The vintage Citizen Challenge Timer is a useful example, but “bullhead” describes a design, not a certification of a watch’s make, originality, or condition. If you are considering one, check its exact reference, dial, components, and operation—and arrange an expert inspection when the seller cannot substantiate its history.
What makes a chronograph a bullhead?
“Bullhead” is a collector and editorial nickname for a chronograph with its crown and controls at the top of the case. From the front, the arrangement can suggest a head with horns. The top-mounted controls are associated with motorsports timing and easier access while using the chronograph, though the distinctive case shape can be bulky and remains a niche design. The term has no single formal standards definition, so it is best used to describe the layout rather than as a precise model name. Wallpaper*’s overview traces an Omega bullhead to 1969 and notes follow-on examples from Seiko, Breitling, and Tissot in the early 1970s.
Because the case shape must be individually tooled, the design is not simply a conventional chronograph with different controls. Neall Brick, identified by Wallpaper* as Citizen’s director of merchandising, described the bullhead as visually distinctive but unlikely to become a major trend because of its production economics. That helps explain its niche appeal; it does not establish how rare or valuable any particular reference is.
Which vintage watches are useful examples?
Citizen Challenge Timer
Collector sources commonly discuss Citizen Challenge Timer references 67-9011 and 67-9356 as bullheads. They are useful starting points for understanding the category, but details for one reference should not be assumed to apply to every Citizen or every bullhead.

- Glass: Sapphire Crystal Glass With Anti-Reflective Coating / Case: 316L High precision stainless steel, individually numbered
- Movement: Miyota 6S11 Chronograph (Quartz)
- Water resistance: 5 ATM tested (Avoid use when diving)
- Size: 41 mm wide, 11 mm thick
- Strap: Italian leather (genuine) with Pin buckle, 20mm width
The collector reference for the 67-9356 describes an octagonal steel case, top-mounted crown and pushers, three contrasting subdials, day/date display, tachymeter scale, and Citizen 8110A automatic chronograph movement. It describes that movement as having 23 jewels, hand-winding capability, and flyback operation. These are reference-specific descriptions, not a substitute for verifying the configuration of the individual watch. Citizen’s current collection pages are not a vintage service specification; use the collector reference and clear photographs to assess an older example.
Flyback lets the wearer reset a running chronograph and begin timing again in one operation. It is a useful function to understand when assessing an 8110A-equipped watch, but a chronograph that starts or resets is not thereby proven to be properly serviced or mechanically healthy. The 67-9356 information comes from a collector reference, not a current manufacturer service document. A collector discussion of the 8110A flyback function can provide additional context, but it is not a substitute for an inspection.

Other chronographs and an important distinction
Vintage bullheads are not limited to Citizen, but the available examples do not establish a comprehensive catalogue of models. Seiko’s official heritage account identifies its 1964 Crown Chronograph as Japan’s first wristwatch equipped with a stopwatch function. That makes it significant Japanese chronograph history, but the fact alone does not make the Crown Chronograph a bullhead: the category is defined by the top-control layout. Seiko’s heritage page for the Crown Chronograph explains the distinction in historical context.
How can you assess a vintage Citizen bullhead before buying?
Start with the exact reference and the specific watch in the listing. A familiar model name does not guarantee that every dial, hand, bracelet, or movement part is original. Collector sources note aftermarket dials and changed bracelet construction on Citizen examples, so treat photographs and seller descriptions as evidence to check—not proof by themselves.

1. Confirm the reference and compare like with like
- Ask for a clear photograph of the dial, case, and case back, and confirm the reference the seller is claiming.
- Compare the watch with reliable examples of that exact reference. Do not apply a 67-9011 dial clue as an authentication rule for a 67-9356 or another model.
- Check whether the case layout, subdial arrangement, calendar, tachymeter details, and other visible features are consistent with the reference.
2. Inspect the dial closely, without treating one clue as decisive
A specialist guide to the Citizen 67-9011 compares printing, lettering, indices, tachymeter details, and the placement of dial-code text when screening for aftermarket dials. Its examples include the alignment of “CHRONOGRAPH” beneath the applied Citizen logo and the layout of the tachymeter markings. These are model-specific visual clues, not a universal authentication formula: one apparent match does not prove originality, and one discrepancy alone does not prove a watch is fake. The Citizen collection page is not an authentication guide; for the 67-9011 comparison, consult the specialist collector guide and request sharp, straight-on images.
A 10× watchmaker’s loupe can help you see small printed details during this check. Magnification may make inconsistencies easier to spot, but it cannot authenticate the watch or tell you whether its movement is healthy.

- RACING-INSPIRED DUAL-LAYER DIAL—— Inspired by racing dashboards, the bold dual-layer dial delivers depth and clarity, featuring applied hour markers and a CD-textured chronograph subdial for easy reading in everyday wear.
- HAND-WOUND MECHANICAL CHRONOGRAPH—— Powered by the ST19 hand-wound chronograph movement. This mechanical watch does not use a battery—manual winding is required for normal operation and precise timing.
- DAILY MANUAL WINDING RITUAL—— To keep the watch running, gently rotate the crown clockwise about 15–20 turns each day. When resistance is felt, winding is complete—an engaging, hands-on mechanical experience.
- FUNCTIONAL CHRONOGRAPH WITH TACHYMETER—— Equipped with a mechanical chronograph and tachymeter scale for measuring speed over distance, inspired by classic motorsport instrumentation.
- COMFORTABLE FIT & EASY STRAP SWITCHING—— 40 mm case diameter with a 12.4 mm thickness offers balanced wrist presence. Lug width is 20 mm, paired with quick-release straps (120 + 80 mm) for easy daily switching between styles.
3. Check the case, bracelet, and visible condition
- Look for wear, damage, or signs of refinishing on the case, crystal, and controls. Ask for additional photographs if an angle or detail is obscured.
- Compare the bracelet’s construction with examples of the same reference. A bracelet that differs may be a replacement rather than evidence that the watch itself is counterfeit.
- Ask the seller to identify replaced, restored, or refinished components, and whether the dial is original to the watch.
4. Ask to see the functions and service evidence
Ask the seller to demonstrate the chronograph and calendar functions, including start, stop, reset, and—where applicable—flyback operation. A functioning hand or button is only a basic check; it does not establish timing performance, internal condition, or recent service. Request any service documentation and ask what work was completed. If originality, operation, or condition remains uncertain, have an independent watchmaker familiar with vintage chronographs inspect the specific watch before you commit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can historical figures tell you about the bullhead niche?
Seiko Museum Ginza reports that Swiss chronograph exports totaled fewer than 1 million watches, or 3.3% of Swiss watch exports, in 1990; 4.2 million, or 14.2%, in 2000; and 5.3 million, or 20.1%, in 2010. Those figures describe Swiss chronographs overall in the years reported, not bullhead production, sales, or collector demand. Seiko Museum Ginza’s chronograph history provides that broader industry context. No bullhead-specific market statistic or dependable current price comparison is established by these sources, so they do not support a claim that a particular reference is rare, a good investment, or currently worth a stated amount.
