Yes: smaller watches are showing up across more brands’ recent releases, echoing an instinct Cartier has long made visible. At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) reported that one third of the novelties it reviewed measured 36–38 mm; including watches below 36 mm, the share exceeded half. That is evidence of a design trend at one major event—not proof that Cartier caused it, or that the wider market has shifted in sales or production.
What the small-watch shift actually shows
In “Small wonders,” published 23 June 2026, FHH author Christophe Roulet reviewed more than 600 Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026 presentations. FHH found that 36–38 mm cases accounted for one third of the event’s novelties. Counting models below 36 mm brought the share to more than half. Those percentages apply to the novelties at that event; they are not global market shares, sales figures or production totals.
Roulet described the direction this way: “A return to classical canons is pushing case sizes well below the 40mm mark and driving a trend for increasingly compact models.” The phrase “catching up to Cartier” is best understood as an editorial comparison: other watchmakers are making compact designs more visible, while Cartier provides a familiar reference point. The available evidence does not establish that rival brands see themselves as following Cartier.
Cartier’s example: a Santos built for a smaller footprint
Cartier’s small Santos de Cartier measures 27 mm by 34.5 mm and has a quartz movement adapted to its reduced volume. Cartier lists steel, gold-and-steel, and all-gold versions in its Santos de Cartier overview. These dimensions describe a rectangular watch, so they should not be compared as if they were a round watch’s diameter: width and height communicate its footprint more usefully.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The model illustrates one way to make a smaller case work: use a movement suited to the available space rather than assume that every compact watch must use the same movement technology. The dimensions alone do not establish how it will fit every wrist; case shape and proportions matter too.
Compact watches are not all miniatures of the same design
FHH’s 2026 examples span very different shapes and proportions. Some are round, some rectangular or cushion-shaped, and the published measurements are not all the same kind of measurement. A 23 mm Royal Oak Mini is not directly comparable to a 24.6 by 19.3 mm Baignoire simply by lining up the numbers: one figure may describe a diameter, while the other gives two dimensions of an oval case.

| Watch | Published case measurement | What the measurement tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Mini | 23 mm | FHH gives a single size figure; the cited overview does not specify additional dimensions. |
| Cartier Baignoire | 24.6 × 19.3 mm | Two dimensions describe its oval footprint, not a round-case diameter. |
| Baume & Mercier Hampton | 28 × 17.70 mm | Two dimensions describe a narrow rectangular footprint. |
| Rolex Oyster Perpetual | 28 mm | FHH lists a single size figure. |
| Chanel J12 | 28 mm | FHH lists a single size figure. |
| Piaget Sixtie | 29 mm | FHH lists a single size figure. |
| H. Moser & Cie. Streamliner Two Hands | 28 or 34 mm | FHH identifies two size options. |
These figures come from FHH’s overview of Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026 novelties. Its list makes clear that “small” can mean a tiny round case, an elongated dress-watch shape, or a compact version of a familiar sports-watch design. FHH’s overview does not provide consistent thickness, lug-to-lug, movement, strap or bracelet, or legibility data for every example, so those characteristics cannot be reliably ranked across this list.
The trend was visible at Watches and Wonders 2025, too
A year earlier, Chronos Japan’s retrospective of Watches & Wonders 2025 also highlighted smaller releases, including the 34 mm A. Lange & Söhne 1815, the IWC Ingenieur 35 and a smaller Cartier Santos. In its 21 December 2025 article on 2025 watch-industry trends, the magazine connected the interest in smaller cases to buyers’ familiarity with thin quartz watches and smartwatches, as well as a move away from larger watches. It also suggested that smaller gold cases could help contain material costs as gold prices rise.

Those are the magazine’s explanations, not reasons the named brands have publicly confirmed for their designs. Together with FHH’s 2026 event snapshot, the 2025 coverage supports a visible pattern in recent releases—not a quantified account of what consumers are buying or why.
How to judge whether a smaller watch will suit you
Case diameter is useful for round watches, but it cannot capture the whole fit. When comparing compact models, look for the following details rather than treating one millimetre figure as a verdict:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Shape and dimensions: Note whether the stated size is a round-case diameter, width and height, or another measurement. Rectangular and oval watches can wear differently from round ones with similar headline dimensions.
- Thickness and lug-to-lug: These affect how a watch sits above the wrist and how far it spans across it. The FHH overview does not state these measurements consistently for the examples above.
- Movement: A small case can use different movement types; Cartier says the small Santos uses quartz adapted to its reduced volume. Do not assume that all compact models make the same choice.
- Bracelet or strap: The way the band meets the case and how it adjusts can change both the visual balance and wearing experience. The event overview does not give a consistent comparison of these details.
- Legibility: A smaller dial offers less area for markers and hands. Check the actual dial layout and contrast instead of inferring readability from case size alone.
Small dimensions also do not, by themselves, make a watch intended for one gender or another. Fit is about the wearer, the case’s proportions and personal preference; the examples FHH lists cover a range of designs and wrists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence does—and does not—say
The strongest conclusion is about design visibility: smaller cases appeared prominently in two consecutive years of Watches & Wonders coverage, and FHH’s 2026 event review found that more than half of the novelties it counted were below 39 mm. The sources do not establish a market-wide increase in sales, production, or consumer preference, and they do not show that Cartier initiated the shift. Cartier is a useful point of comparison, not a proven cause.
