second firing was one maneuver in a complex effort by the crew and Mission Control after the service-module failure. NASA’s account identifies the engine as the lunar module’s descent propulsion system and describes the burn as a correction to the reentry path. The watch’s contribution was practical and specific, not a substitute for the people and systems that made the return possible.
