To visit the Dutch watchmaking school in Schoonhoven, plan around a scheduled open day: these are the documented occasions when general visitors can see practical classrooms, watch students at work, and speak with students and teachers. The school is Zadkine Vakschool Schoonhoven, a specialist vocational institution for jewellery and watchmaking trades. What watchmaking students learn
Zadkine offers full-time MBO vocational education in watchmaking technology (uurwerktechniek), alongside education in other jewellery and watchmaking trades and shorter courses. A course in mechanical watchmaking connects technical theory with bench practice. Its described work includes dismantling a watch, cleaning and lubricating components, reassembling the movement, and making adjustments.

The course covers the systems and components that make a mechanical watch run and function as a watch: gear trains, escapements and regulating organs, as well as cases, hands, dials and water resistance. The practical focus helps explain why watchmaking training is not simply a matter of learning to replace a battery or open a case; it involves methodical work on small, interdependent parts.
The professional course is instruction, not a drop-in visitor activity. Zadkine’s course page describes 23 lessons and lists specialized tools and a watch kit as additional expenses. Those details apply to that course; they do not establish that the school’s specific kit is available from any particular retailer. A school rooted in Schoonhoven’s silverworking history
The Vakschool began in 1895 as a drawing school for young people aspiring to become gold- and silversmiths. It later developed into a broader vocational foundation for gold- and silversmiths, jewellers, watchmakers and engravers, and is now part of ROC Zadkine. The Nederlands Zilvermuseum places the school within Schoonhoven’s continuing silverworking tradition. In 2025, the museum marked 130 years since the school’s founding.

The Nederlands Zilvermuseum is a complementary stop for visitors interested in the materials and traditions behind the trades taught at the Vakschool. Its collection spans 1600 to the present, and the museum describes a working smithy and silver workshop. Its education information says students can use the knowledge center, view exhibitions by contemporary smiths, and arrange a tour with the conservator or an exhibiting smith.

The purposes of the two stops differ: an open day at the school offers a look at vocational training and student practice; the museum offers objects, exhibitions and interpretation of silverworking.
