In Ford v. Ferrari, Matt Damon wears a Heuer Carrera 7753 SN as Carroll Shelby, while Christian Bale wears a Heuer Autavia 2446—often called the “Rindt”—as Ken Miles. Neither film watch dates to the story’s main 1966 events. The real men’s documented watches are a different matter: Ken Miles is associated with a Breitling Co-Pilot Chronograph, and period photographs show Shelby wearing a two-tone Rolex.
What watches do Shelby and Miles wear in Ford v. Ferrari?
| Actor and character | Watch identified in the film | Visible details | How it relates to the 1966 setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby | Heuer Carrera reference 7753 SN | Silver or white dial with contrasting black subdials, a reverse-panda look | The reference came to market around 1970, after the story’s main events |
| Christian Bale as Ken Miles | Heuer Autavia reference 2446, the “Rindt” configuration | Black dial, light registers and tachymeter bezel; often worn inside the wrist | The Rindt version was introduced in 1968, after the story’s main events |
Hodinkee and OnTheDash identify the film watches as Heuer chronographs, with OnTheDash reporting that TAG Heuer confirmed the Autavia identification. [Hodinkee] [OnTheDash]
Matt Damon’s Carrera
The 7753 SN’s contrasting subdials make it easy to distinguish from the black-dial Autavia. Watch ID also identifies Damon’s film watch as a Carrera 7753 SN and describes it on a black leather racing strap. [Watch ID]
Christian Bale’s Autavia
Bale’s Autavia is harder to spot because Miles often wears it on the inside of his wrist. Hodinkee notes a clearer glimpse during a scene touring Ford’s facilities; the inward-facing position is a useful clue when watching other scenes. [Hodinkee] [WatchSpotting]

Are the movie watches period-correct?
No. The film is chiefly set around Ford’s effort at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, but the two Heuer references postdate that story period. OnTheDash dates the Carrera 30 reference 7753 to 1970, while Hodinkee says it reached the market in 1970. Hodinkee dates the Autavia 2446 to 1968, and OnTheDash says the Rindt version was introduced that year. That puts the Autavia about two years and the Carrera about four years beyond the main setting; the sources do not establish exact release months. [OnTheDash] [Hodinkee]
These are small costume-history anachronisms, not evidence that the watches were worn by the real Shelby or Miles. The story’s year and each reference’s introduction date are separate facts, and the film’s prop choices should not be treated as biographies.

What watches did the real Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby wear?
Ken Miles: Breitling Co-Pilot Chronograph
Monochrome identifies the real Ken Miles as a regular wearer of a Breitling Co-Pilot Chronograph; OnTheDash specifies reference 765. Monochrome captions a 1966 photograph of Miles wearing one while seated in a Porsche 906. The film’s Autavia is a costume choice, and the cited accounts do not establish that Miles owned or wore that Heuer. [Monochrome] [OnTheDash]
Carroll Shelby: a two-tone Rolex in period photographs
Monochrome reports photographs of Shelby wearing a two-tone Rolex in 1959 and at Le Mans in 1964. The article’s author says they had seen no photographs of Shelby wearing a Heuer chronograph from 1959 to 1965. The film Carrera therefore identifies Damon’s character wardrobe, not Shelby’s established personal watch. [Monochrome]

A separate Rolex detail from Miles’s racing career
Monochrome reports that after Miles and co-driver Lloyd Ruby won the 1965 Daytona Continental 2,000 km, each received a Rolex 6541 Milgauss with a smooth bezel. This prize-watch account is distinct from the Breitling identified as Miles’s regular watch. [Monochrome]

- For Shelby on screen: look for the light dial and dark contrasting subdials of the Carrera 7753 SN.
- For Miles on screen: look for the black-dial Autavia, often turned inward on his wrist.
- For the real Ken Miles: the cited watch coverage identifies a Breitling Co-Pilot Chronograph, reference 765.
- For the real Carroll Shelby: the cited period-photo reporting documents a two-tone Rolex, not the film’s Carrera.
All model identifications here are attributed to the cited watch publications; the available accounts do not establish that the film props belonged to the men they portray.
