The Vulcain Cricket Nautical pairs a mechanical alarm with a dial-based decompression scale in a modern steel watch rated by Vulcain to 300 metres. The revival arrived in 2023; Vulcain now lists the collection as Nautical Heritage. Its appeal is the unusual combination of functions and its history—not a claim that the watch replaces dive training, procedures, or a dive computer.
What is the Vulcain Cricket Nautical?
The Cricket Nautical is a revival of Vulcain’s 1961 alarm watch, according to the brand’s history timeline. The current collection name is Nautical Heritage. The modern watch retains the original concept’s two distinctive ideas: a mechanical alarm designed to be audible underwater and a rotating dial used to work out decompression stops. Fratello covered the relaunch on September 20, 2023, so “new release” describes that revival, not a 2026 launch. Fratello’s hands-on report
How the alarm and decompression scale work
The mechanical alarm
Vulcain equips the Nautical Heritage with its hand-wound Cricket Alarm Calibre V10. The brand describes the triple case back as a resonance chamber for the alarm. On the Full Black specification page, Vulcain lists an alarm duration of 20 seconds, plus or minus five seconds. The case-back design and alarm are part of the watch’s mechanical proposition; they do not by themselves establish suitability for a particular dive or replace a diver’s established equipment and procedures. The rotating decompression display
The watch has fixed and rotating, superimposed dial elements. The wearer adjusts the upper dial using the screw-in crown at 4 o’clock. Fratello describes the intended operation as setting dive duration and depth, then reading stop times at 9, 6, and 3 metres. That describes how the watch’s scale is meant to be read; the cited product information does not establish that it substitutes for current dive-computer use, training, or procedures. Is the 42 mm Nautical too large?
At 42 mm across and 17.35 mm thick in the Full Black triple-case-back specification, this is a substantial watch on paper. Fit depends on wrist shape, strap, case-back choice, and personal preference, so the dimensions alone cannot determine whether it will wear comfortably for you. Fratello’s reviewer found the 42 mm case large for his taste and noted the design trade-off around dial legibility; that is one reviewer’s impression, not a universal fit verdict. If possible, try the exact configuration on wrist, especially if you prefer slimmer or smaller watches.
