Robert Redford’s character in All Is Lost (2013) wears a Seiko SKX009, according to the specialist watch publications that have examined the film. The identification is well supported but has not been confirmed by a production or prop record. One watch-identification site keeps open the possibility of a near-identical alternative, the SKX175, so the most accurate answer is “Seiko SKX009, possibly SKX175.”
How sure can we be about the reference?
Three independent published accounts support the SKX009. Fratello Watches identifies it as an SKX009 in a May 27, 2020 piece by Ben Hodges, and Hodinkee’s February 4, 2022 article by Danny Milton does the same. Watch ID’s sighting page also leans toward the SKX009 but explicitly raises the SKX175 as a nearly identical reference that it associates with a market-specific model number.
None of these accounts cites a production inventory or a statement from the film’s prop department, so the identification is a visual one made by people who examined the film closely. A Seiko Germany post on LinkedIn has also linked the film to the SKX009, but that is brand-associated corroboration rather than a technical specification.
| Reference | What the sources say | Basis of the claim |
|---|---|---|
| Seiko SKX009 | Identified by Fratello Watches (2020) and Hodinkee (2022); leaned toward by Watch ID; associated with the film in a Seiko Germany LinkedIn post | Visual identification from film viewing; not a production record |
| Seiko SKX175 | Named by Watch ID as a nearly identical alternative, linked to a market-specific model number | Raised as a possibility; not identified as the on-screen watch by the other accounts |
What the watch looks like on screen
The cues that make the watch recognizable are its blue dial and its red-and-blue “Pepsi” style bezel. Hodinkee also describes a day-date display. Those features are what the published identifications rely on, and they are the features to check against your own copy of the film if you want to confirm the match.

The strap is a dark blue NATO nylon strap, according to Watch ID. Color is the one detail the accounts do not fully agree on. Fratello notes that viewers disagree about whether the strap reads as blue or burgundy under different lighting, and the blue description is the one used in the digital viewing account. Treat the strap as blue with that caveat rather than as a settled color.
Movement and specifications
Hodinkee reports that the SKX009 uses Seiko’s 7S26 automatic movement. In the same article it describes the movement as non-hacking, meaning the seconds hand does not stop when the crown is pulled out, and as not hand-windable through the crown. The day-date complication is part of the same description.

These are secondary-source details. The published accounts do not report a hands-on examination of the watch used in the film, so readers should treat the movement notes as a reference for the SKX009 model rather than as findings about the prop itself.
Where the watch appears in the film
Hodinkee describes All Is Lost as a 2013 film in which Robert Redford is alone on screen as a stranded yachtsman. The watch remains visible as he works to repair damage to his boat and to find a way to call for help. Hodinkee points to roughly 4:55 and 20:50 as moments when it can be seen clearly. Running times can differ between releases and regional editions, so use those timings as starting points and confirm them in the version you watch.

The published accounts describe the watch as a visible detail of the story but do not say the filmmakers chose it for any particular narrative purpose. Fratello’s Ben Hodges put the reason for the piece plainly: “I noticed on my first viewing that Robert Redford’s character is wearing the Pepsi-bezel Seiko SKX009.”
Strap size and fitting
Watch ID gives a 22 mm lug width for the SKX009, which is the measurement to use when looking for a compatible NATO or other strap. Because the SKX175 is described as nearly identical, a 22 mm measurement alone does not confirm which reference you own. Check the caseback and model number on your own watch, and measure the lug width with calipers before buying a strap.

What remains open
- The reference is most strongly tied to the SKX009, but the SKX175 has not been fully excluded.
- The strap’s color is perceived differently by different viewers, so the on-screen color may not be reproduced exactly by any one product.
- No production or prop-department record has been published that confirms the exact reference used on set.
For readers who want to compare the watch with the film, the SKX009’s blue dial, red-and-blue bezel, day-date display, and 22 mm lug width are the details the published accounts agree on most consistently.
