watchOS 26 is now available as a free public update. Apple’s current support documentation lists watchOS 26.5 as a stable release, while separate developer documentation includes 26.6 beta material. The update works on Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later—but its headline Wrist Flick gesture is limited to Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later.
You also need an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (3rd generation or later), running iOS 26. Here is what the update adds, which features your watch can actually use, and how to install it safely.

What’s new in watchOS 26?
Apple previewed watchOS 26 on June 9, 2025, initially describing it as a fall release. It is now publicly available; Apple’s current watchOS support documentation records the 26.x release family and watchOS 26.5.
The most visible changes include Apple’s Liquid Glass interface redesign, more proactive Smart Stack suggestions, the Workout Buddy feature, a redesigned Workout app, new watch faces, improved Messages features, and automatic speaker-volume adjustment based on surrounding noise.

How Wrist Flick works
Wrist Flick is a motion gesture, not another tap or a replacement for Double Tap. Raise your wrist to view an alert, then quickly turn the wrist over and back. Apple says the watch analyzes the movement using its accelerometer, gyroscope, and a machine-learning model.
Depending on the context, Wrist Flick can:
- Dismiss a notification.
- Mute or dismiss an incoming call.
- Silence a timer or alarm.
- Return to the watch face.
It is intended for moments when your other hand is occupied—for example, while carrying something or walking. Apple’s documentation does not establish that it will recognize every movement context perfectly, so it should be treated as a convenient additional control rather than a universal replacement for touch controls, Siri, or Double Tap.

Wrist Flick requires:
- Apple Watch Series 9 or later; or

That means Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, and Apple Watch SE models can be compatible with watchOS 26 without receiving Wrist Flick. Installing the operating system does not add the gesture to hardware that Apple excludes.

Notes comes to Apple Watch
The Notes app gives the watch a lightweight way to access information and capture short items without reaching for an iPhone. Apple documents support for viewing existing notes, creating new notes, pinning notes, unlocking notes, and completing checklist items.
You can start a note with Siri, dictate text, or type with the on-screen keyboard where the keyboard is supported. Useful examples include:
- Adding an item to a shopping list.
- Checking off a pinned packing checklist.
- Reading a short address, reference number, or reminder.
- Dictating an idea while walking.
- Completing a task without taking out your iPhone.
Notes should not be treated as full iPhone Notes parity. Apple’s published material confirms the core watch actions but does not establish identical handling for every attachment, drawing, scan, table, complex format, or large note. Locked-note behavior, practical reading limits, and some creation requirements may also depend on the paired iPhone, iCloud setup, language, or region.

Should you update?
For most owners of a compatible watch, updating is worthwhile: watchOS 26 adds Notes without new hardware, refreshes the interface, changes workout and Smart Stack behavior, and delivers later 26.x fixes. It is especially useful if your watch supports one of the feature-specific additions you want.
Waiting can still be reasonable if your watch is central to a stable routine, you are concerned about possible performance or battery-life effects, or you prefer to let a major interface change settle. Apple notes that software updates can affect performance and battery life; the effect will vary by watch condition and usage.
Owners of older compatible watches should set expectations carefully. Series 6 through Series 8 and SE models may install watchOS 26 but do not gain Wrist Flick. Health, display, translation, and Apple Intelligence features also have separate requirements.
Does watchOS 26 justify buying a new Apple Watch?
Not by itself. Notes is a software feature, and several older watches can run watchOS 26. Wrist Flick is the clearer hardware dividing line: owners of Series 8 or earlier, or an SE model below the supported Wrist Flick tier, need newer hardware to use it.

A replacement makes more sense when it also solves a hardware problem—such as poor battery condition, insufficient performance, a desired health sensor, a brighter or larger display, cellular needs, or outdoor durability. Compare current models and specifications on Apple’s Apple Watch comparison page and verify live pricing on the Apple Watch buying page. Buying an Ultra solely for Notes or Wrist Flick is difficult to justify unless its battery, durability, or outdoor features matter to you.
