It is not a health-tracking ring like Oura. As of August 18, 2026, Sandbar’s store listed it for preorder at $249, with batches 1–3 sold out and batch 4 expected to ship in fall 2026. That makes Stream an early-fulfillment product, not a broadly available, independently tested device.
What Stream does
Stream is made by Sandbar, a startup founded by former Meta employees. You wear it on your index finger and use its touchpad to deliberately start an interaction. The ring is intended to capture speech, transcribe it, and send the resulting note to the Stream app. You can also use it to dictate text, continue a conversation about a note, ask questions using stored information or web results, and control music. Sandbar describes the product on its Stream product page.
Despite the smart-ring label, the public specifications do not describe heart-rate, sleep, fitness, payment, NFC, or display features. Stream is better understood as a wearable voice interface and media controller than as a general-purpose smart ring.
How the press-to-talk workflow works
- Press and hold the ring’s touchpad to activate the microphone.
- Speak your thought or request. Sandbar says you can speak quietly or whisper, though that does not establish reliable recognition in every environment.
- Release the touchpad to send the interaction.
- Look for haptic confirmation from the ring, then review or organize the note in the iOS app.
Sandbar says the microphone is not always listening and that the ring does not save audio interactions. The intended result is a transcription and stored note, rather than a library of voice recordings. That is a meaningful distinction for people who want to capture an idea without keeping an audio file, but it does not by itself establish that every stage of speech processing happens on the ring or phone.

What the AI and controls are meant to do
Notes, recall, and conversation
Stream is designed to do more than create a one-off voice memo. Sandbar describes editing and organizing notes, continuing conversations, and recalling information from prior interactions. The paid Data Plan also includes memory and voice chat. These are product capabilities described by Sandbar; they are not evidence that the system’s recall is comprehensive or that its answers are always correct.
Dictation and web answers
The company markets universal dictation for notes, reminders, to-dos, and other text. Its broader description refers to workflows across iOS and Mac, but the current store listing identifies the dedicated Stream app as iOS-only. Sandbar has not published a complete compatibility list for every app, so do not assume that dictation works in every application or that Mac use is independent of an iPhone.
Real-time web answers and voice chat are among the paid Data Plan features and require an internet connection, according to Sandbar’s store listing. The company also describes an “Inner Voice” that can sound partly like the user; it says users can update or delete it, or switch to a non-personalized voice in app settings.

Music gestures
The touch surface doubles as a media controller: a tap can play or pause music or interrupt the assistant, a double-tap can skip to the next song, and a swipe can adjust volume. Basic media control does not require the paid AI tier, though the phone and ring still need to work together for the intended use.
Price, subscription, and preorder status
These commercial details reflect Sandbar’s store listing as of August 18, 2026; prices, terms, and batch estimates can change. The current listing displayed a $249 preorder price with a crossed-out $349 price. At launch, TechCrunch reported silver at $249 and gold at $299, but the current store information does not clearly establish color-by-color pricing. Check the live listing before ordering.
| Option | What the listing says |
|---|---|
| Stream preorder | $249 displayed as of August 18, 2026; batches 1–3 sold out; batch 4 expected to ship in fall 2026. |
| Basic use without a subscription | Notes, music control, and a weekly amount of dictation are included, according to Sandbar. |
| Data Plan for preorder buyers | Three months included with a preorder; then $10 per month for preorder members if they continue. Sandbar associates the plan with unlimited dictation, voice chat, memory, real-time web answers, and early features. |
| Preorder protections | Sandbar advertises fully refundable preorders, a 30-day return policy, and a one-year warranty. Confirm the detailed terms and when the return period begins before buying. |
That makes Stream neither simply subscription-free nor unusable without a subscription: basic functions remain on the free tier, while several headline AI features are tied to the paid plan. The stated $10 monthly rate is a preorder-member term, not a guarantee of a permanent price for all customers.

Hardware, fit, and compatibility
| Detail | What Sandbar lists |
|---|---|
| Wear position and sizes | Index finger; sizes 5–13. |
| Materials | Aluminum exterior, resin interior, and glass touchpad. |
| Inputs and feedback | Capacitive touch, motion sensing, microphones, and LRA-based silent haptics. |
| Connection and charging | Bluetooth; rechargeable battery; included USB-C charger. |
| Battery claim | Described as “all-day,” with no exact runtime or test conditions stated. |
| Water exposure | Suitable for rain and handwashing; no swimming or submersion rating is stated. |
| App and initial market | Stream app listed for iOS; United States listed as the initial shipping region. |
The store does not state battery capacity, charging time, Bluetooth version, microphone count, ring weight or dimensions, IP certification, minimum iOS version, or supported iPhone models. It also does not establish how many interactions the ring can retain without a phone. Treat “all-day” as an unquantified company description, not a measured runtime guarantee.
The app is listed for iOS, and the ring connects over Bluetooth. Sandbar says a user can later interact through the app without the ring, but the ring is required for initial setup. Android support, Windows support, Apple Watch integration, and long periods of phone-independent use are not established in the public specifications.
Sandbar says some interactions can be saved without internet, notes remain available offline in some capacity, and media controls work without internet. It does not state the offline interaction limit. Voice chat and web search require internet access. Earbuds or a connected speaker are needed for spoken AI responses; they are not needed for basic capture, haptic feedback, or media control.

Privacy: what the design does and does not establish
- Activation: Sandbar says the microphone activates only while you hold the touchpad, rather than listening continuously.
- Audio retention: Sandbar says audio interactions are not saved; the intended stored item is the transcription and note.
- Security claims: The company says personal information is encrypted in transit and at rest, and that users can request access to or deletion of saved data.
- Remote processing: The public specifications do not fully explain where speech recognition, AI responses, memory retrieval, or web search run, or whether third-party providers process speech.
“Not always listening” and “encrypted” are not the same as local-only processing. Sandbar’s technology page discusses ambitions around persistent context and agents, but those product-direction statements should not be mistaken for proof that every envisioned capability is shipping now. Sandbar also says it earns revenue from product sales rather than selling personal information; that is a company policy claim, not a complete technical account of data handling.
Press-to-talk reduces the chance of accidental background capture, but anyone using a wearable microphone should consider the people nearby. Follow local recording-consent laws and obtain permission before capturing another person’s speech, especially in workplaces, healthcare settings, or classrooms. A compromised phone or account, sensitive information retained in notes, or third-party processing policies are separate privacy considerations.
Who Stream may suit—and who should wait
Potentially good fit
- iPhone users who regularly lose ideas because unlocking a phone is inconvenient.
- People who want deliberate, discreet voice capture while walking, cooking, or commuting.
- Users interested in talking through notes or recalling prior thoughts, rather than just saving a voice memo.
- People who value press-to-talk interaction and music control on a wearable.
Probably a poor fit
- Anyone shopping for sleep, heart-rate, fitness, or other health tracking.
- Android users, or buyers who need a proven Windows or Mac-independent workflow.
- People who require local-only AI, a standalone recorder, or verified enterprise, medical, or legal-grade controls.
- Buyers who need a product in hand immediately or do not want a recurring fee for the more ambitious AI features.
- Anyone expecting a mature, independently validated device with established accuracy, battery, durability, and comfort results.
Preorder risks and practical checks
Sandbar’s fall 2026 batch estimate is not a guaranteed delivery date. The earlier batches being sold out and the product still being in preorder fulfillment matter more to a buyer than the novelty of its concept. Sandbar’s advertised refund, return, and warranty policies reduce some purchase risk, but read the current terms rather than assuming how sizing exchanges, return timing, or warranty coverage work.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Fit is especially important because the ring is designed for the index finger and its touchpad needs to be reachable by your thumb. Finger size can change with temperature, activity, or swelling; gloves and physical work may also make the gesture awkward. Use the sizing kit before settling on a size, and confirm whether the kit and any size replacement are covered by the current terms.
There is no substantial independent performance record in the available coverage for transcription accuracy, response latency, battery endurance, water resistance, comfort over a full day, or reliability in noisy environments. A small microphone can plausibly struggle with wind, traffic, masks, overlapping speech, or unfamiliar names, and AI-generated notes and answers can be wrong. Wait for haptic confirmation, check important notes in the app, and do not rely on the ring alone for medication instructions, legal records, financial details, or critical deadlines. Repeat names, dates, and numbers when accuracy matters.
Before paying, also decide whether you would still want the ring if the AI plan changed, whether you can export your notes, what happens to stored data if the service closes, and whether your intended use is supported outside the United States. The public listing does not answer all of those questions.
Alternatives to consider
| Option | What is established | How it compares with Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Pebble Index 01 | Pebble advertises a $75 preorder price, no paid subscription, on-device processing, years-long battery life, and March 2026 shipping. These are first-party claims; the cited page does not establish actual fulfillment. | Lower-cost option aimed at short captures and simple reminders; less focused on Stream-style conversational interaction and media control. |
| Magic Ring | Markets gesture control, smart-home functions, and AI agents. The available product information does not establish a reliable current price or mature shipping record. | Consider it if automation is the priority, but its operating costs and delivery status are less clearly established in the available information. |
| Spark Ring | Markets phone-based transcription and a privacy-focused approach; its page advertises planned global shipping in November 2026. That is a future plan, not evidence of shipment. | Potentially relevant for buyers prioritizing phone-based transcription or international availability, but it remains an early-stage product with future shipping. |
| Phone dictation, voice memos, or a dedicated AI recorder | These avoid buying a ring; exact features, platform support, and costs depend on the app or device chosen. | Likely better if you already carry a phone, need broader platform support, or would rather avoid another wearable and its fit and battery constraints. |
For context, TechCrunch’s launch report described Stream as a ring for voice notes and music control, while WIRED’s coverage discussed its recording approach. Those reports are not a substitute for long-term independent testing. See TechCrunch’s November 2025 launch coverage and WIRED’s Stream coverage.
Is Stream worth preordering?
Stream is most compelling if you specifically want hands-free, press-to-talk thought capture and are interested in conversational notes enough to tolerate an iOS-dependent product, a future shipping estimate, and a possible $10 monthly Data Plan after the included three months. It is a less persuasive purchase if you want a health ring, need proven performance or immediate delivery, or expect all AI processing to stay local. For simple reminders, compare the cheaper Pebble Index 01 listing; for no new hardware, try your phone’s dictation or voice memo workflow first.
