Apple released watchOS 11 on September 16, 2024. It is no longer a new update alert: it is a free software release for compatible watches, and Apple has since issued later watchOS 11 updates. The headline’s “now available” wording belongs to launch day; the features below explain what the update added and why they may still matter.

The five biggest changes are Vitals, Training Load, sleep apnea notifications, flexible Activity rings, and a more context-aware Smart Stack. At launch, watchOS 11 supported Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and all Apple Watch Ultra models, paired with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18. Feature support is narrower in some cases: sleep apnea notifications, for example, require newer hardware and depend on regional availability.

What watchOS 11 changed—and what it did not

watchOS 11 added health and fitness context, more flexible activity goals, and a Smart Stack that can surface information when it is likely to be useful. It did not turn every compatible Apple Watch into a medical device, nor did every feature arrive on every supported model.

Apple’s release announcement lists the launch features and compatibility. Its watchOS 11 update history also records later point releases, including bug fixes, security updates, and additions such as pool-swim Custom Workouts. A watch running watchOS 11 today may therefore include changes made after the September 2024 launch.

1. Vitals puts overnight measurements in context

The Vitals app gathers overnight measurements, including heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration, and blood oxygen where available. It compares readings with the wearer’s usual range and can flag a night when two or more metrics are unusually high or low. It may also show possible contextual factors, such as illness, alcohol consumption, or a change in elevation.

Its most useful role is helping you notice patterns. For example, you might see that disrupted sleep coincides with changes in heart rate and respiratory rate. Open the Vitals app on Apple Watch to review overnight metrics and any out-of-range indicators.

  • Interpret results against your own baseline, not another person’s readings.
  • Do not treat one unusual night as proof of a health problem.
  • Vitals can highlight changes from your usual pattern; it does not determine their cause or diagnose illness.

Apple describes Vitals in its watchOS 11 launch announcement.

2. Training Load shows how recent workouts compare with your routine

Training Load estimates the effect of recent exercise by comparing the most recent seven days with a 28-day baseline. For recorded workouts, the watch combines duration and intensity; a post-workout Effort rating on a 1-to-10 scale adds how hard the session felt. Supported cardio workouts can receive an automatic estimate, while some workouts, including strength training, may require you to enter or adjust effort yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result is classified as well below, below, steady, above, or well above your recent load. The Fitness app can add context about possible fitness changes or injury risk if the current level continues, but this is not a laboratory measure of recovery or a prediction that an injury will occur.

How to use Training Load

  1. Record workouts in the Workout app as usual.
  2. After a session, review its Effort rating and adjust it if the estimate does not match how hard the workout felt.
  3. Review the recent seven-day load against the 28-day baseline in the activity and fitness summaries.
  4. Use the trend alongside how you feel and your training plan when deciding whether to maintain, increase, or ease your workload.

A high load can be appropriate during a planned training block; a low load can reflect recovery, missed sessions, illness, or incomplete data. New users may have less useful context until enough workout history has accumulated. Apple explains the calculation and categories in its watchOS 11 announcement.

3. Sleep apnea notifications look for patterns, not a diagnosis

On supported models, the accelerometer tracks subtle wrist movements during sleep. Apple labels the resulting measure “Breathing Disturbances,” and users can review whether levels are elevated or not elevated over one month, six months, or one year. After onboarding, the system analyzes data across a 30-day period and may notify a user if the pattern suggests signs associated with moderate to severe sleep apnea. The feature can also provide educational information and a PDF to share with a healthcare professional.

Model, age, and regional limits

At launch, Apple listed Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 as compatible models. Notifications are intended for adults aged 18 or older who have not already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Availability depends on country or region and regulatory authorization; Apple reported availability in more than 150 countries and regions at launch, but that does not establish current availability in every location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A notification is a reason to discuss the results with a healthcare professional, not to self-diagnose or self-treat. The feature does not replace a sleep study, and not receiving a notification does not rule out sleep apnea. See Apple’s launch details for the original model and availability information.

4. Activity rings can fit rest days and changing routines

watchOS 11 lets you set different Activity goals for different days of the week and pause rings for a day, a week, a month, or longer. Pausing preserves an award streak, so illness, travel, injury, or a planned recovery period need not be treated as a failure to close rings. You can also customize the Summary tab in the iPhone Fitness app.

That flexibility changes the incentive, not just the appearance: an activity target can better reflect a person’s schedule instead of demanding the same effort every day. For instance, someone could set lower Move goals on workdays and higher ones on weekends, or pause the rings while recovering from an injury. Pairing those goals with Training Load can provide more context than treating ring closure as the sole measure of progress.

Apple describes the goal and pause controls in its watchOS 11 announcement.

5. Smart Stack surfaces widgets and Live Activities more readily

The Smart Stack can suggest or surface widgets based on factors such as time, date, location, and daily routines. watchOS 11 also adds interactive widgets, including Photos, Distance, and Shazam, and brings Live Activities to Apple Watch through the stack.

The practical benefit is quicker access to timely information or controls without opening an app first. It is not a guarantee that every app will appear: suggestions depend on installed apps and context, while widgets and Live Activities require relevant developer support. Some people may find the changing stack useful; others may prefer a more predictable set of widgets. Apple outlines these changes in its release announcement.

Other watchOS 11 additions worth knowing

  • Check In: Start a Check In from Messages or the Workout app so a friend or family member can monitor the end of a workout.
  • Translate: The Translate app arrived on Apple Watch with 20 languages at launch. Smart Stack suggestions may surface it when you travel somewhere another language is commonly used.
  • Double Tap: The gesture gained the ability to scroll through apps, extending its use beyond its earlier actions.
  • Pregnancy support: When pregnancy is logged in Health, Cycle Tracking can show gestational age and support symptom logging. Apple also prompts users to review heart-rate notification thresholds because heart rate can change during pregnancy.
  • Tides: The app shows seven rolling days of tide forecasts, including high and low tides, height and direction, sunrise and sunset, maps, and complications.
  • Offline hiking routes: Apple Maps supports selected U.S. national-park hikes and user-created walking or hiking routes that can be saved to Apple Watch for offline turn-by-turn guidance.
  • Pool-swim Custom Workouts: Users can create structured pool-swim workouts with an “Up Next” view of the current interval and what follows. Apple’s watchOS 11 update history lists this among later changes.

Apple’s launch announcement describes the original additions; the support page covers subsequent releases.

Should you install watchOS 11?

If your watch and iPhone are compatible, the update is most compelling if you want better workout context, flexible Activity goals, Smart Stack conveniences, or—on supported models and in eligible regions—sleep apnea notifications. Before installing, consider storage, battery condition, and whether you rely on a legacy app that may not work as expected after an update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To install an available update, first bring the paired iPhone up to the required iOS version. Apple’s watchOS update instructions and release history are the place to check current requirements and steps, since labels and update paths can vary by software version. In general, keep the watch near the iPhone and on its charger during installation. If the update does not appear, check compatibility, iPhone software, Wi-Fi, charge, and available storage, then restart both devices.

Do not buy a new watch solely to get watchOS 11 if you already own a compatible model. The clearest hardware-dependent case is sleep apnea notifications, which at launch required Series 9, Series 10, or Ultra 2 and remain subject to regional availability. If you have a medical concern, use watch data as information to discuss with a clinician rather than as a substitute for care.
