Alpha, baton, dauphine and feuille describe different watch-hand silhouettes—but the names are conventions, not a perfectly consistent taxonomy. The quickest way to tell them apart is to look at each hand’s outline, taper and surface, then compare its length and width with the dial markers. A shape description alongside the style name is often clearer than the name alone.

What watch-hand style names describe

A watch hand is a lightweight metal indicator that moves around the dial. Many watches have hour, minute and seconds hands; early watches could have only an hour hand. Hand shapes are a visible part of a watch’s design, but also affect how easily you can distinguish the hands and read them against the dial.

Watchmaking references do not use every style label in exactly the same way. NOMOS Glashütte puts it plainly: “The arrangement and shape of the hands very much determine the face of a watch.” Use the names as helpful descriptions, and pay attention to the actual silhouette when two labels overlap.

The Fondation Haute Horlogerie defines a hand as “A variously shaped indicator made from a thin piece of lightweight metal and which moves round a dial, with or without graduations.” Its glossary and other watchmaker references include names inspired by plants, weapons, royal styles and other familiar forms.

How to recognize alpha, baton, dauphine and feuille hands

Style What to look for Useful distinction
Alpha (or lance) A thin base widens before ending in a pronounced sharp point. Do not use “alpha” for every tapered hand; it is sometimes applied loosely to dauphine or sword shapes.
Baton (stick or obélisque) A relatively narrow, straight, elongated outline. Unlike a strongly tapered dauphine, a baton is chiefly defined by its straight, simple shape.
Dauphine A broad taper with a generally diamond-like outline; it may have a facet running down the center. Its width and faceted surface can make it look more sculpted than a plain baton.
Feuille (leaf) A softer, rounded, leaf-like outline, often broad and flat. It is not one fixed set of proportions: leaf hands can vary in how full or tapered they appear.

Alpha: a pointed, lance-like profile

Fratello also calls this shape a lance: it starts narrow, broadens, then narrows to a dramatic point. Seiko’s definitions document gives a shorter description—“a slightly tapered hand”—so the label can be broader in some usage. Fratello cautions that alpha is often mistaken for dauphine or sword hands. When precision matters, describe the visible outline rather than relying on “alpha” alone.

Baton: straight and restrained

Baton hands are elongated and relatively straight, like a narrow bar. They are also called stick hands; NOMOS uses obélisque for the original straight form. Because the shape is simple, compare its width and length with the dial markers rather than assuming every straight hand has identical proportions.

Dauphine: tapered and often faceted

Dauphine hands have a wide, tapering, diamond-like form. A central facet can catch light and give the hand a more dimensional appearance than a flat baton. Seiko emphasizes that central facet in its description, while NOMOS describes the diamond-like silhouette.

Feuille: rounded like a leaf

Feuille is French for “leaf.” NOMOS distinguishes this softer form from the more sword-like lancet, and Patek Philippe lists leaf as a recognized hand shape. Fratello describes a broad, flat, rounded hour hand that evokes a plant leaf. The name signals the general impression, not a precise template.

How feuille differs from dauphine—and from sword or lancet

Feuille and dauphine can both be wider than a baton, but their outlines suggest different things: feuille is softer and leaf-like, while dauphine is more sharply tapered and diamond-like. A facet may also make a dauphine hand look more angular. These are useful visual distinctions, not rigid rules that cover every watch.

Sword or lancet hands have a more pointed, blade-like outline. NOMOS describes the lancet as sword-shaped, emerging as if from a stem; the Fondation Haute Horlogerie also lists sword among common forms. Since a pointed alpha can resemble a sword or lancet, naming the shape alone may not settle the distinction. Look at where the hand widens, how it tapers, and whether its outline reads as a blade, spear or leaf.

Other watch-hand names you may encounter

  • Breguet or Moon: NOMOS describes a circular opening in the hand’s final third and associates the style name with Abraham-Louis Breguet. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie uses “Breguet or Moon” for a common form. Because names can be applied loosely, describe the circle and its position when that feature is what you mean.
  • Cathedral: Fratello uses this name for intricate patterns intended to make hour and minute hands distinguishable at a glance, citing the Oris Big Crown as an example. Treat this as a descriptive association, not a universal standard.
  • Spade, poire and skeleton: The Fondation Haute Horlogerie lists these among common forms. “Poire” means pear; skeleton hands have open or cut-away areas.
  • Hair, cabled and Louis XV: Patek Philippe’s glossary includes these additional hand-form names.

What makes a hand easy to read?

No hand shape is objectively the most legible in every watch. Readability depends on how the hands relate to one another, the markers and the dial—not just on the style name.

  • Length: The hands should be easy to distinguish against the dial and its markers. Their proportions affect where their tips sit relative to the indices.
  • Width and shape: A broader outline can be easier to separate visually from a narrower one, while two hands with similar silhouettes may be harder to tell apart at a glance.
  • Surface: Facets, polish, flat surfaces and openwork change how hands catch light and appear against the dial.
  • Luminous material: Wider hands can provide more room for lume. NOMOS notes this as a consideration for sportier models, but width alone does not guarantee better visibility in low light.
  • Dial harmony: A hand can complement the dial’s numerals, indices and overall character. That is a design judgment, not a measurable ranking.

Why watch hands have so many names

Hand names borrow imagery from different sources: leaves, spears and swords, royal styles, architecture, cars and natural phenomena. That variety makes the vocabulary vivid, but it also helps explain why similar shapes may be called by different names.

The Fondation Haute Horlogerie says watchmakers began stamping hands from sheet metal with a hammer and punch around 1764, then began forming them with a press around 1800. Those dates are approximate. Patek Philippe Magazine credits Daniel Quare with bringing the minute hand into regular use in the 1690s, when clocks and watches had become precise enough to need one; that is the magazine’s historical account.

Handmaking can involve detailed work as well as naming traditions. Patek Philippe Magazine reports that Fiedler SA was founded in 1848 and had supplied Patek Philippe for more than 50 years at the time of the article. The same article says some hands require 30 to 40 manufacturing steps. The publication year is not established in the accessed PDF metadata, so these are dated article claims, not current operating statistics.

How to describe watch hands accurately

  1. Start with the outline. Say whether the hand is straight, sharply tapered, diamond-like, leaf-like, blade-like or patterned.
  2. Describe the surface. Note whether it is flat, faceted, polished or skeletonized.
  3. Compare the pair. Explain how the hour and minute hands differ in length, width or shape, if that helps identify them.
  4. Add a style name when it fits. For example, call a hand “dauphine-shaped” and mention its central facet rather than using a disputed label without explanation.

A style name is not enough to identify compatible replacement hands. Compatibility depends on a particular watch and its fitting dimensions; the shape vocabulary alone cannot establish what will fit.
