Watches & Pencils #29: The Seiko Turtle and the Modern SRPE93

The Seiko Turtle’s rounded case and protected 4 o’clock crown trace back to a 1970 diver. The modern SRPE93 keeps the design lineage, with a 4R36 movement and current Prospex specifications.

The Seiko Turtle is a Prospex diver known for its rounded, cushion-shaped case and the crown tucked at 4 o’clock. The current SRPE93 carries that design lineage, but it is not simply the original 1970 watch unchanged: Seiko lists it with a modern 4R36 automatic movement, Hardlex crystal and a silicone strap.

Why is it called the Seiko Turtle?

“Turtle” is a fan nickname for the watch’s broad, rounded case, whose cushion-like outline suggests a shell. Seiko’s UK boutique uses the silhouette to explain the name. The defining shape is not just decoration: the case flows around a crown positioned at 4 o’clock, helping protect it from knocks.

The nickname belongs to a design lineage rather than a claim that every Turtle is mechanically identical. Seiko identifies its 1970 diver as the father of the Turtle, and says a subsequent version sharing the protected 4 o’clock crown and flowing case became known by the nickname. Seiko UK’s SRPE93K1 listing and Seiko’s 2019 account of the 1970 diver describe that connection.

How did the Turtle design develop?

Seiko’s official diver-watch timeline begins in 1965 with Japan’s first diver’s watch, rated to 150 m. It records a 300 m model in 1968, followed in 1970 by a 150 m diver with a protected crown at 4 o’clock. Seiko describes the broad, flowing case as functional crown protection and identifies that 1970 design as the ancestor of the Turtle. Seiko’s diver-watch history provides the timeline.

That history explains the modern watch’s recognizable outline; it does not establish that the SRPE93 shares every specification, component or construction detail with a vintage reference. For a vintage-versus-current comparison, use the old watch’s exact reference and condition rather than assuming all models called Turtles are interchangeable.

What does the current Seiko Turtle SRPE93 offer?

Seiko’s US listing identifies the SRPE93 as a Prospex Sea model. Its specifications are:

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results. Seiko says the model follows ISO standards for scuba diving up to 200 m; its product specification block gives the rating as 200 m / 660 ft. The cited listing does not name an ISO edition or provide an independent certificate. See the official SRPE93 product page for Seiko’s specifications.

Is the SRPE93 the same watch as the vintage Turtle?

No—not in the sense of being the original 1970 watch carried forward without change. It is a current Prospex model that recalls the earlier design. Seiko’s 2019 description calls the 1970 diver the Turtle’s “father” and says the modern Prospex recreation pays tribute to the original team; that is a statement of lineage and homage, not a claim of mechanical identity.

For practical comparison, separate the shared design idea from reference-specific facts. The lineage concerns the flowing case and protected 4 o’clock crown. The SRPE93’s published details—such as its 4R36 movement, dimensions, Hardlex crystal, water-resistance rating and supplied silicone strap—describe this current model and should not be projected onto a vintage example.

What should you consider before choosing one?

Case size

The listed diameter is 45.0 mm, a concrete sizing consideration for anyone comparing it with a smaller watch. Diameter alone does not establish how it will feel on a particular wrist, and the available specifications do not support a subjective fit verdict.

Strap options

The SRPE93 comes with a silicone strap and has a stated 22 mm distance between the lugs, which is the first measurement to check when considering another strap. Width alone does not guarantee fit: confirm that the specific strap’s shape and end design work with the SRPE93 case. The published specification does not establish universal compatibility for aftermarket straps, bracelets or end links.

Regional listing details and price

Seiko’s UK boutique lists the SRPE93K1 under the Prospex “Turtle” name, with a 4R36 movement, 41-hour reserve, 45 mm diameter, 13.42 mm thickness, 22 mm lug width, 20 bar water resistance and Hardlex. The slight thickness and wording differences from the US listing reflect how regional pages present specifications; they are not, by themselves, evidence of a materially different watch.
