Many watches from this period were produced under a shared Jaquet-Droz name by a cooperative of watch-component suppliers. The result is a varied vintage category: the dial name is a useful clue, but not enough to establish a watch’s maker, movement, authenticity, serviceability or value.
What does Jaquet-Droz mean on a watch from this period?
A reproduced historical response credited to Ms Kottelat, then Jaquet Droz marketing director, describes a consortium of watch-component suppliers that created and distributed watches under the Jaquet Droz name from 1960 to 1970, for roughly ten years. The response calls these “lower prized products” and says the watches can be identified by an arrow logo. Treat that logo as a reported identifying clue, not proof of age or authenticity.
The cooperative’s story was broader than that approximate 1960–1970 span. A specialist history describes developments through the 1960s and 1970s, including a 1974 reorganization as SAH and continued Jaquet-Droz-branded production. It reports the company’s last known appearance at the Basel watch fair in 1983, while noting that the precise end of production is uncertain. Historical sources also vary in whether they hyphenate the name.
These chapters should not be conflated with the modern luxury brand. Jaquet Droz’s official history centers on Pierre Jaquet-Droz and says Montres Jaquet Droz was acquired by Swatch Group in 2000. That history does not establish uninterrupted corporate production from the cooperative era to the present.

Why these watches are not one uniform model family
The surviving references describe different kinds of watches and a notably diverse movement landscape. A specialist account reports that 190 different movements were in use in 1968, as members increasingly used standard calibres from outside suppliers. A Jaquet-Droz name on the dial therefore cannot identify the movement inside a particular example.
Compressor diver
A vintage reference describes a steel Jaquet-Droz Compressor diver designed around 1965. It has two crowns: one operates a graduated inner decompression bezel, and the watch also displays the date. That design description does not establish the present condition or water resistance of any surviving watch.

Two-register chronograph
A 2010 Fratello article describes a 1970s stainless-steel chronograph with two registers, purple minute markers and a brushed, cushion-shaped case. The author notes A. Schild movements in 1970s watches but only speculates that this particular chronograph might have a Landeron movement; the case was not opened. It is not a confirmed calibre identification.
What 1968 production figures do—and do not—tell you
A 2021 specialist account reports 7.4 million Jaquet-Droz watches exported in 1968, equivalent in that account to 17.5% of Swiss watch unit exports and 15.7% of export revenue. It also reports 1.138 million movements made that year and more than 230,000 cooperative Standard movements. These are historical figures for 1968, not evidence about current production or the movement in an individual watch.

How to assess an individual watch
Start with what can be observed, then separate it from what a seller or prior owner claims. A dial name or arrow emblem alone cannot verify a date, movement or authenticity.
- Request clear photographs. Ask for straight-on dial and caseback images, plus photographs of the movement and any reference or serial markings. If the seller cannot show the movement, regard its identity as unverified.
- Verify the calibre from the movement. Have a knowledgeable watchmaker identify the actual movement and compare it with the claimed maker and calibre. Do not promote a seller’s guess—or the unconfirmed Landeron suggestion in the chronograph article—to fact.
- Compare the exact configuration. Check case shape, dial layout, registers, crowns, bezel and date display against period references. The examples documented here illustrate variety, not a complete catalogue.
- Inspect originality and condition. Ask about case material and any replacement or refinishing work. Examine the dial for signs of refinishing and note whether components appear original; photographs may not settle these questions.
- Confirm service feasibility before buying. Ask a watchmaker experienced with vintage Swiss watches to assess running condition, service history, parts availability and the cost or practicality of repair for that specific piece.
- Do not assume a vintage diver is water-resistant. The Compressor’s original design is not evidence that a surviving watch can safely be exposed to water. Have it evaluated and pressure-tested by a qualified watchmaker if water resistance matters.
Service, records and parts: what is known
The reproduced response credited to Ms Kottelat says the modern company has no direct link to the old consortium, its archive or spare parts, and cannot guarantee customer service for those watches. This is a historical statement reproduced on a third-party page, not a verified description of current company policy. It does, however, make it especially important to establish whether an independent specialist can service the particular watch and source or make any needed parts.

The sources do not establish a current authentication procedure, current brand service policy or universal parts supply for this vintage category. A watchmaker’s assessment of the specific example is more useful than assuming that a modern brand name guarantees support.

No current comparable sales or condition-adjusted values are established here. A 2010 article’s asking-price observations are too old to use as current valuation evidence. For a real purchase or sale, compare examples with the same model and configuration where possible, and weigh confirmed movement, originality, condition, documented service and evidence for the claimed date. Distinguish completed sale prices from asking prices, and treat seller descriptions as claims unless independently verified.
