Four watches and one Nixie-tube sculpture made Thor Svaboe’s personal list of Watches and Wonders 2024 highlights that deserved more attention. “Got away” means they missed dedicated coverage in his view—not that they were all sold out or unavailable.

Published by Fratello on April 13, 2024, Svaboe’s feature is an individual editorial selection, not an official event shortlist or a market-wide ranking. Its five picks range from thermally colored titanium to a television-inspired tourbillon and a 170 cm-tall time display.

At a glance: five undercovered picks

Selection What it is Standout detail What Fratello reported in 2024
De Bethune DB28xs Purple Rain Wristwatch Thermally oxidized purple titanium and random guilloché Expected price of about CHF 90,000
Hublot Big Bang Integrated 38mm Wristwatch Integrated bracelet; 38 mm case and 9.4 mm thickness €49,100 for the King Gold version
Hautlence Retrovision ’47 Wristwatch Retro television styling and a flying tourbillon The Watches and Wonders example was a Pièce Unique
Urwerk SpaceTime Blade Nixie-tube sculpture Eight modules in a 170 cm glass-tube structure CHF 55,000 plus taxes
Hajime Asaoka Tsunami “As Time Goes By” Wristwatch Pinstriped inner dial and large small-seconds register Price and availability were undisclosed

These prices and availability descriptions reflect Fratello’s April 2024 reporting; they do not establish current prices, stock, or production status.

De Bethune DB28xs Purple Rain

The DB28xs Purple Rain puts its color across the 38.7 mm titanium case and pin buckle. Fratello described the saturated purple as the result of thermal oxidation, paired with a dial of random guilloché and applied dots. The feature gave an expected price of about CHF 90,000 from De Bethune at publication in April 2024; that is a historical expectation, not a current verified offer.

Hublot Big Bang Integrated 38mm

Svaboe singled out the 38 mm integrated-bracelet Big Bang, especially the titanium version, and also noted blue ceramic and King Gold variants. The case is reported as 9.4 mm thick. On the King Gold model, a black polished dial, lumed even-hour numerals, and the HUB1115 movement—with a 48-hour power reserve—give the compact design its particular mix of finish and legibility. Fratello reported €49,100 for the King Gold version in 2024; the feature does not establish today’s price.

Hautlence Retrovision ’47

The Retrovision ’47 takes its cues from an early-1950s television or transistor radio. Its hand-painted case was intended to evoke Bakelite, with a bright red leather strap and a brass and 2N gold dial. A grille-like opening reveals the flying tourbillon. Fratello identified the movement as ED20-SP00 with a three-day power reserve.

The example shown for Watches and Wonders 2024 was a Pièce Unique. Svaboe speculated that collector interest might lead to further examples, but the feature did not report a confirmed production plan.

Urwerk SpaceTime Blade

The SpaceTime Blade is the outlier in the group: it is a hand-crafted Nixie-tube sculpture, not a wristwatch. Fratello described a 20 kg glass-tube structure, 170 cm tall, with a patinated bronze base and eight Nixie modules. Its display can change up to 500 times per second, and a remote control lets the user select displays including time, a calendar, and measures connected with Earth’s rotation and revolution.

The feature reported a 2024 price of CHF 55,000 plus taxes. It did not establish current pricing or availability.

Hajime Asaoka Tsunami “As Time Goes By”

This Tsunami variant appeared at the Masters Of Horology event in Geneva during the Watches and Wonders week. Its 38 mm case has smooth sides, while the dial combines a pinstriped inner section, a large sub-seconds register, a white lacquer outer circle, and blue accents. Fratello said price and availability were undisclosed when it published its feature in April 2024; that report is not evidence that the watch can be ordered now.

Why these five stand out together

The picks are less a unified collection than a snapshot of how differently watchmaking can treat color, display, and timekeeping. Purple titanium and guilloché make the De Bethune’s surface the focus; Hublot’s integrated bracelet and slim profile bring a sports-watch silhouette; Hautlence turns a tourbillon into part of a retro object; Asaoka draws on Art Deco-influenced dial details. Urwerk shifts the idea of a watch display into a large-scale Nixie sculpture.

That contrast is also why the list needs to be read on its own terms: it records one writer’s sense of what slipped past dedicated coverage during a crowded launch week, rather than ranking the fair’s releases or declaring which pieces were easiest to buy.
