Apple released watchOS 11.2 on December 11, 2024. Despite some claims that it introduced three new features, Apple’s official notes document two user-facing additions: the Apple Watch can pause video recorded by a paired iPhone, and the Tides app gains expanded map support for tidal conditions and coastal locations in China. The rest of the update is maintenance rather than a third major feature.
That makes watchOS 11.2 a useful but modest update—especially for people who use an iPhone on a tripod or live near China’s coast.

The two confirmed watchOS 11.2 additions
1. Camera Remote can pause iPhone video
The Camera Remote app on Apple Watch can now pause video being recorded by the paired iPhone. Previously, the watch could serve as a remote shutter and camera preview; this update extends that workflow to pausing and resuming a recording.

It is particularly useful when the iPhone is positioned out of reach on a tripod. Solo filmmakers, families recording group videos, fitness instructors, cooks, and people making repeated takes can pause without walking over to the phone or creating a separate clip every time they need a break.

To use it, open Camera Remote on the Apple Watch, position the paired iPhone, and start recording. Use the recording control shown on the watch to pause, then use the on-screen control to resume if it is available in your configuration. You can end the recording from the Camera Remote interface.
This is still remote control of the iPhone camera—not an independent video camera on the Apple Watch. The iPhone must remain paired and connected, and behavior can depend on the iPhone’s software version and camera mode. Apple’s public release note confirms the pause capability but does not promise identical controls for every recording configuration or third-party camera app.
If the control does not appear, update both devices, close and reopen Camera Remote, confirm that the iPhone Camera app is open in a supported recording state, and check that the devices remain connected.

2. Tides maps expand in China
The Tides app gains map support for tidal conditions and coastal locations in China. Users in the region, or visitors planning coastal activities there, can browse supported locations and see associated tidal information and map details.

This is a regional expansion—not a new worldwide tide-data system. The broader Tides app arrived with the original watchOS 11 release, which also introduced tide information, coastal-location discovery, and Tides complications. Apple described that wider feature as covering more than 115,000 beaches and 5,000 surf spots worldwide, but those figures do not mean watchOS 11.2 added a new map expansion everywhere.
Open Tides on the watch to browse nearby coastal locations or search for a supported beach. You can also add a Tides complication to a compatible watch face for quicker access. Coverage and available information depend on location, connectivity, and regional support.
See Apple’s official update notes and its watchOS 11 overview for the distinction between the original app and the watchOS 11.2 change.
Is there a third new feature?
Not as a separately documented consumer feature. Apple’s public watchOS 11.2 notes identify two additions. Claims of a third feature may come from counting parts of the Tides change separately, presenting general stability improvements as a feature, or relabeling features that actually debuted in watchOS 11.

Apple’s developer notes mention fixes involving battery-health reporting, StoreKit, and SwiftUI. Those changes matter to developers and platform reliability, but they are not new Apple Watch functions for ordinary users.
Likewise, Vitals, Training Load, new watch faces, Smart Stack changes, the Tides app itself, and sleep-apnea notifications belong to the original watchOS 11 release—not watchOS 11.2. The most accurate description is therefore “two documented additions, plus bug fixes and platform improvements.”
Compatible Apple Watch models
watchOS 11, including the 11.2 update, supports:
- Apple Watch Series 6 and later
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- All Apple Watch Ultra models
Apple states that watchOS 11 requires an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18. Feature availability can still vary by iPhone model, software version, camera mode, location, and region. In particular, the Tides map expansion is specifically tied to coastal support in China.

How to install watchOS 11.2
At launch, Apple required the paired iPhone to run iOS 18.2 or later. The installation path was:
- Update the paired iPhone to the required iOS version.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Go to General → Software Update.
- Download and install watchOS 11.2.
Keep the Apple Watch on its charger during installation and make sure it has at least 50% battery. Keep the iPhone and watch close together and connected to Wi-Fi where possible. Backing up the paired iPhone before a major update is sensible.
If the update does not appear, verify the watch model, iPhone software, available storage, Wi-Fi connection, and battery level. If installation appears stuck, leave the watch charging for an extended period before interrupting it. Do not routinely unpair or attempt to reinstall watchOS; reserve disruptive recovery steps for persistent problems or Apple Support guidance.

Should you install watchOS 11.2?
Yes, if you have a compatible watch and already use the watchOS 11 software branch. The update is especially worthwhile if you record iPhone video remotely, use a tripod, or need the China-specific Tides map support. Maintenance, security, and platform fixes are also reasonable reasons to keep a supported device updated.

- KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 12 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.*
Expectations should remain modest. watchOS 11.2 is not a redesign, a new health platform, or a major watch-face update. For users outside China who never use Camera Remote, the visible benefits are limited. The two additions alone are unlikely to justify replacing a functioning compatible Apple Watch.
Apple’s support page lists later watchOS 11 updates and newer major versions, so watchOS 11.2 is no longer the latest Apple Watch software as of 2026. Treat it as a historical release version, not a current upgrade target.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line: watchOS 11.2 introduced two documented user-facing additions, not three: pause control for iPhone video through Camera Remote, and expanded Tides map support in China. It is a small, worthwhile maintenance update for compatible users, but not a reason by itself to buy a new Apple Watch.
