Google announced Wear OS 4 on May 10, 2023, with a long-missing convenience: backup and restore for watch data and settings. It can make replacing a supported watch less of a fresh start, but it is not a universal feature with identical behavior on every Wear OS device. Google’s Pixel Watch documentation describes a specific backup and phone-transfer workflow; other manufacturers may handle migration differently.
What Wear OS 4 changed
Before Wear OS 4, Wear OS did not have a broadly documented, platform-level migration experience comparable to restoring a phone. Replacing a watch could mean reinstalling apps and rebuilding settings, tiles, and watch-face preferences. Google’s announcement introduced a platform backup-and-restore capability intended to make that transition easier, and said certain permissions granted on the phone during setup could carry over to the watch.
The important qualification is device support: Android’s developer documentation says cloud backup and restoration work when the particular Wear OS device supports the capability. Wear OS 4 does not, by itself, guarantee that every watch offers the same backup controls or restores the same information. What a Pixel Watch backup can restore
For its Pixel Watch workflow, Google says a backup can include apps, app data, settings, the watch face, and tiles. That is enough to preserve much of a watch’s everyday layout and personalization, but it should not be treated as a perfect clone. The exact result depends on the watch, software, apps, and manufacturer; individual apps may not restore all their internal state.

- Watch faces may take additional time to synchronize after transfer.
- A backup can be stale: Google says completion may take up to a few days, so recent changes may not yet be available in the saved copy.

Back up a Pixel Watch before changing devices
Google’s documented Pixel Watch backup requires Wi-Fi and the watch on its charger. Start well ahead of a planned move; enabling backup does not mean the latest copy is instantly ready.

- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi and place it on its charger.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app on the phone.
- Tap Google, then Backup.
- Tap Turn on. Before relying on the backup, check when the most recent backup completed.
Move a supported Pixel Watch to a new phone
Changing phones is different from restoring a backup to a new watch. On a supported Pixel Watch running Wear OS 4, Google documents a Transfer watch flow intended to move the existing watch to a new phone without losing saved data and settings.
- On the watch, open Settings → System → Transfer watch.
- On the old phone, open the Google Pixel Watch app, go to System, tap Transfer watch, then tap Start Transfer.
- On the new phone, open the Google Pixel Watch app and add or pair the watch.
- Confirm that the pairing codes match on the phone and watch, then follow the setup prompts to complete the transfer.
Google says the watch unpairs from the old phone only after the transfer succeeds. The documented route assumes access to a working watch and the old phone; it does not establish that every lost-phone or failed-pairing situation can be resolved without resetting. Pixel Watch setup also requires a Google Account and a compatible Android phone; app availability can depend on the account’s region. Google’s setup instructions list those requirements.

Restore a backup to a new Pixel Watch
Restore is part of setting up a replacement watch, rather than the same operation as transferring an existing watch to another phone. Google’s setup flow offers Restore from backup as an optional stage, so a user can choose an available backup or start fresh.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app and add the new watch.
- During setup, choose the backup you want to restore.
- Enter the old watch’s passcode if prompted and keep the new watch on its charger while it restores.
- Review apps, settings, the watch face, and tiles after setup; allow time for supported items such as watch faces to synchronize.
Google’s setup guide describes the optional restore stage, while its backup and transfer guide lists the content categories.

If pairing or transfer fails
Before using the reset fallback, check the common connection and software issues in Google’s troubleshooting guidance:
- Charge both devices and check that the watch firmware, Pixel Watch app, and phone software are up to date.
- Make sure Bluetooth and Location are enabled, and that the phone and watch have Wi-Fi or mobile-data connectivity as appropriate.
- Keep the devices close together. For Fast Pair, Google specifies approximately 0.5 meters (1.6 feet) or less.
- Restart the phone and watch, then try pairing again.
If the watch still will not connect, Google’s documented fallback is to back it up if possible, factory-reset it, pair it again, and optionally restore the backup. A reset may therefore still be necessary when pairing is corrupted or circumstances do not support the transfer path. Other changes in Wear OS 4
Backup and restore is the most tangible ownership improvement for people replacing devices, but Google announced other changes as well:
- Watch Face Format: Developed with Samsung, this standardized format is intended to support consistent, power-efficient watch faces. It is an ecosystem and developer change, not a switch that automatically converts every existing face; compatibility depends on the face and watch software.
- Accessibility: Google said Wear OS 4 would bring faster, more reliable text-to-speech and other accessibility improvements.
- Power and app behavior: Wear OS 4 uses Android 13/API level 33 behavior for developers and includes changes involving permissions, background sensors, app hibernation, and power management. These underlying changes matter to app developers and compatibility, rather than amounting to a guaranteed visual redesign for every owner.
- Apps and tiles: Google highlighted an updated Google Calendar, WhatsApp, Spotify tiles, and Peloton support.

Is Wear OS 4 a reason to upgrade?
Backup and restore is a meaningful quality-of-life improvement if your specific watch supports it and you regularly replace a watch or depend on a customized layout. It reduces migration friction, but it does not make the experience universal or guarantee that every credential, service, or app state will follow you. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model before buying or planning a migration. A Pixel Watch’s documented workflow should not be assumed to restore onto a Samsung Galaxy Watch or another brand’s watch.
Wear OS 4 was announced in 2023; that announcement is not evidence that every watch received the update or gained backup support at the same time. Treat backup as a device-specific capability, and do not replace a working watch solely on the assumption that Wear OS 4 will make a complete copy of it.
