If your Fitbit is merely asleep, turn your wrist, tap the display, or press its button. If it is completely unresponsive, connect the correct charger, leave it charging for at least an hour when the screen is totally black, then use the restart method for your exact model. “Wake,” “turn on,” “restart,” and “recharge” are different fixes.
First, identify what “turn on” means
| What you see | What it probably means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The screen wakes when you turn your wrist | The Fitbit is already running | Adjust Screen Wake or Auto Wake if the gesture is unreliable |
| A battery icon appears | The tracker is making charging contact | Leave it connected until it has enough charge |
| A Fitbit logo or smile icon appears after a button hold | The device is restarting | Release the button and wait for the clock screen |
| Nothing appears, vibrates, or responds | Empty battery, poor charger contact, or a hardware fault | Clean and reseat the charger, charge for at least an hour, then try the model-specific restart |
Many Fitbit trackers do not have a conventional power switch. A dark display can simply mean the screen timed out or Screen Wake is set to Manual. Google groups the relevant procedures under waking, charging, restarting, blank-screen recovery, and shutdown rather than one universal power-on command (model restart instructions).
Wake the display without powering the Fitbit off and on
- Turn your wrist toward your face.
- Double-tap the display on models that support tap-to-wake.
- Press the physical button, if your model has one.
If the wrist gesture does nothing, open the model’s Quick Settings or Settings and check the wake control. Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe use Screen Wake in Quick Settings: Auto wakes the display when you turn your wrist; Manual requires a firm double-tap. Inspire 3 uses Auto Wake. Sense and Versa models expose a comparable screen-wake control, although the gesture and menu location vary. Older devices may call the feature Quick View. Current menu details are listed by Google at Screen Wake and Auto Wake instructions.
Turn on a Fitbit after a deliberate shutdown
Only some watches offer a shutdown command. Shutting down does not delete stored data; sync after restarting if the displayed time is wrong.

If the screen stays black
- Remove the Fitbit from your wrist and inspect the tracker and cable.
- Use the cable made for that model; Fitbit charging cables are not universally interchangeable.
- Seat the tracker firmly so the charging pins lock into place.
- Use a wall outlet or reliable USB power source rather than assuming a computer port is adequate.
- If the screen is completely black, leave it charging for at least 60 minutes. A deeply depleted battery may need time before any icon appears.
- Try the exact restart procedure above.
Look for a battery icon, vibration, or stable charging indication. A battery icon proves contact, not that the battery already has enough charge to run normally. If the charger repeatedly connects and disconnects, clean both sides: brush the tracker contacts gently with a soft toothbrush and fresh water, dry completely, and clean charger pins carefully with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Never scrape contacts with metal. Google’s charging and blank-screen guidance is at charging troubleshooting and blank or frozen display recovery.

The logo appears, then disappears repeatedly
This is a reboot loop, not an ordinary shutdown. Avoid repeated factory resets; first try a known-good power source and the documented restart, then contact support.
The Fitbit is frozen while still showing an image
Use restart, not factory reset. A restart is the non-destructive recovery step.

The Fitbit was recently wet
Dry it thoroughly before connecting a charger. Do not charge a wet device; follow the model-specific water guidance at Fitbit water and wear guidance.
What not to do
- Do not charge with a random or incompatible cable.
- Do not insert a paper clip or other object into sensor, microphone, or altimeter holes. A pinhole procedure applies only to particular older models.
- Do not repeatedly factory-reset a device before syncing; unsynced activity, alarms, goals, notifications, and settings may be lost.
- Do not continue charging if the Fitbit becomes unusually hot, smells, swells, or shows physical battery damage. Disconnect it and contact support.
- Do not assume the Fitbit or Google Health app can switch on a fully powered-off, empty, or failed device.
When to escalate to Google/Fitbit support
- Verify the model and its exact cable.
- Try a reliable wall power source.
- Clean, dry, and reseat the contacts.
- Charge for at least one hour if the display is entirely black.
- Apply the model-specific restart once.
- Contact support if there is still no charging icon, vibration, logo, or stable connection, or if the device shows physical damage.
Factory reset is a last resort or a step support specifically directs. It can remove information that has not synchronized. Legacy devices also have model-specific update and support periods; check Google’s current status page at device support documentation.
