Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed the watch in 1972; Orfina’s archive says the first production watches reached customers in 1973. Later Orfina references used different movements and configurations, so identify the reference before describing a particular example.
Why the Chronograph 1’s design mattered
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed the Chronograph I in 1972, the year Porsche Newsroom identifies as the beginning of Porsche Design. Porsche Design’s collaboration history names Swiss manufacturer Orfina as its original production partner. The Orfina archive distinguishes the 1972 launch from the arrival of the first production watches to customers in 1973; these are different milestones, not conflicting dates. Porsche Newsroom’s 2022 history, Porsche Design’s collaboration history, and the Orfina Porsche Design Reference Guide document those accounts.
Porsche Design describes the original look as inspired by the Porsche 911 cockpit. Its high-contrast scheme—matte black dial, white luminous indices, and red chronograph hand—was intended to make information easy to read. The brand summed up the concept as “an information system that works, even at high speeds and in stray light.” That is Porsche Design’s statement of intent, not an independent performance test. What movement is in an Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph 1?
There is no single answer for every Orfina-era Chronograph 1. The Orfina archive links the movement to the reference: Reference 7750 uses the Valjoux 7750, while References 7176 and 7177 belong to the later Lemania 5100 generation. The numbers can be easy to misread: “7750” is both a watch reference in this archive and the name of the Valjoux movement associated with that reference. Confirm which use is meant before comparing specifications. Orfina Porsche Design Reference Guide.

These are reference-family descriptions from the Orfina archive, not a guarantee that every surviving watch has an unchanged or correctly identified configuration. The archive’s category counts are its own classifications; they do not prove that every possible finish-and-dial combination was produced or that all examples are equally documented. Orfina Porsche Design Reference Guide.
Why identify the reference before quoting specifications?
The same model name spans watches with different movements, chronograph layouts, and visible details. A description that simply says “Chronograph 1” can therefore blur distinctions that matter when comparing a listing or discussing a particular watch. Start with the reference, then check whether the movement and displayed configuration align with the archive’s account for that family. Orfina Porsche Design Reference Guide.

- References 7176/7177: the archive associates them with the Lemania 5100 display, including central chronograph minute and second hands, a 12-hour totalizer, a 24-hour display, small seconds, and day/date.
- Compare details, not just the dial: the archive records differences in finish, caseback, rehaut, and dial among variants. A surface resemblance alone cannot establish the precise configuration.
Was the Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph 1 made for the military?
The Orfina archive identifies military variants within the 7177 lineage, but the label should be tied to the documented variant rather than applied to every Chronograph 1 that looks similar. It says 7177 military variants shared the 7176 case while differing in finishes, caseback engravings, chronograph hands, rehaut, and dial. The archive’s record of six finishes and twelve dial variants describes its own classifications; it does not establish that every example with a military-style appearance has the same configuration or provenance. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the archive can—and cannot—tell a collector
The Orfina reference guide is useful for narrowing a watch to a reference family and comparing its movement and visible traits with the archive’s descriptions. It does not, on its own, authenticate an individual watch or establish its originality, condition, service history, military issue, or value. For a specific purchase, treat the reference match as a starting point rather than a verdict; those individual claims require evidence beyond the archive’s model-level descriptions.
