Apple released watchOS 26 on September 15, 2025, after previewing it on June 9. It brought Liquid Glass styling, Sleep Score, a redesigned Workout app, Workout Buddy, Notes, and other changes. watchOS 26 is now a previous major release: Apple’s Watch page points to watchOS 27, while Apple Support lists watchOS 26.6 as the latest 26.x update covered there.
watchOS 26 release date: the short version
Apple announced watchOS 26 on June 9, 2025, and released it as a free update on September 15, 2025. Apple Support lists watchOS 26.6, a bug-fix and security update published July 27, 2026; Apple’s current Watch page points to watchOS 27. Check Apple’s software update screen for what is currently available to your device.
The update introduced Liquid Glass styling, Sleep Score, hypertension notifications on supported models, Workout Buddy, a redesigned Workout app, new watch faces, Smart Stack hints, Live Translation in Messages, Notes, and Wrist Flick. Feature access depends on the watch, paired iPhone, language, and region.

Liquid Glass redesign
Apple’s Liquid Glass design adds translucent, refracting elements to controls, navigation, Smart Stack, Control Center, and the Photos face. The visual refresh keeps the familiar watchOS interaction model.

Sleep Score
Sleep Score classifies a night using factors including sleep duration, bedtime consistency, and interruptions. It is a way to review sleep patterns, not a medical diagnosis.
Hypertension notifications
On supported models and in available regions, watchOS 26 can notify eligible users when the watch detects persistent signs associated with chronic high blood pressure. Apple Support says detection looks for consistent signs across a 30-day period; that is a feature threshold, not a population statistic.
These notifications are not a diagnosis and do not replace a blood-pressure measurement or medical care. Apple says the feature is intended for people aged 22 or older who have not been diagnosed with hypertension and are not pregnant. Model and regional restrictions apply.
Workout Buddy
Workout Buddy uses Apple Intelligence to provide personalized spoken encouragement and workout insights. Apple says it requires Bluetooth headphones connected to Apple Watch and a nearby iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. Language availability also applies.

New watch faces
New faces include Flow and Exactograph. Apple also lists Waypoint for Apple Watch Ultra and Hermès Faubourg Party for Hermès models. The update brings additional Always-On refinements to supported models.

Smart Stack hints
Contextual Smart Stack hints can suggest useful actions based on the moment, making the widget stack more proactive.

Messages adds Live Translation on qualifying hardware and paired iPhone configurations. Availability depends on supported devices, languages, and regions. Apple also describes suggested smart actions and improved Smart Replies in Messages.
Wrist Flick gesture
On supported models, Wrist Flick can dismiss notifications, mute calls, silence timers and alarms, or return to the watch face. Apple limits this and Live Translation to newer watch models, including Series 9 or later and Ultra 2 or later; check Apple’s feature requirements for your exact model.
Notes arrives on Apple Watch
The Notes app comes to Apple Watch. Apple describes support for viewing, pinning, unlocking, and checklists, as well as creating notes through Siri, dictation, or the keyboard.
Accessibility improvements
watchOS 26 adds Live Listen controls and real-time Live Captions. Language availability varies. Apple cautions that captions should not be relied on for high-risk or emergency decisions.

Which Apple Watches support watchOS 26?
Apple’s launch compatibility list includes Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and all Apple Watch Ultra models. The watch must be paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.
Apple Watch Series 5 and the first-generation Apple Watch SE are not included in that compatibility list. Compatibility with watchOS 26 does not mean every new feature works on that watch.
What iPhone is required?
Apple’s launch announcement specifies an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 for watchOS 26. Some features have additional requirements: Workout Buddy, for example, requires a nearby Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone as well as Bluetooth headphones.

- Check that the paired iPhone meets the required model and iOS version.
- For the particular feature, verify its model, iPhone, language, and regional requirements.
- Follow Apple’s current update instructions if the software update is not offered.
How to install watchOS 26
- Update the paired iPhone to a compatible iOS version.
- Place the Apple Watch on its charger and keep it within range of the iPhone.
- On the iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch, then General, then Software Update.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. The version offered may depend on your device and Apple’s current software availability.
Feature availability is not the same as update compatibility
A watch that can install watchOS 26 may not support every feature. Apple’s compatibility and feature information identifies narrower requirements for several capabilities:

Do you need a new Apple Watch for watchOS 26?
Not if your watch is on Apple’s compatibility list: Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and all Apple Watch Ultra models. The research does not establish that a hardware upgrade is necessary for the general watchOS 26 update.

If you want a feature with narrower hardware requirements, compare those requirements with your current watch before considering an upgrade. Also check the paired iPhone and any language or regional restrictions. A watch that supports the operating system may still lack a particular feature.
