Vulcain Chronograph 1970’s: The Modern Reissue, Explained

The Vulcain Chronograph 1970’s is a present-day reissue, not a surviving 1970s watch. Vulcain lists a 38 mm steel case, hand-wound SW510 M BH movement and five dial colors. The available documentation supports a specifications-led overview, not a true hands-on review: comfort, legibility, chronograph operation and timekeeping have not been independently assessed here.

What is the Vulcain Chronograph 1970’s?

Vulcain presents the Chronograph 1970’s as a revival of its 1970s chronographs. The current product page calls it “identical to the original,” but that is the manufacturer’s design claim; the available period-watch record does not independently verify an exact original reference or one-to-one match. Vulcain’s Chronograph 70’s product page

That distinction matters when evaluating the word “original.” The watch currently offered by Vulcain is the reissue. A vintage Vulcain chronograph is a separate watch whose reference, configuration and history need to be established individually.

What are the reissue’s specifications?

These are specifications published by Vulcain; they have not been independently tested for this article. The product page does not state a publication year.

1963 Watch Watchdives WD1863 39mm VK63 Chronograph Watches for Men
  • VK63 MECHA-QUARTZ CHRONOGRAPH: The WD1863 uses a VK63 mecha-quartz movement with a central 1/5-second chronograph hand, 60-minute counter, running small seconds and a 24-hour display. The pushers control start, stop and reset, combining quartz accuracy with crisp mechanical-style chronograph action for practical elapsed-time measurement.
  • BUBBLE SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL & ALUMINUM BEZEL: The raised bubble-style sapphire crystal adds depth above the dial, while a high-clear inner AR coating helps reduce reflections. A 316L stainless steel case and bracelet provide a solid everyday build, and the fixed aluminum bezel creates a defined frame around the vintage chronograph display.
  • SUPER BGW-9 BLUE LUME: BGW-9 super luminous material is applied to the hands, hour markers and selected dial details. After exposure to light, these elements produce a blue glow that supports quick time reading in darker surroundings. Coverage follows the individual dial design and remains clearly arranged around the three-register chronograph display.
  • 100M WATER RESISTANCE: The screw-down crown and screw-down case back support a 100M water-resistance rating for daily wear and suitable surface-water use. Always tighten the crown fully before contact with water, do not operate the chronograph pushers while the watch is wet or submerged, and avoid hot water, steam and diving. Water resistance should be checked periodically as seals age.
  • COMPACT 39MM WRIST PROFILE: The WD1863 measures 39mm across the bezel, with a 41mm mid-case, 46mm lug-to-lug length, 12.9mm thickness including the raised crystal and 20mm lug width. These proportions balance the detail of a three-register chronograph with a wearable footprint. The 20mm bracelet remains proportionate to the case, while the raised crystal adds vintage depth to the compact design.
Specification Vulcain-listed detail
Case 316L steel; 38 mm diameter; 12.4 mm thick
Crystal Double-domed sapphire with anti-reflective treatment
Water resistance 5 ATM
Movement Hand-wound SW510 M BH
Power reserve 63 hours, as stated by Vulcain
Frequency 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz)
Hands Five: hour, minute, central seconds, and small hands at 3 and 9 o’clock
Strap dimensions 20 x 16 mm

The 5 ATM rating is the listed water-resistance specification, not evidence that a particular watch has passed a recent pressure test. For a pre-owned or vintage watch, the condition and service history matter; do not assume the modern model’s rating applies to an older example.

What movement does it use?

The modern reissue uses a hand-wound SW510 M BH, according to Vulcain. The brand lists a 63-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). Those figures describe the current model as specified by its manufacturer, rather than results from independent timing tests.

A period Vulcain chronograph may use a different calibre. For example, a circa-1970 divers chronograph in a Watches of Knightsbridge auction catalogue is listed with a manual-wind Valjoux calibre 23. That record documents one vintage watch; it does not establish the movement used in every 1970s Vulcain chronograph or the exact model behind the reissue. Watches of Knightsbridge catalogue

What sizes and dial colors are available?

Vulcain lists the current watch with a 38 mm diameter and 12.4 mm thickness. Its product page names five dial colors: blue, black, silver, salmon and green. The page specifies limited editions of 50 pieces for salmon and 100 pieces for green; it does not establish production quantities for the other colors. Availability may vary, and the page does not state a publication year.

  • Stainless steel strap/bracelet, interchangeable quick release bracelet, butterfly clasp with push-buttons closure
  • Water-resistant up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft)
  • 2 Year International Warranty

Those dimensions give a useful starting point for comparing watches, but they cannot establish how the case wears on an individual wrist. No firsthand fit or comfort assessment is available here.

How does the reissue compare with a documented period example?

A Watches of Knightsbridge catalogue for a 2017 sale describes a circa-1970 Vulcain divers chronograph with a manual-wind Valjoux calibre 23, an approximately 39 mm case, screw back with an embossed diving scene, numbered case and 60-minute rotating bezel. It is evidence of one period example, not proof that it is the original model recreated by Vulcain.

A separate listing for a Vulcain Chronograph 1376 describes a manual-wind Valjoux 7733 and dates that particular watch to the 1960s. It should not be used to identify the reissue’s source model or to claim a 1970s movement. Belmont Watches listing

The records cited here do not establish current pricing or a price comparison between the reissue and period watches.

What can—and can’t—be concluded from the available information?

The manufacturer’s page documents the modern model’s stated construction, dimensions, movement, reserve, frequency and dial options. The auction catalogue documents one separate circa-1970 divers chronograph. Neither source establishes how the reissue feels or performs in use. There is no firsthand assessment here of wrist comfort, finish, dial legibility, chronograph operation or accuracy.

For current availability or a price, consult Vulcain or a retailer and confirm the exact reference and dial variant. The cited product information does not state a current price or confirm marketplace stock.
