These are design distinctions, not quality rankings. The family name alone does not establish which particular vintage example will look better on your wrist.
Why vintage fit depends on the exact reference
“Tank” and “Santos” each cover multiple watches; a collection name is not a case measurement. Ask for the exact reference and the case dimensions of the watch being offered. Try it on if possible, because the listed dimensions alone cannot tell you how a particular case and bracelet will feel on your wrist.

Modern Santos specifications illustrate why it is important not to generalize across a family. Cartier’s US Santos de Cartier collection page lists small, medium, and large models. A US medium steel listing specifies a 35.1 mm case width and 8.83 mm thickness. A separate UK small yellow-gold listing gives dimensions of 27 mm by 34.5 mm and a thickness of 7.08 mm. These are current product examples—not measurements for every Santos, or a proxy for a vintage watch.

Do not infer a vintage watch’s movement or features from a modern collection page. Cartier says the current Santos de Cartier collection uses automatic caliber 1847 MC, but other variants differ, and that does not establish the movement in a vintage Santos. Vintage Tank specifications likewise depend on the reference; the available information does not establish one movement for the family. For either watch, ask for reference-specific documentation and service records.

Water resistance needs particular care. Cartier states up to 10 bar (approximately 100 metres) for the current Santos de Cartier collection and for the cited US medium steel model. Its cited UK small yellow-gold quartz model is listed at 3 bar (approximately 30 metres). Those ratings apply to the specified current collection or product listing, not to vintage watches. A vintage watch’s water resistance depends on its present condition and appropriate assessment; do not treat the family name or a modern rating as assurance that an older example is safe around water.
What to verify before buying a vintage example
- Identify the watch. Ask for the exact reference and confirm that the description and paperwork correspond to the example being sold.
- Assess condition and originality. Examine the case, dial, hands, crown, and bracelet or strap. Ask which parts, if any, have been replaced or refinished, and request clear photographs or an in-person inspection.
- Review service history. Request dated service documentation and ask what work was done. If the records are incomplete, factor in uncertainty rather than assuming the watch has been serviced.
- Check fit and operation. Try the watch on where possible, and have its condition assessed by a qualified watch specialist if you cannot judge it yourself.
- Treat water resistance as a separate question. Ask about an appropriate assessment of the individual watch; a vintage model should not be assumed water-resistant from its collection name.
Is a vintage Tank or Santos the better investment?
The available evidence does not establish a reference-matched comparison of vintage prices or sales, so it cannot support a claim that either family is a better investment or justify a price range. Start with the design you want to see on your wrist every day: the Tank’s rectangular outline and parallel brancards, or the Santos’s square shape, rounded edges, and exposed screws. Then evaluate the exact vintage watch—not just its collection name—for fit, condition, originality, and service history.
